FYI, our public library has Gay and Lesbian children’s books…ie Families, Families, Families. We no longer go the library and I have asked the Church if they can expand the Church library and I have offered my assistance but no word back. This is very sad. Having studied Biochemistry (MS) and Genetics (BS) and reading the studies related to G&L, I am aware that G&L studies indicate 100% attribution to environment. I need prayers for guidance and hopefully someone who would like to help me (so that I may not have to go alone) to address this issue with the public library. We need a Christian public library (especially for the children).

Please pray that no children will be exposed to G&L and pray for chastity. Please bring the problem up to your parish and ask your Church about expanding a Christian Library, especially geared for children.

God bless!

Well, a public library is just that-- public. And in the US, that means a plurality of beliefs. Funded with tax funds, the library is not going to cater to any one group and it will be open to all. We may find that offensive, but again we live in a plural society.

Of course, as a parent you are certainly free to check out only books and materials that you approve of.

A public library is funded by government funds. You are not likely to get a Christian public library. What you can do is start a non-profit and create a Christian or more specifically Catholic library that is open to the public. Or create a lending library at your parish. Or raise funds to buy books you approve of and donate them to your local library.

As much as I detest those things that you point out. I can not go down the road you are on. You want a library based on catholic beliefs? Start one at your parish.

Yes. Actually I’ve seen several parishes have this. To get started you really just need some people willing to donate books. As many of us move to more electronic versions or even just need to make space on the shelves, you might be pleasantly surprised how much people have at home to donate. This is especially true of children’s books as kids get older and out of the bedtime story age. You don’t even need to have a large space or someone to monitor it. Just a bookcase or two in the church and work on the honor system.

Not just offensive but potentially harmful.

Yes, this is what I am praying for : ) Open to the public while upholding Christian values. With homeschool support I could even create online book quizes, reports, study guides for homeschoolers. Basic catalog system is pretty easy, just need a computer and volunteers and staff approval. Online access would allow emailing due dates.

We have one, it is very small and not nearly what it could be and has not been very attractive to the public because of how limited it is. I would like it so big that the Christian public would prefer going to the Christian library rather than the public lib. Lord God, please! In Jesus name amen.

Ultimately questions like this come down to parental responsibility. Parents must be aware of what their children are reading and make sure they approve.

The same thing applies to television programs, movies, web sites, and other media.

Just as you wouldn’t turn your children loose on a city street lest they encounter danger, you can’t turn them loose in the world of ideas for the same reason.

I agree with you in ideal but obviously I wouldnt hold my breath to see the Church compete with gov’t institutions. Remember its traditionally been the other way around. Govt have always directly and indirectly stolen sheep away from Church institutions (school, healthcare, welfare, ‘marriage’, libraries). Also keep in mind we’re literally talking the past 200 years, specifically 100.

But heres my big question - where are the libraries from the evangelical ‘churches’? We’re talking AIRPORTS in they BACK YARDS, 30 Million dollar private Jets, 100 million dollar mega-churches with bowling alleys and movie theater, 53 million in a single book release… and most importantly:

NO RED TAPE HOLDING THEM BACK! If anything, they ‘do as thy wilt’ in their states and townships. They are the ‘pillars’. They DICTATE to local governers what goes or what doesnt - ESPECIALLY permit wise lol…

So WHERE are the Evangelical public libraries to help in fight against our ‘anti-God’ govt? They surely have NOTHING holding them back from doing the Lords work after all. Or maybe their private jets are more important than finding lost sheep. (i can imagine them shopping for the jets lol ‘so how low can this one fly?’… ‘how many ‘emergency landings’ can it handle in soft fields and sandy beach terrain? Only 2000?’.

Anyhow Im with you 100% and its definitely what we should be doing in these modern times.

I fight this is a very silly way. When I see a book that I object to, I do not harm it in any way. I just carefully hide it behind the other books on the shelf hoping that for awhile it will at least it is not visible. I expect there are still some of these books carefully hidden behind books. I don’t do this very often but it is a little game I like to play.

I do agree with you but I would be more concerned about keeping such books out of public school libraries and out of classroom curriculum.

I have heard some parents even take their children into bars…realistically drinking in a bar or cussing is less of a sin (perhaps unless leads to another grave sin) than living a homosexual lifestyle. Realistically parental controls are created because we cannot hover over everything every child is reading at the same time in a library without burdening the other children…patrolling all children together to get each a book individually. Unless you propose a 1 child to parent ratio family planning to combat this problem…I’m being facetious now, forgive me. G&L books are not something that you want to screen after your child has already chosen it.

??? So that a virtuous child might be intrigued by finding a hidden book? As a parent I’d rather it be in the place it is supposed to be in so I might know where it is!

I am not aware of any such books in public, but I agree…this looks like it may be an issue in the future if it is not already. So what may we do oh Lord? Wonder why public schools can afford so many fancy stuff? Consider the number of families who pay taxes for public school but need private or homeschooling because of their moral beliefs? I have heard of some people wanting the gov to create a voucher system for people who choose private school or home schooling. Meanwhile Obama is talking about the end of private schools…because it He argues that “Catholic” schools and “Protestant” schools divide people and they need to be all united in “Public” schools to enable “cooperation”. That begs the question of cooperation with what ideology?.. government (democratic) world view instead of Christian world view? Let us pray that we may be united as one body in Christ. In Jesus name, Amen.

Not to mention all you’re doing in creating extra work for the librarians. (Hint: They really don’t appreciate people doing this.)

Sweeping problems under the carpet has been a bit of an issue in our Church in the past from what I understand…lets not go there. Let’s be proactive about a solution : )

You can’t shelter your kid forever, especially in today’s world of instant information. You will have to let go of your kids some day and hope you have taught them well Part of that is learning to process and deal with the world. I wouldn’t tell you to go looking for some of the topics you’d like to avoid at the library; but I’d suggest the pace of a library book is much slower than the Internet to have some of the discussions you will inevitably have.

Tolerance means being exposed to others beliefs, teach your child certain ideas are not christian and should be avoided, not to viciously attack or cowardly bury them. Jesus taught by example…

Um that is not what tolerance means especially when other beliefs are unholy and could harm children. Jesus says something about that too.

Hate the sin…
You are not making any sense. Hate the sin love the sinner has nothing to do with the tolerance of exposing children to evil… are you just throwing popular realativistic words against the wall hoping one sticks?
Tolerance
Hate the sin
Next up is “who am I to judge…”
