I just heard this. My Archbishop is a Cardinal!!!

Abp. DiNardo is a great guy. This is very exciting!

What is surprising is the Archdiocese of Washington, DC, traditionally a red-hat diocese, was not on the list.

I am shocked about Bishop DiNardo. We just got him.

Stupid question but does this mean we get a new archbishop???

No, I don’t think so…it just means that your archbishop will also be a cardinal. 👍

I don’t think so, but I wouldn’t be surprised if we got another auxilary bishop since Rizzotto and Fiorenza are both retired. Of course, I kinda expected that before this anouncement.

I believe this is the first time Houston has ever had a cardinal?

Outstanding!

I don’t spend as much time in Houston as I used to although I still have an office & home there. Cpuld one of our CAF Houston Members can tell us whether he is traditional or liberal?

It’s hard to say. My traditionalist friends feel he is not open to the new mass and doesn’t do enough to stop litirgual abuses but i have heard him talk a few times at events and I get the impression that he is firmly grounded in the teaching and upholding the position of the church. I believe he voted to change some of the langauage at the USCB conference to go back to a better latin/greek translation but was over ruled by the majority. (it’s been about 2 years since he told us this so i can’t remember excalty what it was about)

He certainly is not liberal, but I guess it would depend on what you mean by traditional. He is very loyal to Rome. I love this column he wrote for the Texas Catholic Herald following the July release by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith regarding the uniqueness of the Catholic Church.

On a personal note, I have had the honor of meeting Abp. DiNardo on a couple of occasions and he is truly a very pastoral man. No matter what is going on around him, when you are speaking with him, you get his full attention for as long as you need it.

Yes, the first Galveston-Houston Cardinal. And no, you won’t lose him, he remains the ordinary of the archdiocese. (And its pretty rare for a cardinal to be moved to a new diocese after he becomes a cardinal.)

I think that both Archbishop Wuerl (Washington) and Archbishop O’Brien (Baltimore) were both skipped this round because in both cases their predecessor is still under 80 (and thus eligible to vote if a conclave were needed.)

Both will likely be high on the list for the next one.

I heard Father Pavone on EWTN radio this morning say that he thinks the reason the bishop from Galveston-Houston was named a cardinal, is the awareness of the Vatican about the shifting Catholic demographics in the US from the East to the South and Southwest.

I’m thinking about Galveston-Houston now having a cardinal. If the Pope doesn’t want to give the US more cardinals than we previously had – and more power in the next conclave – then it would seem like someplace that traditionally has had a cardinal will merely have an archbishop. Detroit perhaps?

I am so happy for Bishop DiNardo! He used to be our bishop here in Iowa, and I thought he was fantastic. I really couldn’t think of a better choise myself.:extrahappy:

As a member of Archbishop DiNardo’s flock, I couldn’t be happier for him. The previous post about his pastoral nature is very true. His column in the Archdiocesan newspaper is titled a Shepherds Message. One of his best was in the wake of the Motu Proprio *Summorum Pontificum. *I have not seen an expansion of the use of the EF, but his column certainly seemed to indicate that he is open to it to the extent that there is a desire for it.
