I mean meh to some extent at times. I find the whole socially awkward talking style to be a thing on Youtube in general and as others have mentioned I would not be surprised at all if their target audience were significantly younger than 20, in fact I’m almost certain a good chunk of their viewers are under 18. The whole panel discussions and stuff that I’ve seen from them didn’t seem cringy to me for the most part. I guess you could call some of their other stuff slightly cringy but then most comedy can be either slightly cringy or inappropriate or something. And the reality is, when we are being totally honest we can all be a bit “awkward” and weirdly emotional in what we are actually thinking and feeling. And I don’t know the habits of most college students but yeah mate the fact that you assumes most people would know the reference implies you live in a world different from average which is fine. Also so everyone knows this is a specific yotube channel whose name is New Catholic Generation, OP is NOT refering to young catholics in general or even a movement. Just a group of 7-15 people or so.

They’re a bit dorky, but endearing. I think it’s kind of nice that they’re authentic and don’t over-edit their videos to remove every little mistake like most channels do. I bet if the average channel didn’t over edit, they’d seem awkward too. There are SO FEW Catholic YouTube channels out there for young adults that NCG is the best we’ve got. I think their team is a pretty accurate representation of my local Newman centre-Some nerdy people, some less nerdy people.

I actually do think their target audience is late teens to college kids. A lot of their topics are things that a 13 year old would not be interested in watching - long, in depth reviews of things, discussions etc. And most university aged people that I know, myself included, watch YouTube instead of tv- it’s free and there’s more variety, even short shows are being made on it now.

Maybe we need more young Catholics stepping up to make YouTube channels so there’s more diversity in dorkiness out there

“Teenagers are immature compared to people older than them.”

I think this is often the root of much of the handwringing over the upcoming generation. I was pretty bad at 18, but I grew out of a lot of it.

Joining the Imperial Academy made sure I wasn’t a geeky dweeb. I traveled the Galaxy with the very best. I put down Rebel Scum and helped extend the reach of our glorious Empire!

I actually really like New Catholic Generation. I applaud their efforts to evangelize and their film/editing skills are really good.

Actually the “long format information” is exactly why teens (even young teens) like it. I shouldn’t say all teens, but teens I work with, yeah…they would watch long stuff just to feel adult. Many say they like Assention Press videos but that he’s a bit “boring”. The dorky livelniess keeps their attention.

Much of the language and the “characters” appeal to them and have earned their trust. The channel acknowledges that they are young and caters to them without talking down.

*wags finger at you

That belongs in the “appropriate attire for Mass” thread

I’m 20, I was never raised around kids my own age, and you know what? I hate cringe-worthy social skills too, but I can’t help it.

I watch their videos from time to time. Not all of the videos are really the type of videos I enjoy watching, but I think it would be an even worse idea to show young Catholics as untrue to themselves. If God makes us weird and geeky… we should embrace it.
Their videos may not be for everyone, but I’m sure God is reaching certain people through them. Everyone is called to evangelize, even the socially awkward. 🙂

Can you give some very specific examples of their dweebiness?

I find that a lot of people here on the forums like to describe someone they’re talking about as weird, socially awkward, etc., but don’t really give examples. It’s pretty vague if you don’t give concrete examples of the weirdness.

As a lifelong nerdy sort I am increasingly surprised that being nerdy and geeky is now the “In” thing and its “retro” and all other sorts of things.

Also keep in mind that being a devout Catholic is now very counter-cultural and is no longer mainstream in the least.

I watched some of the New Catholic Generation videos on youtube and they were kind of cool for being produced by a bunch of college kids. I would probably be considered dweeb-ish, too, though, by some people’s standards. The kids in the videos do come across as being a little sheltered and echo-chamber-y, reminiscent of people I know who were discouraged from socializing much outside of their specific family and mosque community and attended madrassa instead of public school. Some of the response videos were a little odd. The skits are funny, though.
