One of the new features is wiki.
This means I can leave a post open to editing by all forum members.
This feature is available at trust level regular and is useable by everyone at member level. TL1.

What functions would this feature be useful for?

This is a wacky post

to edit, just click the edit button as usual.

I just edited your post for typos and grammar. 😄
peace, pianistclare

@Joe_5859 is a cool poster.

So far, the only applications I can think of for the wiki feature are mischief and tomfoolery.

I think it is a scary feature.
It doesn’t seem right for others to edit one’s posts without permission.
It’s one thing for a trusted Moderator to alter a post, another for others to be able to do so.

If posts can be changed by anyone then people can be made to appear rude, insulting,
or saying the opposite of what they actually posted.
Posts can be edited to state anything, to change any thing from what one has sincerely posted with careful thought and honest opinion.

In a crowd of people there will always be a few who cannot be trusted.
They could tear through a sub-forum changing anything, and getting innocent people confused, but also getting innocent people flagged.

OK whomever edited to spell my name incorrectly, I fixed it.
UGH.
This is exactly why it’s a BAD idea.

Tried to make a response to this post and a pop up box editied it by asking if it was a sentence. The original post was
VERY, VERY, BAD IDEA!!

I saw this happen elsewhere at another forum that had this feature, and members used to do it for fun to each other, thinking that it was funny to change another person’s post around–except–it “wasn’t fun,” because other members’ posts were turned around into things that they didn’t even say.

It wasn’t good.

The forum eventually went with a different platform, and that feature was gone.

this feature can be turned on and off.

so the user can choose to have their post open to public edit.

or close it to be no edit

for example, this post has wiki off. the first post is still wiki on

I didn’t realize this was an option. How did you make your original post editable by others.

(And I apologize for the tomfoolery. 😁 I just had to test it out)

This seems limited in utility with threads only being open for two weeks after the last reply and posts being limited to 3200 characters. It might be beneficial in a thread such as that with forum tips and tricks so that people could bookmark the first post and find everything they need right there. But with posts limited by character length, it doesn’t take long for such posts to hit the max length.

This function threatens the integrity of member’s posts and the ability to trust the integrity of anyone else’s posts.

You can see who made which changes by clicking on the number icon next to the OP’s time stamp. It may have been unintentional on @christofirst’s part. When I first tried to edit from my phone, I accidentally deleted the last word (i.e. your name) just trying to get the cursor at the end of the thread on my phone. I cancelled out and tried again rather than retyping your user name though. 😜

Isn’t it off by default? I didn’t even know it was something that could be turned on. I haven’t seen it in any other thread

it is off by default. everyone raises really good points.

joe this feature is when we reach the regular member level. we can only turn our own posts wiki on or off.

a person can lose regular status if they get flagged or suspended.

so you guys can bump me back down to member if I get flagged a certain amount of times.

Rose please don’t feel sad.
If this function came with your honorable new status, you deserved the honor .
Perhaps the powers -that -be can be persuaded to turn off the wiki-function,
because of the inherent dangers of people making changes to other
leaving you with the ability still to hide trouble-making posts
Other members will also reach the same status,

You are just the poor bunny who got there first and put a light behind the potential issues

I had no idea that this was even possible. I would be concerned if my posts where being altered in a way the does not reflect my intention. This feature should not be included in this forum at all. It is morally wrong in so many ways.

THT

Yes, mea culpa. Mea maxima culpa. I was the one who tinkered with the post. I really don’t think it will be a problem for the forum, though. If I’m understanding it right, only the person who made the post can turn the wiki edit feature on or off for that particular post. No one else can just alter another’s posts if the originator of the post didn’t enable the feature. And I doubt many of us will be enabling this feature on our posts (not with pranksters like me around).

I couldn’t resist, knowing from previous posts that you have a thing about the spelling of your name. A thousand pardons.

HAHAHA I thought it might be you, you scalliwag! I don’t even know how to spell that! For everyone who doesn’t know, we were all longtime game-players in the past CAF fora. We had some great times, and a lot of witty posts.

But yeah, I can’t see any “plus” to having an OP’s post altered.
Even with my zillion typo’s…people still get my meaning.

What zillion typos!?
I don’t notice them.
You leap, posting insights succinctly and with wit!
I crawl…sometimes re-editing my verbose posts several times over.

I look for my typos, I promise not to edit anyone else’s, or to notice them!

I cheat and use Grammarly. 😜
