Back on topic and away from the insults.

The message in all three prayers is the same. We want the Jews to reach salvation. The only way to do that is through Jesus Christ. In two of the prayers this is said directly, in one it’s implied but still present. As the Successor of Peter, the Pope has the authority to oversee how the liturgy is done. It is sinful for those who do not have that charism to change the prayers, but not for him.

[Sarcasm on]
On a side note I have a compromise for the Jews. We’ll stop praying for their conversion. Obviously they find this offensive because it’s contrary to their faith. On their side, they will stop praying for the coming of the Messiah. This is offensive to our faith.
[Sarcasm off]

Finally, the old covenant. It is salvific in nature. However, this salvation is centered on the coming of the Messiah and then following him when he comes. If one is faithful to the old covenant, they will be saved because they will follow the new covenant established by the Messiah upon his coming. As Catholics we know that He has come and He is the new covenant. By not following him, they are in violation of both covenants, hence we call them to the fullness of truth.

If they don’t believe the Messiah has come, why do they care what we say?

If we could be sure that praying for our conversion would not translate into actively hating us for not converting, as it has in the past, then we wouldn’t have a problem with the prayer.

There’s no new covenant associated with the the coming of the Messiah, other than the promise that we will obey the old covenant effortlessly and with joy.

We wouldn’t pray for your conversion if we hated you all. I do know what you mean though. Some tend to hate/strongly dislike *until *the change is made, which is absolutely wrong. It’s hard sometimes to show love for the person without seeming to endorse the religion, and the other way around; over-compensation seems to happen at both ends more often than not.😦

Honestly, no offense meant. But what business is it of your faith what we pray? Even if it does generate animousity, which it shouldn’t if approached as it is meant, what right does this vocal faction of the Jewish community have to tell another religion what they can and can’t pray?

Aside: The covenant commentary was aimed at christians rather than Jews.

because, in the past it led to violence against Jews. So you can ignore our protests but we have good reason for voicing them.

Give me a break.

It wasn’t the vast cultural differences, it wasn’t that people of different faiths clash regardless of relation, it wasn’t ignorant bigotry, none of that caused anti-semetic tendencies. It was the Good Friday Prayer! That’s the source of the problems!

Some how your defense seems weak. One prayer a year breeds anti-semetism. Sorry, not buying it.

edit: Sorry if that came across as sharp, but it really bothers me. Its fine to disagree, but there is no reason to admonish the leader of a different religion over something that does not call for any sort of violence. Don’t hold us responsible for idiots.
