New trend: High-Waisted Swimwear, Immodest?

Why am I the only one that’s speaking out over this issue?
(a) You’re not, excepting maybe that you’re choosing to bring up a single detail in a larger debate and using the wrong term to describe it. High-waisted bikini bottoms use far more fabric than a string bikini, not less.
(b) Like it or not, what women wear is their choice and their debate and what you do with your eyes is your issue.

You really are capable of looking at attractive women who aren’t leaving anything to the imagination and still remembering that they are your sisters, just as men are even capable of being gynecologists and still remembering that their patients are human beings and not objects put on this earth to tempt them.

Work to obtain and maintain that self-mastery, and you’ll be OK. This is a story from the desert Fathers:

Once the disciple of a great hermit was tempted by lust. When the hermit saw him struggling, he said, ‘Shall I ask the Lord to release you from your trouble?’ But he said, ‘Abba, I see that although it is a painful struggle I am profiting from having to carry this burden. But ask God in your prayers, that he will give me enough patience to endure it.’ Then his abba said to him, ‘Now I know that you are far advanced, my son, and beyond me.’

and another:

Two brothers went to a town to sell what they had made. In the town they separated, and one of them fell into fornication. Afterwards the other brother said, ‘Let us go back to our cell, brother.’ But he replied, ‘I’m not coming.’ The other asked him, ‘Why, brother?’ He replied, ‘Because when you left me, I was tempted, and was guilty of fornication.’ The other, wanting to help him, said, ‘The same thing happened to me; after I left you, I also fell into fornication. Let us go together, and do penance with all our might, and God will pardon us sinners.’ When they returned to their cell, they told the brothers what had happened to them, and were told what penance they should do. But the one did penance not for himself, but for the other, as though he himself had sinned. God, seeing his earnestness and his charity, revealed to one of the elders, a few days later, that he had forgiven the fornicator because of the charity of the brother who had not sinned. Truly, this was to lay down his soul for his brother.

This is what those who fled the world to be monks in the desert had to say on the matter. It agrees with the Beautitude: Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. Always test your thinking on this matter against mercy and the desire that all may reach eternal life, and you will not have to worry about the great danger of being lead from mastery over lust into slavery to pride. Those are the twin traps that the evil one always tries to use, for the Devil does not care which trap we fall into, provided we can be seduced into a fall.

I would rather pray for my future wife over dwelling over this.
That is a very good idea, by the way.

It is said that it is impossible to “not think” something. You can only replace one thought with another thought that is incompatible with the thought you wish to reject. If, when you are tempted to lust or tempted to feel contempt for those who are immodest or who give in to lust, you instead pray for your future wife and for all women that you will always hold them in the greatest respect no matter what, as daughters of God whom the Lord greatly desires to outfit for eternal life, this may discourage your tempters from that tactic, since the result will be the opposite of what they intend their temptations to produce in you. In other words, if they’re looking for both lust in you and contempt for others but they get a desire to increase your respect and mercy for all others, they may not use that tactic so much.

Well that does make more sense.
But what would make even more sense is if people dealt in facts and not feelings…

This is a topic for all year round.

(Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.)

Don’t forget your swim cap.

I am female and there’s no way I feel comfortable wearing what approximates undergarments in public. I always wear swim shorts that at least come down to the top of my knees and a swim top that covers my belly like a normal tank top. Sometimes I even prefer rashgards, basically tshirts made for swimming. I think it’s humiliating that we’re expected to wear underwear in public! 😡

Agree. I wear a modest one piece, and still feel under-dressed. Two-pieces are completely out of the question… it is basically underwear.

Everything this world introduces is immodest in some way, shape or form. From the Catholic view, who’s princedom are we living in? He certainly loves immodesty. ‘Flash the flesh’ is his motto.

I think that there’s confusion over what a high-waisted swimsuit is. There are some places, like Target, that are offering modest bottoms that they call high-waisted. But, I think the OP is referring to the kind that Victoria Secret calls high-waisted which means there is a high waist band, but no material on the side to cover the sides and a great portion of the rear shows too.

What irritates me more is men don’t care one bit anymore. As a 20 year old man trying to prepare myself for heaven, I can’t this trend one bit.
Men who enjoy seeing women reduced to sex objects, perhaps. Otherwise, many young Catholic men empathize with your struggle in the silence of their hearts.

Modesty is an issue we cannot discuss here, or most other places for that matter, without receiving severe backlash. Do what every other Catholic man does and rather than complain, simply settle for nothing less than a woman who respects her body.

On the bright side, everyone will be forced to dress modesty for the next few months, so enjoy it while you can! I know I will. 😃

Have you used the search feature on CAF yet? I counted at last 17 threads on swimwear alone, in addition to many, many more general modesty threads.

So actually, your topic is not all that original, and you are not the first to speak out with your “concerns” about what other people wear.
