This morning the Holy See announced the decision of Pope Benedict XVI to name Archbishop-designate Salvatore Joseph Cordileone as the new Archbishop of San Francisco, California, USA. He replaces the retiring Archbishop George Hugh Niederauer.

Archbishop-designate Cordileone had been serving as Bishop of Oakland.

That seems a surprising move. He became bishop of Oakland only three years ago.

Of course, Oakland is only ten miles from San Francisco. Could it be that he had been moved to the Diocese of Oakland for the purpose of preparing him to take over the Archdiocese of San Francisco?

Possible, but not likely. I think in both cases, he was deemed the best candidate at the time.

He will be in my prayers, poor guy. Might as well be the Archbishop of Sodom and Gomorrah.

Wonder how he will address the Nancy Pelosi shenanigans??? We will all be praying for the new Archibishop of San Francisco. I feel sure there are many faithful Catholics in San Fran, despite the notariety of the homosexual and lesbian communities that get all the press. We forget that sometimes.

As a resident of the SF archdiocese I have been praying for a good and holy man when the new appointment was made. I first heard Bishop Cordileone on CAL when they would do an “Ask a Canon Lawyer” hour when he was Aux. Bishop of San Diego. He impressed me no end and I was overjoyed when he was named Bishop of our neighboring Oakland Diocese.

This morning I broke into tears and thanked God when I heard the news about the new appointment.

We really need to pray for him. He knows close hand what he is getting into.

You’re a tougher person than I, Mary. If I lived in San Francisco, I would have moved away AGES ago. I live in Massachusetts, but Mass. looks like a pillar of morality compared to San Fran. I guess you still live there for the same reasons I still live here: family, friends, only home I’ve ever known, and moonbat politics be darned.

And the comments roll in:
I generally don’t bother to read comments attached to online news articles. They tend to be poorly informed and often are pure emotion.

The* SF Chronicle* piece you mentioned highlights Archbishop-elect Cordileone’s role as "chair of the national subcommittee to protect and promote traditional marriage and one of the chief supporters of California’s controversial Proposition 8. I imagine most of the comments revolve around that characterization.

A disclaimer 🙂

I live in the Archdiocese of SF. Its size is 1012 square miles. (I looked it up here and they already have him listed as Archbishop!).

I live in one of the farthest corners of the archdiocese. Thanks be to God!

One of the most heartening and unreported (in the secular media) events In SF is the annual West Coast Walk for Life. The “other side” has pretty much given up protesting and tried to ignore it.

There is a wonderful historic church - St Patrick’s - right in downtown San Fran that I attend when I am there on business. The priest is a good and holy man, congregation is mostly Filipinos and travelers. I have attended First Friday Mass and Holy Hour there as well and Sunday Mass. Great place.

My prayers are with the Archbishop - that soon all his parishes will be like that! 😃

This is a very interesting appointment. I am eager to see how it plays out. I had the privilege of meeting Bishop Cordelione a year or so ago, and one thing I can say for sure is that the guy pulls no punches. I daresay he won’t be too popular among some of the more liberal leaning flock, but then again, truth rarely is. May God richly bless him in this new chapter!

To the Greater Glory of God.

Thank you, Pope Benedict.

Oh by the way, AnotherMary, if you think the the Chron has gone apoplectic, you should see the National Catholic Reporter today. Some of the commenters are major upset.

As to the poster who said the announcement was “surprising,” Niederauer (sorry if I mangled the spelling) announced his retirement, and the best one to replace him at the moment is Cordileone, who knows the State and the region rather well, and recently, not to mention the issues. The Church doesn’t need any weak-willed panderers in the City.

Yes, normally three years would be a short time, but Cordileone has been a fast learner, confident, and unyielding. He has shown he is capable.

This is fantastic news.

Thanks for pointing that out. I rarely visit that NCR. 😃

At least there were some Catholics commenting charitably.

The rest were not surprising for that publication but sad for one that has Catholic in the name. 😦
