New US Archbishop: San Francisco

I pray that Abp.Cordileone will have the strength and courage to cleanse the Augean stable that is the archdiocese of San Francisco. The blasphemies and abuses committed by some in that place have been a shame and an embarassment to the Church and to the true faithful for years. The "Catholic-in-name-only Pelosi needs to be strongly admonished and if unrepentant, excommunicated swiftly. She does not deserve to bear the honorable title of “Catholic.” That would be a good start. As for Most Holy Redeemer parish, an exsorcism followed by re-consecration would be another good start.

I’m sorry she feels that way, especially some charged adjective like “hardline”, which may not accurately describe his coming reign. I pray for all the people of San Francisco and I pray for +Cordileone and I pray particularly for our Holy Father, Benedict XVI, as he implements the Reform of the Reform, not just liturgically, but doctrinally as well. Ad multos annos!
 
Congratulations to all who live in the Archdiocese of San Francisco! Bishop Cordelone is the best man for job wherever he goes. He spent seven years in the Marriage Tribunal at the Vatican, and if anyone can defend marriage, he can. 👍
 
Very excited!

My family’s been in the area since we moved from Ireland in the 1890’s, so our roots here are a lot deeper than the legacy of the “Summer of Love”. I am very much looking forward to meeting His Excellency. 👍

My daughter and son-in-law lived in Oakland, and then in Berkeley, when he was doing a post-doc out there. We happened to go to the Cathedral in Oakland when I was visiting and was delighted to meet Bishop Cordilione, who struck me as brilliant and very orthodox. I did find it interesting that it appeared there was a bodyguard or security person with him while he was greeting people, and while he was heading over to what I gather was his residence.
 
I heard about this. From what I understand, he is very traditional and he opposes gay “marriage”. From what I understand, the current/previous Archbishop was much more liberal than the Bishop-Elect. If that is the case then hopefully this new Archbishop will clean up things that need to be cleaned up and correct things that need to be corrected. Please note, I am not accusing the current Archbishop of any wrong doing.

I would say your understanding is not entirely accurate, then.

Archbishop Niederauer (the retiring Archbishop) campaigned against gay marriage, and was the primary force behind getting LDS (Mormon) support for Prop. 8. through his contacts as the former Bishop of Salt Lake City. As Nancy Pelosi’s Archbishop, he has publicly chastised her on multiple occasions, and has called her in to meet regarding her views on abortion. It was Washington D.C.'s Archbishop Wuerl who said that he won’t deny her communion for acting on her conscience, Archbishop Niederauer has publicly rejected this justification, writing in 2010:

“As participants in the life of the civil community, we Catholic citizens try to follow our consciences, guided, as described above, by reason and the grace of God. While we deeply respect the freedom of our fellow citizens, we nevertheless are profoundly convinced that free will cannot be cited as justification for society to allow moral choices that strike at the most fundamental rights of others. Such a choice is abortion, which constitutes the taking of innocent human life, and cannot be justified by any Catholic notion of freedom.”

Prayers offered for the good Archbishop. Not my diocese, so I am a tad jealous :o

Hoping my diocese gets a similar appointment soon (not wishing ill on my bishop, in any way. Just that he reaches mandatory retirement submission age of 75 in 3 years 4 months and 22 days, which can not come soon enough for me 🙂 )
 
Currently, most ordinaries in the US stay on for a year or so beyond the 75 year age limit.

Yes, Fabian Bruskewitz, Bishop of Lincoln, turned in his mandatory letter of resignation nearly two years ago. He will turn 77 in September.

There will be a lot of unhappy Catholics when he steps down

Lord knows he needs our prayers. He has his work cut out for him. Lord, please guide this new Archbishop of San Francisco. Give him strength and determination to do Your Holy will.
