The second wave here in the U.S. - or tail end of the first wave if you want to call it that - was about half as deadly as the first, whether due to a mutation or improved treatment methods.
That, I fear, is like shutting everyone in his house in the expectation of eliminating the common cold.NZ is not looking to flatten the curve, it is looking to eliminate the virus.
Ardern:"They were holding up names of countries, and now they are saying ‘whoops’.
“Even New Zealand, you see what is going on in New Zealand. They beat it, they beat it. It was like front page, they beat it because they wanted to show me something.”
“The problem is [a] big surge in New Zealand. It’s terrible. We don’t want that.”
Ms Ardern was asked about the comments in Parliament today, where she stated the comparison is “patently wrong”.
“Obviously I don’t think there’s any comparison between New Zealand’s current cluster and the tens of thousands of cases being seen in the United States,” she said.
"I think anyone who is following Covid-19 globally can see New Zealand’s nine cases a day doesn’t compare to the United States’ tens of thousands of cases or what is happening in most places.
“We are still one of the best performing countries in the world when it comes to Covid and are focus is on keeping it that way.”

While the measure was a “necessary, reasonable and proportionate response” to the pandemic at that time, the requirement was not mandated by law and was contrary to the NZ Bill of Rights Act, the court states.
For nine days between March 26 and April 3, the order for people to stay at home and in their bubbles was justified but unlawful, according to the court.
A law change on April 3 then made the lockdown legal and the High Court said its ruling today has no effect on restrictions after that date, including the current restrictions in the Auckland region.
Health officials earlier said he hadn’t had any physical contact with potentially infected guests, though Air Commodore Darryn Webb yesterday said it could have been passed on by a nurse.
But today, Dr Ashley Bloomfield said the nurse link was “unlikely”, as all nurses had been tested and posted negative tests.
The maintenance worker had used the lift mere minutes after a person already confirmed to have the virus had been in.
“There’s been some further very good investigation work by Auckland Regional Public Health that has identified that the maintenance worker used a lift, the same lift as the case from the 31st of July.”
He said the timeframe between lift use of each person was “a matter of minutes”.
New Zealand needs to retain its current Covid-19 alert levels, the Prime Minister announced today after Cabinet met to review the restrictions.
A decision on whether alert levels will shift is set for Monday, August 24.
Auckland has been under Alert Level 3 and the rest of the country under Level 2 since August 12 - with the Prime Minister saying last week those levels would remain until August 26.
Nothing. It’s just that their name sounds like Laura Dern said really fast. What have you got against Ardern?
Does it even matter how the outbreak began?
Yes, it does.
Firstly, Dr Kvalsvig said if the cluster could be traced all the way back to an inbound traveller, and all active cases and contacts were managed appropriately, then that would be reassuring.
Secondly, knowing the circumstances of the outbreak would also help tighten up any gaps in the system .
However, she also points out that it’s not essential to know how an outbreak came about in order to control it.
