Not necessairly…

It wouldn’t surprise me to see Deacon Coffaro assigned to St Stan’s due to his Polish background…but it seems unlikely that St Marys Student Parish would have two priests assigned to it…same for Beal City…the cathedral would be another story I suppose.
Fr. Coffaro is going to St. Thomas Aquinas in Saginaw as associate. Fr. Booms, one year into his priesthood, is going to St. Michael, Port Austin as pastor.

So you must be in the ‘know’ on the assignments for the other 3 new priests? As well as any word on who is going to St Mary’s Bay City.

I spoke with Fr. Steve Gavit (their outgoing pastor) the other day. It hasn’t been decided yet, but should be announced before the Memorial Day weekend, if not sooner.

Fr Chris Coman is associate pastor of St Stan’s
Fr. Daniel Roa, I believe, will be the Chaplain at St Mary’s Hospital, Saginaw

With Fr. Booms going to Port Austin, does anyone know what is happening to Fr. Paul Grala SOLT?

I saw him briefly at the ordinations, but didn’t speak with him-and the Diocese hasn’t put a news release on its website about the assignments (which is unusual).

Fr Albrecht from Merrill was the name I was told earlier today…but who knows.

It has also been said publically that Sacred Heart Mount Pleasant will be getting an associate pastor from the new ordinations.

Fr. T.J. Fleming, who has been at St. Brigid in Midland less than a year announced this weekend that Bishop Carlson had asked him to move to St. Michael in Maple Grove. St. Michael in Maple Grove is the parish that previously had Fr. Randy Kelly as pastor and Fr. Kelly is now moving to St. Thomas Aquinas in Saginaw.

Fr. Fleming announced that his last day at St. Brigid would be July 1.

I heard that Fr. Gavitt would be going to St. Mary’s in Hemlock (a parish that has had no priest since 2003.) Sr. Mary Garascia had been “pastoral administrator” there for 5 years and I believe Fr. Craig Albrecht (pastor of Sacred Heart in Merrill) had been handling the sacramental needs of his own parish, of St. Mary’s in Hemlock and St. Patrick in Ryan. Does anyone know if St. Mary’s is getting its own priest or whether the priest will have to handle 3 different parishes?

And nobody mentioned–where will Fr. Denis Heames be assigned? Is he the one going to Sacred Heart in Mt. Pleasant?

Fr Jim Carlson is leaving Sacred Heart, Bad Axe and is going to St John Vianney on July 1

Fr Gavit is going to Hemlock because the size of the parish will allow him some freedom to work with Nouvel and Saginaw Valley.

Is Fr. Gavit going to become the chaplin @ Nouvel? I think Fr. Albrecht is the current chaplin at the high school.

I had also heard, sometime ago, that there were some renovations/additions planned for Nouvel, including a chapel. Was this just rumor, or are there renovations planned for the school?

Interesting.

But who is behind that blog? Any “official” news/announcements would be on the diocesan website, not some anonymous blog.
That’s the diocesan blog your reading…it is linked to from the home page

Does anyone know whatever happened to the assignement of Fr. Beers from Ave Maria University to Saginaw (I think there was talk of him developing a formation house in Bay City)? I thought I had heard last year it would be delayed a year. Is it just not going to happen now?

I don’t see any news about who will be assigned to Sacred Heart in Merrill or who will be assigned to St. Brigid in Midland.

Nor the three parishes in the Bad Axe area…

It gives me the impression that some of these moves were relatively last minute (St. Thomas Aquinas losing the Franciscans probably threw quite a wrench in the works).

I think that’s the case. On Sunday at St. Brigid in Midland, Fr. Fleming did say that the bishop had asked him just a few days prior to take the assignment at St. Michael’s in Maple Grove and that he would be moving on June 30.

I would think that some of the priests that are retiring threw a wrench into the works as well.

Even though four new priests were just ordained, Saginaw is still in pretty bad shape vocation-wise. I read somewhere that there are only about 58 active priests covering 106 parishes.

There are about 40 retired priests in the diocese…and the high retired-to-active ratio is a legacy of the decades of deemphasis of vocations.
