Do you think that’ll get in the way of the Bishop’s own directive?:

Anyway, i’ve had the same thoughts as you about their liturgy as i attend the occasional Sunday 5:30pm mass. Last time i was there they had these huge fans running on each side of the church which were quite loud and made it a bit difficult to hear. Is that still the case?

Fans? Is that what has been the source of the sound like as a mighty rushing wind? And here all along I thought it was the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. I guess I need look up more often so as to keep abreast of the latest distractions. They do seem to vie unceasingly for our attention.

Guess I should mention that after that directive came out the bishop made some exceptions to his directive based on the ability of parishes to install kneelers…in some cases the parishes would lose a lot of seating to install them

(note…please dont hijack this into a "you can kneel with kneelers thread…I know this, etc…I’m just telling you what the bishop is allowing)

Does that also include the ability of a parish to pay for pews with kneelers?
It would seem like at parishes with chairs or with kneeler-less pews, it would be a great expense to change over to all new seating complete with kneelers.

This was not my intent. Sorry if i offended - it was just an observation. I enjoy mass at the Cathedral and i agree with frommi about things seeming well there.

By the way, I went to mass there yesterday evening and the fans were off. If only you could do something about the helicopter from neighbor St. Mary’s hospital.

Pray for God’s grace that my fellow pilots, nurses and paramedics and I onboard that offending helicopter be granted God’s strength, wisdom, faith and courage to enable us to do His will.
I have had the privilege of flying many the child, mother, father, grandmother and grandfather, to which time was of the essence. Many the day and evening I did not want to have to respond to the calls to which we were dispatched.
Many the person over which I have prayed the “Divine Mercy Chaplet” as they lay dying onboard.

Heck, I’ve even been known to fly on the Sabbath!

Please offer that prayer for all of us and remember whose work we are about.

In my sorry attempt at a little humor while responding to another poster (piejesu - sorry again about the fan comment), I’ve managed to offend you. For this i’m truly sorry. Yes, the silly little comment about helicopter during mass was in jest (remember the smiley).

Golly! Two posts requiring two apologies. I’d better quit posting before I strike out (hope no baseball players took that the wrong way).

Seriously, Kevin, I’m thankful to know we have the likes of yourself as a pilot for St. Mary’s Flightcare. You, and all involved in prehospital care have been added to my prayers.

Gosh, there was no offense, was just making light of the fan situation (of course they are loud.) Was hoping to provide some comic relief as it were. Not that an outpouring of the Holy Spirit is anything to laugh at, God forbid. As a former Pentecostal, I would never make light of or disparage such an event.

If you come to Mary of the Assumption Cathedral in the heart of Saginaw next week and the front of the Cathedral is ensconced in scaffolding and the front doors are locked…don’t go away mad; don’t go away at all! The rear parking lot entrance will be open.

Also there is a nice article in the diocesan magazine faithsaginaw.com/ about the cathedral and cathedrals in general with some history of the Saginaw diocese cathedral, Mary of the Assumption. Note the most current issue is not online yet, please check back later.

Don’t forget daily mass at the St. Dominic chapel just down the block from the rectory. The last three Friday masses had the sacristan scrambling to find enough chairs. The rector said, “Let the people come, we’ll hang em from the ceiling!” I don’t know if that means hammocks or what…

The exterior (I’m guessing) is probably just getting repairs done. It’s a decent-looking church from the outside.

Sorry, a little off topic but still relating to the Diocese.

One of my co-workers made a statement the other day that I found implausible and just wanted to toss this out for confirmation or a “what?” as I replied when the statement was made.

It was said that St. Stan’s in Bay City “will not allow non-parishioners to receive the eucharist.”

When I confronted him in disbelief, it was reaffirmed.

Now, I’ve heard of statements made at funerals, weddings and at masses that may have may non-catholics in attendance to the effect that communion is for practicing Catholics and that they would certainly be welcome to come forward for a blessing, but certainly no blanket statement denying the eucharist to non-parishioners.

Ever hear of such a thing?

The interior is nowhere near as ugly as most of the parishes in the Saginaw Diocese.

That’s precisely the problem with the cathedral’s interior: it looks like it doesn’t have one. All of the original furniture, artwork, and accouterments were stripped and tossed out and then replaced with stacking chairs.

It’s like a big-open space with with stark, bare walls surrounding a bunch of these chairs.

Hopefully the new renovation undoes the last couple of renovations.

It appeared to be a very close-knit parish and it was quite obvious that we weren’t parishoners (I won’t go into detail-but it was). At any rate, we went through the Communion procession without a problem. No one denied us anything.

I think your friend is just repeating what someone told him or misinterperted a message about non-Catholics.

St. Stan’s parish is well known for being a stuck-up/snobbish group (particularly toward people who aren’t members there) but the idea that they would deny communion to a non-parishioner is just silly.
