Why don’t I believe this? When was it changed? Why weren’t the bishops told about it?
Obama and Biden are sticking with the “Big Lie” approach by which they claim that insurance companies have to pay for it, not employers. As if most catholic agencies aren’t self-insured. But they’re counting on Americans being too stupid to comprehend that technicality. The HHS mandate requires catholic affiliated groups to provide insurance that covers things directly contrary to catholic teaching. That Obama and Biden continue to get away with a lie that is obvious to anyone who can read and knows how insurance works is a sad commentary on how far the standard of journalism has dropped in this country. 😦

You cannot expect more from the mainstream liberal media.

Comparing Romney/Ryan’s approach to that of Obama, it’s clear while not perfect, between the support for legislation, the naming of prolife judges and the tone set by the White House, we can anticipate a reduction in the abortion rate. Obama OTOH is clearly on the side of making abortion an easy “solution” and preferably paid by the rest of us. To compare the two and claim that since the Republican platform and Romney/Ryan would restrict abortion to the most rare of circumstances, we might as well stick with Obama, well it’s just laughable.

The sad part is I’ve seen more than one make that very claim on CAF

The Obama/Biden administration has a fascination w/ abortion.

  1. *]Obama standing on the Illinois Senate floor arguing in favor of parital birth abortion & denying abortion survivors medical treatment. This “brave” stand of his got him noticed.
    *]HHS mandate vs religious freedom
*]Over the past few months several states voted to stop funding Planned Parenthood w/ state tax payer money. Obama immediately sent those PP branches federal $ to compensate.
*]Obama denies the renewal of the federal grant to Catholic Charities because they do not offer victims abortions.
    *]Sandra Fluke

    Just for starters.

Biden & Sebelius’s “catholic” identify was part of Obama’s long range plans to make abortion rights the significant policy it is.

Colo. bishop to Biden: No Communion
“It’s clear to me that the Code of Canon Law, Canon 915, says that a Catholic politician who publicly espouses positions that are contrary, not just to any teachings of the church, but to serious moral teachings, should not receive Holy Communion until they recant those positions publicly. … Vice President Biden] should know, and I would do everything I could do to make sure that he knows, he ought not to be receiving Communion.”
Catholic Bishop Michael Sheridan of the Colorado Springs Diocese on why Biden should refrain from taking Holy Communion, in the wake of statements about abortion he made during the vice-presidential debate against Wisconsin congressman Paul Ryan.
Archbishop Chaput said in 2008 Biden should voluntarily refrain from receiving Communion

He should also voluntarily refrain from appearances in front of live TV.
During which he invariably creates scandal. It’s so frustrating that the only Catholics the media likes to promote are those who either deliberately or ignorantly mislead the public with their views on abortion, marriage, and even social justice.

Have you noticed that the sometimes mistaken claims about the Church’s view on social justice are fine to “force” on others but our teachings on abortion should remain a personal decision? Kinda bass-ackwards if you know what I mean.

Which mistaken claims on social justice are being forced on us? I’m not sure that it would be a bad thing to simply admit that both sides pick and choose which Church teachings are optional and which are binding?

If I’m not much mistaken, there is a constant thread running from one cover of the Bible to the next, drumming into the heads of God children the reminder of our obligation to help the poor, help the poor, help the poor…That is so for a very fundamental reason I believe: poverty and want lie at the root of many, many an evil.

And no, poverty is not just about whether one has the latest flat screen TV or an old CRT one. It’s about the power to make the better choices in life, it’s about education of sufficient quality to inform those choices, it’s about environments that impact how people behave, it’s about the ability to maintain optimum health, to spend adequate time rearing one’s kids as opposed to resorting to electronic nannies…it’s about so much more than how much money is in someone’s pocket on any given day.

In any country of the world, regardless of the amount of absolute wealth at different levels of society, those at the bottom level have less choice, more pressures to succumb to the lesser things of life and less resources to avoid legal consequences. I suppose that, in some measure, explains the constant scriptural reminders to help the poor, help the poor, help the poor…

Those of us in the pro-life movement absolutely take to heart that we must help the
poor. We start with the most defenseless in today’s society, the unborn, because they
have been delegated to have no worth by most in the media and in secular society.
But we are also promoters of helping the poor in other areas as well. Our faith does
not say how we are to do that, that there are many ways. But it does tell us that we
MUST never support abortion, same-sex marriage, euthanasia, human cloning and other
INTRINSIC evils OR the promoters of such policies.
I commend you for working in the areas you mention, but they are not more important
all put together than even one of the intrinsic evils.

And I have no disagreement with your statements regarding the poor. The point is that Catholics who don’t express rather heretical views on abortion, gay marriage, and other important teachings are marginalized by the media in favor of “Nuns on the Bus” or Sister Carol who are big fans of big government solutions to various social issues. Further many Catholic politicians openly oppose the Church’s teachings on the non-negotiables and their words are lapped up by the media as if coming from the Holy Father.

Then you have someone like Joe Biden with his Solomon’s Baby approach. HE claims to be pro-life PERSONALLY, but doesn’t want to inflict “his” values on others. Then he splits the difference by claiming his Catholic faith supports measures to help the poor and thus INFLICTS his faith with respect to those teachings…but not abortion, gay marriage etc.

The hypocrisy is stunning. The media has clearly picked its side and with Biden et al claiming to be “practicing” Catholics, they feel they have sufficient support to promote various causes while ignoring even more important issues.

I fail to see how helping the poor and fighting to end abortion are mutually exclusive?

It is not a question of which teachings are optional but which are specific and which are generic. The prohibition against abortion is absolute but there is nothing that specifies what we must do to work for social justice. Those choices are prudential.

We are told only that we are to help the poor; what we are not told is how we should do it. Despite assertions that only one party is concerned with the poor the fact is that the disagreements are not about whether we should help but what we should do. I have no doubt that the people supporting Johnson’s Great Society innovations thought they would help the poor. That those policies devastated the groups they were meant to help should be sufficient evidence to show that it is not who cares most that matters but who knows best … and that is not a moral distinction.

No surprise, Ole’Joe even forgot his voting record during the debate when he said he voted against the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq from the beginning. Uh… Joe… you voted for both
