Central Europe is experiencing its warmest winter in 500 years and the Alps haven’t been this warm in over a millenneum. Ski resorts are suffering, as are the bears.
Only two weeks before the official start of winter, Europe is sweating. An unusually warm autumn – which was last week credited for Germany’s fourth quarter economic surge – is forcing ski resorts to market hiking holidays, and bears to seek out places cold enough to hibernate.
Indeed, Germany is experiencing its warmest autumn in 500 years. Germany’s average temperature from September to November this year was 12 degrees Celsius (54 degrees Fahrenheit), a full 3.2 Celsius degrees higher than the median temperature from 1961 to 1990.
And people still refuse to accept that humans are effectively screwing up this planet and that global warming is just a “myth”.

Well, maybe and maybe we are simply in a warming cycle. Personally, I don’t know.
The National Academy of Sciences report reaffirmed the existence of the Medieval Warm Period from about 900 AD to 1300 AD and the Little Ice Age from about 1500 to 1850. Both of these periods occurred long before the invention of the SUV or human industrial activity could have possibly impacted the Earth’s climate. In fact, scientists believe the Earth was warmer than today during the Medieval Warm Period, when the Vikings grew crops in Greenland. …

See page 5 of this report.

I don’t think anyone disputes that temperatures are rising – it would be irrational to do so.

However, the question is whether or not this is due to human machinations or the cycle of nature. As Gilliam has pointed out, we’ve had “Global Warming” on this planet before industrialization existed.

As I struggled last week through temperatures that were easily 20 degrees below the seasonal normal, it was difficult for me to believe in global warming. This week, it’s supposed to be closer to normal but still below. But I guess the global warming religionists would say that was due to global warming too.

Would have loved to read the report, Gilliam, but the print was too small.

I didn’t read the actual article, but in one serious magazine someone theorized that global warming may be good for the elderly and the sick. This is probably true. My grandfather hates the cold winters of NY.

Ahh, Nydas?

The earth is older than 500 years – much older.😉

And it has been much warmer and much colder than it is today. In fact, the period just before 1350 is known as the “Medieval Warm” or “Medieval Optimum” – the latter name due to the fact that the earth was much more fruitful than it had ever been in recorded history.

Now don’t tell us the “Medieval Optimum” was caused by King Arthur and his knights driving SUVs.😉

Tell that to the relatives of tens of thousands of people who died in France because of the heatwave in 2003.

Tens of thousands? Tens of thousands?

Can you give us a cite for that?

I just want to point out, in the event of global warming Europe is predicted to have colder winters, not warmer ones. Global warming is predicted to change the moderating pattern of the gulf stream and cause Europe to experience winters more in congruence with it’s northern latitudes.

Anthropogenic Global Warming is (according to the computer models) approximately one degree per century.

Let me restate that … one one-hundredth of a degree per year.

IF, the earth’s temperature increases by more than 0.01 degree per year, then the increase is due to natural causes.

Either that … or… the computer models are kerfluoey.

**UN downgrades man’s impact on the climate **

Mankind has had less effect on global warming than previously supposed, a United Nations report on climate change will claim next year.

The UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change says there can be little doubt that humans are responsible for warming the planet, but the organisation has reduced its overall estimate of this effect by 25 per cent.

In a final draft of its fourth assessment report, to be published in February, the panel reports that the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has accelerated in the past five years. It also predicts that temperatures will rise by up to 4.5 C during the next 100 years, bringing more frequent heat waves and storms. The panel, however, has lowered predictions of how much sea levels will rise in comparison with its last report in 2001.

Recent and historic concerns for environmental sustainability reflect the perceived linkages between the activities of human populations and the dynamics of the Earth’s systems and subsystems. Human effort has been calculated now to exceed the effects of natural forces in movement of materials on the Earth’s surface (Monastersky, 1995). Images of the Earth at night, as seen from space, clearly show the extent and concentrations of human habitation on the planet, and they document the conversion of unprecedented amounts of energy for human consumption. Much of the utilized energy is derived from fossil fuels, energy stored during a previous era by natural processes. Citing another study, Postel states that humans have “appropriated nearly 40 percent of the terrestrial food supply, leaving only 60 percent for the millions of other land-based plants and animals” (1994, p. 8). As we approach the 21st century, critical thinking must be directed toward these and other global environmental issues since our individual and collective choices influence future options. Are citizens aware of future prospects and are they adequately prepared for action on these issues?

Interested folks may also wish to look up the Club of Rome. It was an extremely prestigious group.

That group made some dire forecasts about shortages of resources. NONE of those forecasts came true.

We can argue about it all day but to suggest that pumping tons of crud into the atmosphere has no effect is just silly. As with most things, the answer probably lies in the middle. There are natural cycles that cause temperature changes but we are contributing in some yet to be quantified way, unless the Angels clean the excess carbon molecules out of the atmosphere at regular intervals. (A supporting scripture would be necessary on this one).

Since we cannot survive economically without fouling the atmosphere to some extent, we will continue to rationalize our way through the problem. We are expert at that.
