Just cause he liked it doesn’t mean he liked it for Church. I don’t know what that case was but also. The Popes personal likings are not the teachings of the church. They are simply his personal prefrences. The teachings of the Church call for more liturgically appropriate music at Mass.
I dunno…he used it at liturgies all the time, and here in Colorado, we sang it at a World Youth Day liturgy. Do you even have a correct English translation? I am fluent in English and Spanish, so here is a true translation, not a poetic one to fit the meter of the song:
You came to the edge
You have sought neither the wise nor the rich
You only want me to follow you.
Lord, you have looked into my eyes,
Smiling, you have said my name.
At the sand I have left my boat,
At your side I will look for other seas.
You know well what I have in my boat,
There are no gold nor swords
Only oars and my work.
You need my hands
My weariness that tires others,
Love that wants to keep loving.
You, fisher of other lakes,
The eternal longing of souls that wait,
“Good friend,” that you call me.
We use songs about the Call all the time. Now that you have an accurate translation, what specifically is non-liturgical about that?
