Non-Catholic response to our new Pope, Francis I

The cardinals are not puppets on a string for the Holy Spirit to pull.

They still have their free will.
The Holy Spirit doesnt pick the pope, it guides the cardinals. The cardinals pick

Good answer. As far as to why it takes more than one ballot, it may be that some cardinals need more guidance than others.😃

Also, you have to have someone who will accept. (yes they can refuse, in fact in the first conclave in '78 when JPI was elected, there was another cardinal who also was doing well in the balloting, and he told his cardinal brothers that if he was elected, he would refuse to accept.)

I’ve always been a political junkie though that is something I am trying to get away from because I think it is unholy, at least in the way I approached it. I remember following the political conventions as an 11 year old. They were and are fascinating to me.

I’m not saying the conclave is politics but it too has interested me in much the same ways. I was 17 and dating a Catholic girl the year that JPI and JPII became Pope. All the detail, procedure, the smoke, etc., were all very interesting to me. Likewise, when Benedict XVI was elected I followed that too.

At this point in time, I’m not a member of the Catholic Church but I am in my heart. Currently I’m in Inquiry and can’t imagine I won’t be in RCIA come August. JPII is my pope. He was an incredible humble holy man. I wouldn’t be where I am now if it wasn’t for how he handled himself and his job. He was impossible to ignore and admiring him made me want to look into his organization.

Benedict XVI is my pope. A very different man and a different leader but definitely the right man to lead the church. He was the pope when I started attending a Catholic Church and he will always have a special spot in my heart.

I don’t have a favorite in this procedure. It’s my belief that God will put the right man in the job for his reasons and his reasons alone. There are many needs in the church at this time. It is my prayer that now is the time that God chooses to have someone lead the church that can bring it out of it’s current malaise. However, I recognize that sometimes God chooses to do things his way which we can only understand at a much later date.

Perhaps my opinion won’t mean as much as someone that plans on staying a non-Catholic but it’s my two cents.

Thanks for a nice and well-balanced post. The comment on the past two Popes is appreciated. Pope Emeritus BXVI is much different that JPII in personality. It was general wisdom that when JPII passed away, his successor was to be an interim Pope. According to a Cardinal, now emeritus, who took part in the conclave in 2005, the then Cardinal Ratzinger did not want to be a Pope. When he was elected and asked whether he accepted to be Pope, his reply was, “I can’t.” He continued that he would accept it, “only if it is God’s will.” He was then led to the room and ten minutes later came out dressed as Pope. The rest was history.

I guess he would rather to be just a theologian, doing his work in the background rather than basking in the limelight as Pope. He is a true servant of God, true to what Jesus said to Peter, “… but when you are old you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.” (Jn 21:18)

I think the world will miss Pope Benedict. I don’t have high hopes for the next Pope, but that’s probably because I’m not sure I have fully got over his retirement yet.l
 
I am waiting. I am glad Catholics have a new pope but I won’t know what I think of the selection until the name is announced.

As a non-Catholic, I too had tears in my eyes when I saw the white smoke watching CNN waiting for this moment.

I’m still watching to see the new Pope!

I don’t know anything about him but I am glad they chose a South American.
 
Im very happy with the choice, i have a feeling he will do well. May he bring order back to the church and get the rats out of the ranks.
I will pray for him, and since he is Jesuit, which is the church i currently go too, they will be celebrating 🙂
