Non-Catholics on the CA Forum

I really care very little what the title of the Catechism of the RC-church is. Because it is not relevant.

I maintain what I have said: This church is led from Rome - hence: The Roman-Catholic Church.
Then one can dig deeper and say that within the RC-church, there are byzantine, arabic, etc rites. But the Roman-Catholic Church is the correct term, to avoid confusion with the Church Catholic. And this is one area where I will stand firm regardless of how much anyone howls.
I am going to flag you on this, just because I am lazy about it, too. The Church is not lead from Rome. Without even getting into the Holy Spirit issue, the Church is lead by the Pope in union with the Magisterium. The pope resides in Vatican City, a nation apart from Rome, Italy.

To say that it is Roman or based in Rome, and most of us do it, is intellectually lazy at best.

Latin Rite or Roman Rite Catholic Church is the language that should be used.

Now I am off to talk to Muslims about how the Roman Catholic Church is correct.

Dang…see what you made me do.

Most mormons come to this section of the forum to defend the lds church against attack. If the catholics would stop mocking the lds church, the mormons would generally disappear from the forum. Mormons (with very few exceptions) would have absolutely no compulsion to do missionary work here.

Lutherans come here because catholicism is their mother who for some reason, they left. It is always hard to leave the warmth of the mother’s womb. 🙂

However, catholic forums does have a non-catholic section for this very reason. So other faiths can be engaged in discussion. But it shouldn’t be a place where other faiths are mocked by catholics. That was not the original intent, I am sure.

Please answer his question. How is that attacking anyone?
He wrote:
People are presenting the Truth that God has revealed to us in His written word.
Because he (and others like him) is implying that Catholics are a bunch of benighted fools who are ignorant of Scripture, who need to be presented the “Truth” according to their interpretation of Scripture.

A history lesson, folks. The Bible is a Catholic book. It was written, collated, preserved, defended, and passed down from generation to generation by CATHOLICS. When you hold your Bible in your hands today, you can thank the CATHOLIC CHURCH for it. Even Martin Luther said as much! So for a non-Catholic to take OUR book, and come here and beat us over the head with it and presume to teach us “truth” is really the limit.

Some on this thread have commented on the lack of charity on the part of Catholics on these boards. I think this is because when non-Catholics come here not so much to debate as to attack our Church, we go into defensive mode pretty quickly.
I have debated on these boards with a number of non-Catholics who have disagreed with one Church doctrine or another, but we have been able to have a civil discussion. Then there are those who only come to attack the Church as some sort of monster that we ignorant Catholics need to be “rescued” from because we “need to hear God’s written word” (as if Catholics were totally clueless about the Bible!).
You know, I don’t go on Protestant boards calling them a bunch of heretics (not only is it uncharitable, but I have better things to do with my life than tearing down others). I imagine they would be just as offended and defensive as Catholics are on these boards when their Church is attacked (and I might add that I don’t see Protestant churches attacking each other with the same vehemence that they attack the Catholic Church). To those who come to these boards simply to attack the Catholic faith I say this:
Are your spiritual, personal and social lives so bankrupt that you need to justify yourself by wasting your time on Catholic forums telling us how bad the Catholic Church? Get a life!

Well, first I objected to the infusion of politics with religion and with the fundamentalism I saw creeping into Catholicism, so I went to the Episcopalians, but eventually I realized I had no wish to be in Communion with people who were so filled with hate for gay folks that they would cheer for laws making it illegal for them to have civil rights in Nigeria.

Hi a_cermak,

I am terrible sorry for the experience that you had at your Episcopal Church. This is not something that I have experienced in my Church to say the least. If I recall correctly, Bishop John Bryson Chane spoke out forcefully against Archbishop Peter J. Akinola, primate of the Church of Nigeria. The law that Akinola supported was AWFUL! What I have seen in my Church is ministry to those that are gay not cheering for laws that will send them to prison.

I think that you found yourself in the WRONG Episcopal Church. I wonder if your church is part of a break away group like CANA? I am sorry that you had this disheartening experience, it saddens me greatly.

God Bless!

Well Caferia Catholics pick and choose certain teachings of the Catholic Church.
OK. Then what % of current Catholics accept
the real presence? infallibility? birth control?

A sea-change has taken place?

How to ‘read’ the number of Catholics who accept, fully, Church teachings -
when numbers of current members are cited?

Is it an expression of sensus fidei, that the sacrament
of reconciliation has been walked away from - because
people no longer accept the concept of ‘mediatorship,’
vis a vis asking God to forgive sin?

And is it true - that Jesus chose the Passover ritual meal to
establish the Eucharist, as a meal of remembrance - rather
than the re-offering of his sacrifice to come?

…we have been consecrated through the offering of
the body of Jesus Christ once for all. [Hebrews 10]

Change may take one form or another.
No reformation moment needed.

Change takes place, quietly, as practice changes.
e.g. reconciliation], and as beliefs change.

The church of Jesus may yet be in her infancy.
Infallible teachings may simply slide away,
while still being ‘held’ to be true - but not averred to.

I’m sorry, I may have given a false impression. The individual Episcopalian Church I belonged to (Grace Episcopal in Oak Park, IL) was very affirming and welcoming to everyone! It’s a beautiful Church in both its building and its people. And certainly the Bishop of Chicago at the time was a good man who worked to build pathways to all peoples in Chicagoland.

No what I was referring to were the people I found on titusonenine and other Episcopal fora. I realized that the communion of saints meant that I was tied to folks like that and to dioceses like Quincy. I can even kind of accept their viewpoint that they don’t want to bless gay unions, but to accept that Nigerian legislation was just beyond any pale of decency. And it was hatred, pure and simple.

One of the things I just love about Reform Judaism is its emphasis on autonomy of the individual believer. I am accountable to no one but the Divine and my own conscience and by the same token, no one else is accountable to me.

I am not a control freak, and have always shied away from what many term my duty to admonish the sinner. Never mind that the Rabbi I found in the Christian Scriptures seldom did that and seemed to preach against the idea of doing that. I am where I am and I am comfortable where I am. My new faith has enabled me to mend a frayed relationship with my father and allowed me to find new relationships with both the Divine and my fellow human.

gurneyhalleck1,

Thanks for not saying you’ll pray for me. I find the habit of many amusing. They are saying, I disagree with you and will pray to the Divine that you’ll change your mind to agree with me because Divinity is on my side not yours. These folks seem a little self-aggrandizing to me.

Thank you a_cermak for clearing that up for me. I appreciate it!

Peace!

Do I have time to go get a soda? 🍿

This is really interesting.

I’ve been participating on this forum off and on for four years, and one thing that has always puzzled me is the number of non-Catholics on this forum. Many of course, are in the process of converting to Catholicism, or are thinking about it, or are simply curious as to what the Catholic Church teaches, and that is a good thing.
It depends on how & what & why !!
I simply left the rcc because I disagreed
on their teachings , the unlogical way of life !!
But also left the rcc because
I don’t believe in (a) religion !!

The bishop granted me without any problem
I left the rcc !!
But what really surprises me are the number of people active on this forum who have no interest in the Catholic faith or are downright hostile to it.
I don’t mind in what you believe !!
That’s their or your problem !!

The name “Lutheran” was given to those who followed Luther by none other than the Pope himself. From the Bull “Decet Romanum:”

Rome has spoken – we are Lutherans!!!😉
That’s verrrry funny, gcnuss. 😃

Causa…finita est!

“Here’s the door…We’ll pray for your benighted soul.”
Prayer as Put-Down Ploy. 🍿

Thank you for a solid laugh, at the end of the day.
I’m loving this thread.

Laurent,

A silly question, if you don’t mind me asking: If you left the Church and no longer believe, then why do you come to a forum on the Catholic faith?

Laurent,

A silly question,
Silly ?? :newidea:
No no , only stuuuupiiiid 😃 😉

Why I’m here ??
mmmm , Well , just to kick some BEEP 😃
What else ?? 😉 😊

Now serious:

Why I’m here ??

To see & take a part in discussions
why & in what people (not) believe ,
or why they dislike or like religion !!
Exchanging ideas (once in while) !!
By giving other views you get another vision/view ,
which makes a discussion more interesting !!

You know:
Some people at the deceased greenspun forum told me I would return ,
but I’m pretty sure they are now convinced
it simply will not happen !!

It seems like you only want Roman Catholics to be here, even in this section on “Non-Catholic Religions”.

If so, why have this section?

So Roman Catholics can discuss non-catholic religions?

I’m here because a Catholic friend asked me to check out a thread she was on discussing a situation she’s involved in. I noticed a “non-catholic” section and became curious, then I saw a thread asking a question of people like ME…so I registered so I could respond.

So, I guess you could say I am here because I was invited by a particular Catholic to visit, then by other Catholics to get involved, now, I am being questioned by yet others as to my motives! All in the span of three days!

You misread my OP completely. :banghead:

I have no problem with non-catholics who come here to discuss the differences between faiths. My problem is with those who have no other purpose than to come here than to tear down the Catholic faith.

I said - earlier in this thread: :compcoff:

…I would think that Catholics would welcome the opportunity
to engage the faith beliefs of others.

The title, of this particular forum, might read:

Considering converting to Catholicism?
Or: Any questions, vis a vis Catholic doctrine/dogmas?

It is not so titled. “Non-Catholic Religions” is the title assigned.

I find the following of interest: esp. posts # 3 and # 4.

I recall reading a post by one Protestant Christian (I believe a member of the Reformed Church) who proudly declared, “I’ll never swim the Tiber.” Fine and dandy, but then why are you wasting your time here? I myself will never swim the Elbe, or the Rhone, or the Thamaes, or convert to some non-Christian religion, but I have better things to do with my life than troll non-Catholic boards and tell them why they’re wrong (I probably spend too much time HERE as it is ).
So, if these people are that against the Catholic Church, then why do they come (before I became Catholic I wouldn’t have been caught dead on a Catholic forum)? Are they hoping to “rescue” us from the “Whore of Babylon?”
I guess you have never felt the need to share your faith with others.
