I am sorry if people took offense. I’m a graduate of a Catholic university myself, one that has had its ups and downs and struggles. A university that might have the V monologues a couple years running could get some new admins and turn right around, so again these things are not set in stone. But as per ye old Land of Lakes (it wasn’t the butter kind), with the vast majority of colleges in the US choosing not to take an oath of fidelity (and we can argue over whether the intentions were good or not later, its the results we’re dealing with today), and being more or less trying to appeal to the world by being more worldly, it is not surprising that so many colleges as a whole in each college, have beeen struggling in the last 50 years to maintain a Catholic identify and not simply a Catholic ‘brand’.
There are plenty of individual students, departments, faculty members and alum at Notre Dame who do take their faith seriously and observe Catholic teaching. They’ll tell you that they had a particular professor, or there was a group of ‘influential students’ or whatever in this or that year who did not seem to be faithful, but that does not mean the whole institute has become the AntiChrist.
However, regarding what a Catholic institution should be by definition, and regardless of how many within it do practice the faith as it should be (or don’t), an institution is ‘in name only’ if its institutional actions do not embody from the heart authentic Catholic doctrine as the ‘reason’ for its existence.
Despite some faithful members, smells and bells, a ‘history’, and other trappings meant to present the college as a little slice of Rome with a line of apostles carrying dogmatic texts and surrounded by crowds of saints, if the institution’s actual actions—the people who are recognized and rewarded by them, the studies, works, authors, groups on campus that are promoted and extolled by them, the press releases and the applause of the secular masses that are given to them, are based not on them teaching and practicing the Faith, but on them saying “Despite our Catholicity which condemns this action, this writing, this claim, WE celebrate, extol, and commend it”. . .then the institution is truly only claiming a NAME.
