The laws killed her? You could have fooled me, I thought it was bullets from the guns she had a legal right to bear?
But the laws like the state’s assault weapon ban didn’t protect her as many here claim they will.

So saving lives isn’t the goal, its saving the “right” lives?
We are discussing guns here. Do you want us to also discuss about preventing disease from killing people? Of course, we can also discuss that.

So it has nothing to do with saving lives - its all about control.

Gotcha.

Yes, absolutely. I went to a public school, not exactly super weird or anything, and we had something like four or five city cops full-time every day with guns, tasers, and a mini-jail thing with a few cells. Never witnessed a gun shot, but I have seen the tasers used quite a few times. As a matter of fact, we had one EXTREMELY bad incident in which some pregnant girl slashed her child’s father’s side girlfriend’s throat with a knife. Yikes! Didn’t see it but I did see the blood and heard the story. Due to the police being there, the girl was apprehended and the other female’s life was saved.

In my own experience of a very large school, there is more risk with gang violence, drugs and drama gone bad than there is with a potentially mentally unstable person. I always watched from the sidelines–most of us did–as the violence was typically well segregated into little self-selecting groups. All said, I’d say we had a rather high incidence of school violence but most people never found themselves part of it. Then again, perhaps my school was just weird.

Why? Did she have a banned weapon or were her weapons not banned by the law?
No, she was perfectly within all the laws that are supposed to keep her safe - yet she still died a violent death. The laws didn’t help.

The state had laws banning firearms on school property - we saw how well those work too.

Criminals don’t obey the law.

It’s about saving lives that are lost as a result of guns. That’s what this thread is about. Is it so hard to comprehend?

Daily Kos?

:rotfl:

I’m sure it’s about as balance as the Mother Jones in depth analysis.

You should see the study by William Landes and John Lott.

Ther are numerous examples of an armed citizen stopping a (potential) mass shooting. Clackamas being the most recent.
Nate Silver began his career predicting elections on Daily Kos - so I have reason to believe they are fairly well grounded in reality.

Let’s see, last Monday (12/17) this article appeared on Daily Kos:

Columbine High School had an armed deputy

Ironic, isn’t it?

Isn’t it also teaching kids that the only time they’re safe is when they’re locked in and protected by a gun?
That’s the whole point.

The whole wide world’s worth of evidence notwithstanding, the freedom you describe of Australian schoolkids notwithstanding, AMERICAN children must be forced to accept that the only way to be safe is to be under armed guard. Apparently, it’s more important for them to learn that than to be free to learn under God’s blue sky…you see, the freedom for kids to be kids is not really specified in the Constitution. 😦

I meant for your assertion that abortion “only kills”. Abortion is far more complicated than that. I’m pretty certain you will find many people who claim that they were “saved” by abortion as well. That doesn’t make it true.

My point? Like guns - statistics are very useful when used properly.
What does abortion do apart from killing? Any loss of innocent life from a gun is awful, but the truth is that guns save far more than they kill, so there has to be perspective on guns and weighing up the evidence

Guns save more lives than they take? How’s that again?

If saving children’s lives is important, Obama can immediately do two things:
  1. Publicly call for a ban on abortion, since on the day 20 children were killed by a gun there were over 2,000 killed by abortion.
  2. Immediately implement Mr. LaPierre’s practical solution of at least one police officer in every school.
If money is a problem for Mr. Obama, there are a few things he could do:
  1. Immediately end all support for the terrorist “rebels” in Syria. He could then take the money and support that the U.S. is now officially giving them, and use it to fund Mr. LaPierre’s practical solution.
  2. End the wasteful and abusive Department of Homeland “Security” and transfer those funds to Mr. LaPierre’s new program.
  3. Bring the troops home immediately and close down unnecessary bases abroad. This would provide plenty of money to protect American children at home, rather than waste it on unjust military adventures abroad.
