Great summary of what I get from Protestant Forums.

I was reminiscing, and thought of this thread. For at least 20 years, my Anglican grandmother used to serve fish every single time we visited, despite it not being what they usually ate. It was too awkward to ever bring up, but she was presumably trying to be understanding, because (after all) what else do Catholics eat?

We were not overly fond of fish, as children. Particularly as, trying to add variety, she’d serve things like squid rings. I’m not sure we ever said anything to encourage this surfeit of fish, but she meant well (I hope).

Also, in a discussion about the role of faith in Girlguiding, a well-meaning devout-but-vague Protestant was explaining that all sorts of faiths are welcome in Girlguiding, and the Promise can be altered slightly to accommodate this. I agreed, with the example often given that a girl can promise to do her best to love “Allah” or another word or phrase as appropriate, as all that is required is that a girl try her best to develop her own faith and understanding of her religious tradition. The Protestant well-meaningly added that people worship all kinds of different things, such as Krishna, or (nods at me) some people worship Mary…

“Catholics don’t worship Mary.” amused expression

“Well, maybe some people…”

“Nobody worships Mary.”

“…I’ll stop digging, shall I?”

I do love her 😉 All the girls there knew I’d been to Mass that morning, as I’d had to arrange it beforehand so that we had enough adults around.

That evening, a different well-meaning Protestant (who was borrowing my “New Catholic Bible” because her own Bible was too hard to understand) attempted a very strange discussion of the Assumption, in which she seemed to be responding to an imaginary conversation involving things I had not said.

“So if the Pope says it’s true, it doesn’t bother you that it isn’t in the Bible?” is not a valid response to a brief explanation of the origin of the Assumption in early Christian writing, and the different traditions in the Eastern and Western Churches. I had not mentioned the Pope.

In my high school humanities class a student told me and my catholic classmates that he knew we worshiped Mary because the sign of the cross we made had four touches. Father Son, Holy Spirit and Mary!

In my college humanities class, some people were absolutely shocked when they were told by the professor that Jews don’t believe in Jesus.:bigyikes:

One of my pet peeves is the whole “Catholics aren’t Christian.” I’ve heard that my whole life, growing up in the South.

One day my husband, who is a lapsed cradle Catholic, asked me on the way home, “What is the different between Catholics and Christians?”

His Wiccan ex-girlfriend/son’s mother said the other day “Our son is lucky. He get Wicca from me, Christian from [her boyfriend], and Catholic from you!”

(I guess he gets football from his dad. 😉 )

I hear a lot from my in-laws (the product of several generations of Italian and Irish Roman Catholic) that the Church only cares about money. They really buy into the pop culture slamming about priests and nun having secret babies, and how non-Christian the Church is. 😦

I wanted to date a non-Catholic girl once. Went over to her house, met her parents. I was at a stage in my life where my faith was just blooming and I didn’t really know anti-Catholics existed, so when I was asked what church I went to, I simply said “St. Francis” and didn’t notice the tension that had instantly developed in the room. She wasn’t bothered with it, but her parents had a huge problem with it. They wouldn’t let me date her, and didn’t want me working with her. They had her switch to a different department at work and they would show up sometimes at work (wal-mart) to see how much we were interacting. They clearly didn’t trust me not to try to take advantage of her. What is most strange to me though is that, because we got off work at 11p.m. or later and it wasn’t the best part of town, they still wanted someone to walk her to her car at night and they trusted me to do that, which didn’t make any sense to me. 🤷

Sad thing is that she soon started dating a guy of her own faith from her college who did not treat her well and her parents quickly saw the mistake that they had made with me, but it was too late by then.

By the grace of God, at that point in my faith when I was in their home, they could have preached to me about the ills of Catholicism right then and there and I would have swallowed every bit of it. I am lucky they didn’t.

It drives me batty when I say I’m Catholic and people say they are a Christian, as if the two terms are mutually exclusive. I’m teaching my kids in youth group how to deal with this- If someone asks if you are “Catholic or Christian?” just smile and say, “yes!” If they ask, “well, which one?” just smile and say, “definitely!”🙂

I was sitting at a picnic table in our little mountain town a couple of months ago, and a guy walked by talking on his cell phone. He saw me reading the Bible, walked over and asked, “Are you reading the Word?” I smiled and nodded, he smiled back and walked over to another table to finish his conversation. I thought, “Uh-oh.” Sure enough, when he finished with his phone call he walked over and asked where I “fellowship.” I knew right away, of course, that he was an Evangelical. Sure enough, as soon as I told him the name of my church he went into a long tirade against the Church, how corrupt it was, how we emphasis the Our Father (!) at the expense of, I guess, more free form prayers, etc. The capper was when he told me that Catholics believe we are saved by the Church. Well, I kept cool, tried to enlighten him a little bit, but he was so set in his beliefs there wasn’t much point. He told me that he went to a couple of different churches and named their ministers, presumably charismatic Evangelicals. Clearly the churches this guy attends have a cult-of-personality element, revolving around the pastors. Oh, well!

You’d really want to pull off the mathematician’s answer there, wouldn’t you? 😛

I just discovered this thread and love it. I read every single post and the misconceptions are pretty standard from my experiences.
For years, my family were the ONLY “gentiles” in our neighborhood. The things our Jewish neighbors believed about us and Catholicism at that time still boggle my mind to this day. Here are some of the real winners:
1.)If we (my parents) didn’t give ALL our money to the Pope we’d have a nicer house, a nicer car, and could go on vacations… and maybe even go college.

2.) We couldn’t ever be Jewish because we couldn’t afford to buy tickets to (their) high holy day services like they do…so we had to be Catholic because it’s free to go to our church.

3.) Nuns were witches and we got beaten with rulers every single day at school.

4.) We believed in ghosts and prayed to them on a daily basis.

5.) We spent way too much time “helping people” who were too lazy to get jobs and make money.

I could go on and on…

I was in a debate with someone I presume was a non-denominational Christian over YouTube’s PM system awhile ago, and the above list was what he wrote to me (extended into a colossal wall of text) in a horribly bad proselytizing attempt. Needless to say, my factually accurate information made him ignore my arguments, and he blocked me because I’m “part of a satanic pagan cult” and “obviously blind to/don’t want to know the truth of salvation by grace through faith in Jesus Christ.” 🤷

His two most outrageous claims were:
  1. The Eucharist is actually a satanic ritual.
  2. The Catholic Church hates both Jesus Christ and the Bible.

Drives me batty as well. After spending time here and in discussion with Catholics at other forums, I am convinced this is a falsehood. And I have told others who say it that they as evangelicals could agree with about 90% of Catholic theology if they would just read it. I get just as much of value from reading Catholic books as I do evangelical books.

I think this should be printed in every Catholic bulletin!

During my brief sojourn away from the Church for about 8 months, I went to Dallas with my then-gf, because we were both interested in the Wycliffe organization and the translation work that they do.

We stayed for a week-long introduction to various aspects of what they do, and there was a bull session at the end of it to size up potential candidates and what kind of missions work they might be interested in.

The guy interviewing me got a little pale when I told him that I still considered myself primarily Catholic, and informed me that Catholics weren’t allowed to join and that he hoped I was behind “those days”.

He never would tell me why.

I still wonder to this day, and this has been a couple of years ago.

Whoop! Yeah, that’d probably have something to do with it. 😃 Been looking up some information on the guy, which just didn’t occur to me to do until now.

Oy, I feel like a goober. I had no idea the guy was a anti-Papal rebel in the Church.

I see that this post started a year ago. So, I may have answered previously.

The nuttiest thing that anyone has ever said to me was when I was going through RCIA. I had a pin that said RCIA. I was very happy and liked to talk about it. When I said I was joining the Catholic Church the woman I was talking to asked “Intentionally?” I mean, did she really think I was being forced?

If someone told me that, I would literally run away fast as far away from them as I could.

Apparently, on youtube, someone told me I belong to a cult called Romanism, where I worship Mary and the saints. I told them the history of such with scriptures, I was trying to be nice and loving/sensitive towards them. They blocked me. shrugs
