NYC Wet Markets Still Up and Running, Breeding Ground for Disease]

(Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.)
State reps in CA and NY are working on legislation to get them shut down.
There was a thread on this where it was pointed out we have wet markets and hopefully they will be shut down.
Now, a little context … the video here was shot by an animal rights org called NYCLASS, and they tell us there are more than 80 wet markets in the New York area
I had never seen/heard of them but I was wrong. Apparently they are pretty wide spread.

I don’t think this is quite the same thing as the wet markets in China that are seen as problematic. This facility appears to only have poultry. This isn’t the same as having a mixture of animals that can share diseases and make the jump to human beings. If they had ducks and pigs then I would see a potential problem; there are flu like viruses that ducks and pigs can catch and variations that humans and pigs can catch which makes the pig a potential host for the viruses to interact with each other.

I totally agree but I was surprise by the size of the number of markets (80) in the city of NY alone which is quite a lot. It is precautionary as who knows if they have ducks, geese.

I hope that there will be solid grounds for any actions taken. Not emotional ones. And not ones tainted by xenophobia or racism…

Why bring up racism?. I never saw the owners of the store in the video posted of that market. Granted there was different writing on the building but that is not uncommon in areas.

Are you unaware of the the expression of racism during this pandemic?
Is it not something that you hope could be inhibited?
What racism? This is a look at the “wet” markets which are numerous in some larger cities but a very small percent nationwide. No race was mentioned in the article.

What is so funny about that? They have all kinds of language usage in the city, different sign everywhere so what.

This is about what wet markets should be allowed and the states are taking up the issue.

I am not sure “mammals” are there but US markets to me, still appear a bit more mild than Asia but safety must be a concern for everyone.

A Hmong market is somewhat near me, 2 times, I bought duck there, I thought it was okay. There was no kind of “wet market”, you just went in and you could buy a cooked duck.

Some of those in China and maybe Vietnam where they might exist, smack of animal cruelty.

Of course, that’s relative I suppose.

These markets look different. It says in the article they sold it so I took it to mean people picked out a chicken and they butchered it which is a “wet” market.

Definitely not anywhere in volume as the Asian markets. Not at all.
“Their existence poses a public safety risk to the New Yorkers who live and work in these areas. Market floors and even public sidewalks are often covered with blood, feces and other biohazards that put everyone in danger.”
It is also about conditions in and around the market that concern them

I am sure the writing is in whatever cultural wet market it is. I know when the
ebola scare was huge they were finding items sold in New York markets that carry
ebola that somehow was smuggled in. People from around the world live in New York and I am sure hundreds of different languages are spoken.

Factory farming is the U.S. wet market as well as animal abuse. Chickens topped on top of one another, pigs as well.

We need to look at ourselves before pointing fingers, a lot of our current practices are disturbing not to mention the pumping of antibiotics into cattle and pigs lending to multi-drug resistant bacterial infections in humans.

So are the demographics of abortion and the laws Democrats support. There should be some consistency on this subject. So, I don’t think one should be lecturing others about racism.

Why bring up racism?.
Because to many people, including to many in the media, anything that a conservative/Republican does is based in racism, mysogeny, homophia, etc ad nauseaum.

(If any of these statements trigger any reader’s sensitivities to the point where they want to report this post, then please accept my most sincere apologies as I am not trying to offend but rather have a civil dialogue on sometimes difficult subjects. So please be adult enough to PM me about how/why I was so insensitive to you and/or violated the TOS).

I agree that the killing of farm animals for human consumption is still cruel to me.
I do try to limit my consumption of beef, pork and chicken.

Eating vegetables is not a problem for me. I love most vegetables, but I don’t think
I could strictly be a vegetarian. @DENNYINMI

Since, I brought it up, and the question was addressed to me, I assume that your analysis of motivation of “many people” includes me.

I can assure you that that analysis is wrong. It is also incompatible with a civility in a dialogue.
