The NYPD is defending the use of the nickname “Fort Jah” by officers in the 67th Precinct in East Flatbush, after a 2017 fundraising “challenge coin” featuring the term surfaced on an auction website. A department spokesperson also professed ignorance of the origin and meaning of the nickname for a precinct that encompasses one of the city’s largest West Indian communities.

According to NYPD spokesperson Detective Denise Moroney, the coin was produced by members of the Police Benevolent Association as a fundraiser for injured Officer Dalsh Veve and sold in the precinct headquarters in the Summer or Fall of 2017.

At least four other challenge coins listed online and bearing 67th Precinct markings also feature the “Fort Jah” nickname. Two of those other coins also feature racist imagery, like of a black man with dreadlocks being “hunted” by white police officers, along with a quote from Ernest Hemingway celebrating the “hunting of man.” One example features an image of an eagle holding a skull with dreadlocks.

Jah is big in Rastafarian religion. I see the Jamaican flag on the side of one coin. I’m not sure what this is all about. It also could look like a gag. So, no, I’m not saying the cops see the world like this until I know more.

The article does call the imagery used on the coins “racist.”

I have to use a thread title that draws people in because if a thread isn’t about the personal flaws of either Biden or Trump then most people won’t even look at it.

Amazing, maybe Veve’s heritage itself is from the Caribbean meaning Jamaica, Haiti, etc. Yes, he was born in Haiti.

i really wince when racism is brought into the equation. And often, it is not so and I don’t think it should be brushed off so easily. It is egregious too, to make such accusations.

Did you at least look at the images on the badge? Even outside of the fact that cops are describing themselves as man hunters, the cops are chasing black figures with dreadlocks. The reference to “Jah”, a Rastafarian term for God, is also present.

Did you note, Officer Leve is black and born in Haiti, maybe all of these people are from that area. Bahamas and so on. It’s a huge city, I don’t know what the set up would be.

NYPD too, is not majority white, for whatever that’s worth, it’s been national news, they’ve tried to get every one into the force.
 
Challenge coins are a great view into the psychotic culture of American law enforcement. The many coins floating around the NYPD alone commemorating brutality, racism, and lawbreaking by police tell you all you need to know about the department.
 
The cops on the badge are all white. The man with dreadlocks seems to be a criminal, trapped in an alleyway.
 
You mean the police on the coin? How does one know they are not Asian? Well, I won’t go further into this debate because this is a cartoon, it might matter with who they are chasing but you have light skinned blacks, I can not guarantee that these are white policemen.
 
Challenge coins usually have things of importance to the people making them, such as inside jokes, some historical thing, or something like that.

I think these are probably inside jokes loosely based on previous experiences.
 
An inside joke can be racist. I don’t believe you can’t see it though, and I think you’re probably a cop or associated with law enforcement yourself.
 
Exactly. NYPD challenge coins reveal the disgusting things NYPD officers consider worth celebrating and commemorating.
 
Depends on the circumstances. The disgusting things I was referring to were things like celebrating killing innocent people and commemorating the harassment and abuses of power employed in retaliating against a cop who revealed police misconduct, that sort of thing.
 
Considering passing around trinkets commemorating police abuse and murder to be disgusting isn’t rash judgment, it’s normal everyday run-of-the-mill judgment.

Friedman was a “hero” cop who gunned down four people, and all four shootings were ruled “justified”. One of the skulls represents a homeowner who called the police when someone was trying to break into his house.

This coin commemorates an incident where a whistleblower officer, Adrian Schoolcraft, made tapes proving widespread corruption and civil rights violations in the 81st Precinct. When he filed his complaint department higherups ordered a spurious SWAT raid on his apartment and had him involuntarily committed for a week in a psychiatric facility. The only reason we have any proof of this is because when they launched the illegal armed raid on his apartment he set up two audio recorders, one hidden, and the NYPD officers only found and destroyed the recording on the non-hidden audio recorder.

These coins, and the hundreds like them, are a nonstop celebration of violence, racism, and police misconduct. It’s a truly disgusting culture.
