The Obama administration, after keeping gun control on the back burner for over two years, is prompting concern among gun rights groups that it’s slowly starting to squeeze the trigger on tighter regulation.

In the wake of the January shooting of Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and 18 others, President Obama remained mostly quiet on the firearms front as lawmakers clamored for new restrictions. But the president has since made a public call for tougher background checks. The Justice Department launched a series of meetings with officials and advocates to examine gun control policy. And while gun-control bills in Congress have languished, the administration has started to chip around the edges with its own proposals.

“They’re doing a pretty good job … as Obama has said, ‘under the radar.’ There’s a lot going on under that radar,” Gun Owners of America Director Larry Pratt said, referring to a remark Obama reportedly made in a private meeting with gun control advocates. “They’ve shown us how much they are prepared to do through regulation.”

I am so sick of having to defend my gun rights from people who want to take them away. Can’t they just leave well enough alone and stop trying to worm around the 2nd amendment already?

To better control you with …

That’s the whole goal.

To control you.

If you are defenseless, then you are easily controlled.

Pro-gun groups like the NRA are paranoid. After predicting all sorts of bad things would happen with the present administration, they were surpised to find out that there were no plans for new gun control laws. All the groups did was gin up gun sales and make some impressionable people think the feds were coming to get their guns.

So, like in ‘The Fisher King’, the NRA rhetoric led to a confused man in Pittsburgh killing two cops in a shootout. A direct consequence of irresponsible talk.

So, now the gun lobby would have us believe that more control measures are coming. There is nothing like a common enemy to foster group adhesion. It also boosts up membership at place like NRA and GOA.

Just so we don’t misunderstand, Beau, are you saying that our president is not working to curtail gun rights?

The president is on record saying that further gun control legislation is not something he is interested in.

Do you think the current gun bill in Congress will pass? There is none!

The NRA and the GOA need to scare folks to keep the pot boiling.

:rolleyes:Unlike the left wing, which has been the first to sell the concept of “The sky is Falling” scenario in the Global Warming scare since Chicken Little did once upon a time.

Gee, maybe a few leftist try to do the same thing now, by saying that the NRA is directly involved in the cop killings as a result of their awful rhetoric…

Just as Palin and right wing rhetoric might as well have put a gun to Gabrielle Giffords head in the Arizona massacre.

The right wing is veeerrrrry scary. Our leaders speak, and we are programmed to kill.

The whole left wing agenda revolves around the policy of scaring voters away from voting according to their conservative principles, making the right wing out to be evil control freaks.

Fro the conservative right, the message is “the bigger the government, the smaller the citizen”. when it comes to the steadily creeping tentacles of the State into our lives, vigilance is required every step of the way.

Obama has actually EXPANDED gun rights. He signed a bill awhile back giving gun owners the right to carry in national parks.

Jusdt because you are for gun rights does not mean you are ‘‘right wing.’’
You are correct, but that’s not what I said. There are leftists who have guns - I myself enjoy skeet shooting, and though it’s been a number of years since I did so last, I’ve duck-hunted in the prairie ricefields around Stuttgart here in Arkansas, which is right under the Mississippi flyway. Something about sitting in a blind in below freezing weather that tends to discourage one, though. 😃

The right wing actively uses fear to maintain control of their “base.”
I re read you comments and it seems I did misunderstand you. As Mary says, your comment is wrong, look what the Democrats did to the Ryan Plan, they used fear tactics to get votes, accusing the Republicans of targetting seniors, but it does not seem to have worked since a recent Gallup poll found the Ryan plan was most popular among seniors.

Anyway, off topic.

Personally, I am for gun control, at least a slight amount of it. I guess you could say that I am always afraid that someone who could either be a criminal or potentially be a criminal would get a hold of a gun and use it in a bad way. So what I mean is that people who have a felony history definitely shouldn’t be allowed to own a gun but anyone else who is peaceful and doesn’t have a criminal history should be allowed to own a gun.

I recall a while ago there was some discussion about granting college students the right to carry guns on campus as a means of protection. Has there been any movement on this issue recently? As a professor, I hope this is not even a consideration: that’s all we need, students bringing guns to classes and demanding higher grades! On the other hand, I completely understand the culture of guns in the South, since a friend of mine from New York City moved to Louisiana and told me that virtually everyone carries guns, including professors and grandmothers. This practice is not equated with a culture of violence or death in Southern states; just meant for protection, collecting, and hunting (the latter forbidden by Torah, BTW).
