Isn’t it standard fare that whenever the President speaks there is security checkpoints and that people aren’t able to be armed?

How many people would be expected to come and how does that compare to say his inauguration in 8 months ago?

There is a huge difference between visiting Gettysburg and speaking there.Eisenhauer lived there. Im with Obama on this one.Huge logistical and security issues.
As am I Bob. Between the two of us I feel comfortable that we have a better notion of the logistics to Remebrance Day than many.

“How many people would be expected to come and how does that compare to say his inauguration in 8 months ago?” Tens of thousands with 5 to 10,000 potentially (likely) armed reenactors.

By rejecting the invitation, the president has personally offended some in the Keystone State. (Some people are easily offended)

Writing for the Patriot News, journalist Donald Gilliland called Mr. Obama’s decision “nothing less than a profile in cowardice.”

Mr. Gillilan’s obvious agenda has quite apparently overwhelmed his common sense.

The problem is thousands of re-enactors. I think unless you have been to a remembrance day ceremony it would be difficult to grasp what the problem is.

Meh.
There was a horse & buggy traffic jam when Pres. Lincoln went. Pres. Obama at least has the option of helicoptering in.
As for being busy or security concerns – who was busier or faced a greater threat of assassination, Lincoln or Obama?
Exactly. While I think that security is a concern, I think there were a few thousand guys in Pickett’s Charge that worried about their security too. They did it anyway…

And how did that work out for them?

The man is the POTUS. Sometimes the schedule just doesn’t work out. Perhaps he can attend next year.

“the schedule just doesn’t work out”? Really? It’s not like this snuck up on the administration. Next year? As a society and culture, we attach a special importance to certain anniversaries that are multiples of 5, 10, 25, etc. The larger the multiple, the more important the anniversary. Would you want your husband to skip out on your 25th anniversary party and tell you that he’ll be there next year? How about your 50th?

We have the first african-american president - who also happens to be a former senator from Illinois - refusing to attend a milestone anniversary of an epochal event in American history - the short speech by another former senator from Illinois that gave our nation hope in its darkest hour. The president - or his staff - knew as soon as he was elected to a second term that this milestone would be reached. He has been able to take the time to speak at functions praising Planned Parenthood. For him not to attend this historic event is a deliberate snub.

Yes, perhaps we can hold off on having the 150th anniversary until next year. We simply need to rewrite history. No problem.

That is very surprising, yet it isn’t. I’ve studied the Civil War for the past 5 years, and was privileged to visit Gettysburg. Why he wouldn’t want to is beyond me. I don’t mean to sound disrespectful, but couldn’t they just restrict weapons within a certain range, or just have him wear bullet protection in case a gun were to go off? I know, I’m really not that fond of Obama at all, but I don’t think murder is a good thing to discuss on here, nor is it the answer to our problems. Impeachment on the other hand…

This seems to be surprisingly disrespectful, but honestly I don’t see the shock of it. It’s a commemoration. If every president attended every commemoration to every major event in US history, that’d be a lot of work hours spent needlessly.

I honestly don’t see this as a huge issue.

Disclaimer: I believe that Barrack Hussein Obama is the worst president this country has ever seen, or will likely see in the future. I consider him to have done more damage to the American economy, international relations, and healthcare in the mere 5 years he’s been in office than any other president in the history of America.

I completely agree with you, and I am sure that there are a lot of people on here who do, as well. Yes, we’ve had some rather unpleasant presidents in the past, but he has really torn this country apart if you ask me. But, that is just an observation of mine.

I agree. Making a big deal of this takes attention away from the serious things Obama has perpetrated against this country. We should focus on the important things, not on this. That said, if Obama thought that attending the event would remotely help him politically then he would attend.

Why is every little story becoming an excuse to bash Obama?

Heh; I didn’t even use the story to bash him; I actually did the opposite, in saying I didn’t think it was an issue.

Don’t you appreciate honesty? I could just have easily said that the fact that Obama didn’t attend means that he has no respect for American history, or he hates Lincoln, or any other number of things. Did I? No; I stated, honestly, that this is a non-issue.

The purpose of my disclaimer was to make it clear to the posters in the thread that I, even though holding this opinion and intentionally NOT bashing Obama over this, still think he is a horrible president because of the innumerable other calamities he has perpetuated against the American people.

I am not sure what incentive he would have to deliberately snub this event.
There are all sorts of valid reasons the POTUS might not attend an event he was invited to. Some have been pointed out on this thread.
  • Security concerns
  • He already committed to another event
  • He will be out of country
etc., etc.,

I wouldn’t read much into the fact that he won’t be there. The POTUS is invited to literally thousands of events every year.

I think I was unclear, there are many reasons not to be there, but what reason would he have to deliberately snub the event? I don’t know enough to judge whether his not being there is good or bad, but it doesn’t appear to be coming from ill motives on the part of the POTUS.

To me this is a non-issue. There are many, many more important issues and reasons to criticize Obama.
