I keep seeing statements like “Mormons believe in Jesus, therefore they are Christians”. But *what *they believe about Him does not fit within the normal definition of Christian. This is my understanding: Mormons are henotheistic, not monotheistic. They worship one God (the Father) but do not agree He is the only God. They believe that Jesus is Divine… that He is “a” god. I’ve heard that Mormons believe that while He was on earth He was progressing to His godhood (as they believe they themselves can— well, not the women, only men). This belief is flatly refuted in Heb 13:8-Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and for ever. They use the same word “begotton” of the Father, but it does not mean “eternally begotton of the Father” in the way that it is understood by Christians.
Just because Mormons or anyone else believe in Jesus as “a” god, does not make them Christian. More info here.
