An acquaintance of mine acts odd at Mass – in a manner that no bright, friendly, energetic 65 year daily communicant should. This matter has really been beating me up over the last week so I’ll ask for some (name removed by moderator)ut here. I’m not necessarily looking for a solution (pastors have been well aware of what he does for a long time) but I would like to know the reason for his behavior?
He’s involved in everything from reading to serving to acting as an EMHC to ushering. I will take you through the Mass and mention some of the things he does that really take a toll on many of us – particularly at weekday Masses where his actions can be so overwhelming.
When he processes in as a reader and happens to be carrying the Book of Gospels (in the absence of a deacon) he kisses it before placing it on the ambo.
When we are given the chance to verbally add our Mass intentions his list can last for a good minute.
Why praying the Lord’s Prayer he loudly adds a “…Lord PLEASE give us this day…”
When we pray “Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word and I shall be healed.” he does it very loudly and he’s always 3-4 words ahead of everyone else. That might not be such a big deal except he typically does that from the sanctuary while serving Mass and he does it loudly. Afterwords he “quietly” prays “may the Body and Blood of Christ bring me to everlasting life” – yet we can all hear it.
If he distributes communion as an EMHC it’s always “Body of Christ, Fred/Ethyl.” If he does not know the communicants’ name he will say “Body of Christ, sir/miss.” It’s awful to be kneeling in a pew and hear name after name after name after name in a loud resonant voice.
If he is serving Mass he puts speed and showmanship ahead of respect and reverence when dealing with the Blessed Sacrament or the sacred vessels. It’s like he’s clearing a table at a busy restaurant. At least he’s stopped shoving purificators into yet to be purified chalices – at least for now.
I have discussed all these matters with him off-line as a friend and have offered advice/traning as have others. He listens carefully, won’t say why he acts the way he does but commits to doing better – and sometimes does for a while and then slides back to his old behavior. This has been going on for many years.
He’s a bright/nice guy and a daily communicant but he has no idea whatsoever about what the Mass is
I can and do look away when he kisses the Book of Gospels so that’s not impinging on my worship of God but the rest are too obvious/loud to ignore – and I have long prayed for the grace to ignore them.
Yes it’s up to my pastor to fix this. I am aware of this. But what causes this sort of behavior? It’s almost as if he craves attention and has a need to put on a show. I would love any constructive (name removed by moderator)ut. Thank you.
