Laura B:
My current favorite hymn is “Magnificat” (aka “Canticle of Mary” or “And Holy is Your Name”) by David Haas. It is set to the tune of Wild Mountain Thyme and has a wonderful Celtic feel to it. Does anyone know where I can get a recording of it with lyrics (I have a couple of instrumental versions and was disappointed each time when I realized there were no vocals).
There’s a beautiful vocal version of this on the CD, “The John Michael Talbot Collection.” (Hmm, but that one’s called “Holy is His Name.” Maybe it’s not the same song?) 🙂

Here are some of my favorite hymns and carols:

“Hail, Queen of Heaven, the Ocean Star”
“Sing of Mary, Pure and Lowly”
“Carol of the Advent” (aka “People, Look East”)

I like:

Hail, Holy Queen,
The Prayer of St. Francis,
Holy, Holy, Holy,
On Eagles Wings,
O Come, O Come, Emmanuel,
Lo, How a Rose Eer Blooming,
The First Noel,
Maria Wanders through the Thorn,
Immaculate Mary,
O Mary we Crown thee with Blossoms Today,
Ave Maria; Caccini’s version,
and Joyful, Joyful.

Liturgical:

I Sing the Mighty Power of God (from the Liturgy of the Hours)
Pange Lingua (Gregorian)
Ye Sons and Daughters
Be Thou My Vision

P&W:

The Earth Shakes
Lift High the Banners of Love
All Glory and Honor

Classic Hymns

Holy God, We Praise Thy Name
Praise My Soul, The King of Heaven
Deck Thyself, My Soul, With Gladness
Praise to the Lord the Almighty
Come Thou Font of Every Blessing
Praise God From Whom All Blessings Flow
Lo He Comes With Clouds Descending
Stabat Mater Dolorosa
Ah, Holy Jesus
Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise

Chants

Veni, Veni Emmanuel

Ave Maria - Bogoroditse Devo (Rachmaninoff)
Ubi Caritas (Durufle)

Contemporary

I’m liking this “Here I am to Worship (Light of the World)” song by Tim Hughes, which was recently mentioned in a Mystery Worshipper Report (a website of reports, mostly from England, of people’s experiences of services and masses in different churches). Here’s the website.

I have to say Angus Dei, it always moves me to tears:crying:
My other very favorite is Ave Maria:yup:

Ave Maria.

It always moves me to tears. It was my mother’s favorite hymn as well. It was sung at her funeral. Beautiful.

Which version of Ave Maria do you prefer?( Bach and Charles Gounod, Schubert are probably the most popular)

The Eucharistic hymn, Ave Verum Corpus is my favorite. (by Mozart)

I think it is beautiful and the lyrics mean much to me.

I love many hymns in German and in English: Holy God We praise Thy Name, in the original inspired German as well as the English is wonderful, many others…

I’ll share one with which none of you are familiar, but one we sing that is my absolute favorite:

How great the bliss to be a sheep of Jesus,
And to be guided by His Shepherd’s staff.
Earth’s greatest honors,howsoe’er they please us,
Compared to this are vain and empty chaff.
Yea, what this world can never give
May through the Shepherd’s grace
Each needy sheep receive.

Here is a pasture rich and never failing;
Here living waters in abundance flow.
None can conceive the grace with them prevailing
Who Jesus’ Shepherd Voice obey and know;
He banishes all fear and strife
And leads them gently on
To everlasting life.

I MUCH prefer Bach and Gounod…Perhaps it’s because there is just plain overkill on the Schubert. Bach’s is just a refreshing change to hear.

While i’m here i’ll go ahead and fill you in on my favourites (because i know you’re all dying to know!)

I love/cant live without the ones like “how great thou art” and “o Lord I am not worthy”

ooh, “i am the bread of life” is another great one

and occasionally I even like a newer one, such as “blest are they” “you are mine”

or the Protestant kind 😉 … In the Garden or Old Rugged Cross for instance
yup, i got a Protestant momma:yup:
(and i notice they’re sneaking into our hymnals)

I have two most favorites, and can’t decide between them :hmmm: Credo… and Sanctus oh,…and the Te Deum too! Oh, I’m sorry… they aren’t hymns there’re chants. My mistake, sorry :banghead:

I wait for Advent every year just to sing this hymn. Tears are streaming down my face right now…
  1. Lo! He comes, with clouds descending,
    once for our salvation slain;
    thousand thousand saints attending
    swell the triumph of his train;
    Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!
    Christ the Lord returns to reign.
  2. Every eye shall now behold him,
    robed in dreadful majesty;
    those who set at nought and sold him,
    pierced, and nailed him to the tree,
    deeply wailing, deeply wailing, deeply wailing,
    shall the true Messiah see.
  3. Those dear tokens of his passion
    still his dazzling body bears,
    cause of endless exultation
    to his ransomed worshipers;
    with what rapture, with what rapture, with what rapture
    gaze we on those glorious scars!
  4. Yea, amen! Let all adore thee,
    high on thine eternal throne;
    Savior, take the power and glory;
    claim the kingdom for thine own:
    Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!
    Thou shalt reign, and thou alone.
Words:Charles Wesley (1707-1788) Music: Helmsley, melody Augustine Arne (1710-1778)

That’s definitely on the top of my list! Along with “My Song Is Love Unknown” and “Christ Is Made the Sure Foundation” set to the tune Westminster Abbey. Then “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross,” “Drop, Drop, Slow Tears,” all the great Gregorian stuff, “For All the Saints,” . . . I have a HUNDRED favorites. And, by the way, in my parish, we NEVER sing any of them, nor ever will while our present pastor remains, whose repertory does not extend past Haas, Haugen & Joncas. He forbids the use of ANY Latin.

What tune do you use for that?

What tune do you use for that?
It has its own tune, one by Johann Gottlieb Wagner, 1742. I’ll scout around=== am pretty sure the hymnal is online or on a diskette, I could send it to you if I could find it.

Non Nobis

"Non nobis, Dominae
Dominae, non nobis, Dominae.
Sed nomine, sed nomine
Tuo da gloria!"

**
"Not to us, Lord,
Lord, not to us, Lord.
But to your name, but to your name,
Give the praise!"

I don’t know if it has a name, other than the name of the hymn tune, Helmsley. It can be found in the *Episcopal Hymnal 1982 *at number 57. I think it’s also in Worship, but I don’t know the number. But you can look at the *index of first lines *to find any hymn you like, including this one.
