yes Cyber Hymnal is great…one of my favorite hymns is “Ah, Holy Jesus”…you can look it up on Cyber Hymnal…

I like the lyrics…especially the second verse…

Who was the guilty? Who brought this upon Thee?
Alas, my treason, Jesus, hath undone Thee.
’Twas I, Lord, Jesus, I it was denied Thee!
I crucified Thee.

Be not Afraid

Here I am Lord

Does anyone know where I can find these (or any hymns) online? I found a midi of Be Not Afraid, and the lyrics (which I don’t need). Just curious as I wouldn’t mind listening sometimes at work.

Salve Regina
Pange Lingua (as song in a magnificent baritone by an African deacon at the last 40 hrs closing I attended in Detroit)
Panis Angelicus
Gounod Ave Maria
Where Sheep May Safely Graze

Does anybody remember Mary Star of the Sea? (also the latin version Stella Maris)

Beautiful Mother

Lo how a rose e’er blooming (auf Deutsch)

We are one body (Dana Scallon)
Holy is His Name (JMT)
Joseph’s song by Michael Card (never heard it sung as a hymn but love the song)
Most of the Youth 2000 songbook

Simple Gifts
City of God (sung at the tempo written)

Anything sung at the proper tempo in the proper key

Pescador des Hombres (Lord, you knew what my boat carried, neither money nor weapons for fighting, but nets for fishing, my daily labor, O Lord, with a glance you embraced me, then you smiled, and whispered my name. I’ve abandoned my boat in the harbor, close to you, I will seek other shores.)
This is my favorite Spanish hymn, also love
Santa Maria Ven
Bendito Bendito Bendito

Bob Hurd’s bilingual Psalm settings (some, not all)

Desde Aurora

Hail Mary Gentle Women

What a mighty God we serve
He is the King of Kings
We bring the sacrifice of Praise unto the House of the Lord

absolute favorito: Days of Elijah

Am I right, Steubenville?

Amazing Grace is my favorite. I listen to it every day when I drive. I bought LeAnn Rymes hymn CD along with her patriotic songs. Her rendition is so good.

A close second for me is On Eagels Wings.

I have bought some amazing CD’s to listen to of church music, when I get tired of the news on the radio. I have to drive several times a day, and the music is a “God send”.

I’m with you. We have wonderful classical station here in St Louis and I always listen to music as I drive–which is lot—it helps in the hellish traffic. I listen to music a lot while I carve too, the 2 together are very soothing. I have some wonderful choral CDs with church music, lots of Men’s Choruses, the Venna Boys’ Choir–I love to hear boys singing, it’s like the Holy Angels…

What a nice thread - to hear everyone’s favorites.

Mine are:
How Great Thou Art
Here I am Lord
On Eagle’s Wings

and on Easter Sunday…Jesus Christ Has Risen Today!

When I hear these songs, tears well in my eyes just meditating on the words.

Ah! You strike a sharp chord here. I am absolutely passionate for male chorus (men & boys comes second). Right now I am dizzying myself with the centennial CD of St. Joseph’s Seminary – the final cut: Montoni’s Tu Es Sacerdos. Not a hymn, actually, but an anthem. Very “male.” Very robust. Sublime!

Sons of God
  1. Brothers, sisters, we are one
and our life has just begun.
in the spirit we are young
    we can live forever.
REFRAIN
Sons of God, hear His Holy Word!
Gather round the table of the Lord.
Eat His body, drink His blood.
And well sing a song of love:
Allelu- allelu- allelu- alleluja!
  1. Shout together to the Lord
    who has promised our reward
    happiness a hundredford
    and well live forever.
  2. Jesus gave a new command
that we love our fellow man
till we reach the promised land
    where well live forever.
Let us break bread together
  1. Let us break bread together on our knees,
let us break bread together on our knees.
When I fall on my knees with my face to the rising sun,
O Lord, have mercy on me.
  2. Let us drink wine together on our knees,
let us drink wine together on our knees.
When I fall on my knees with my face to the rising sun,
O Lord, have mercy on me.
  3. Let us praise God together on our knees,
let us praise God together on our knees.
When I fall on my knees with my face to the rising sun,
O Lord, have mercy on me.

More than just a nice thread, I am really making use of this.

Not being a cradle Catholic, I had never heard of Panis Angelicus. When I saw it posted here, I found it, listened to it and fell in love. I plan on using it soon in the Mass.

Thank you all for responding to this rather informal poll. I hope others who are involved in selecting songs for Mass find this thread.

Robust and sublime indeed. I used to love to hear the guys from St. Tikhon’s Seminary in Scranton PA sing. WOW, talk about your basses. Yippee. Have you got the CD Number for the St. Joseph’s Seminary CD? Sounds wonderful. 👍

I like Tantum Ergo and O Salutaris and Panis Angelicus
and the Ave Maria that is by Gounoud (how to spell it?)
and He Will Raise You Up On the Last Day
and Holy Holy Holy
and Holy God we Praise Thy Name
and especially O Sacrament Most Holy
and Most especially “Oh Praise Him, Oh Praise Him Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia” are the words…I don’t know the name I think the words were from St. Francis

That hymn by St. Francis of Assisi is “All Creatures of our God and King, lift up your voice and with us sing. Alleluia” It’s based on his hymn “Brother Sun, Sister Moon”

ANOTHer wonderful hymn, one I haven’t seen mentioned yet is “Fairest Lord Jesus” aka “Beautiful Savior”, a translation of the German Silesian folk Hymn, “Schoenster Herr Jesu”, the Crusaders’ Hymn:

Fairest Lord Jesus,
Ruler of all Nature,
O Thou of God and Man the Son!
Thee will I cherish, Thee will I honor,
Thou my soul’s Glory, Joy and Crown.

Fair are the meadows,
Fairer still the woodlands,
Robed in the blooming garb of Spring.
Jesus is fairer, Jesus is purer.
He makes the woeful heart to sing.

Fair is the sunshine,
Fairer still the moonlight
And all the twinkling starry host;
Jesus shines brighter,
Jesus shines purer
Than all the angels heaven can boast.

Panis Angelicus, Ave Maria (the chant the best, but also the 2 popular hymns), Te Deum, Tantum Ergo, O Salutaris Hostia, O Bone Iesu, Adoremus in Aeternum, Ave Maria Stella, Salve Regina, Ave Verum (Corpus), and if you want a vernacular one: Faith of Our Fathers. I also have Christmas favorites, Advent favorites, Easter favorties, etc. (My favorite of favorites is Puer Natus in Bethlehem for Christmas.)

Oh, indeed yes. One has one’s Advent/Christmas/ Epiphany favorites and one’s Lent/Holy Week/Easter favorites. Indubitably. One can go on and on.
