On a positive note, what is your FAVORITE hymn?

Tantum Ergo, O Salutaris Hostia, and Te Deum.

I also think that the sentiments expressed in the Dies Irae need to be heard in many churches once again. Nothing wrong with a little healthy fear of the Lord.

Thank you all for your suggestions. I have already looked into some of them. Since I am only five years in the Church, I still have a lot of gaps in my learming.

I was rather surprised by Mr. Keatings response. I didn’t think apologists were allowed to be funny.

We Are One Body
On Eagles Wings
Here I am Lord
OUr God is and Awesome God.

Just to name a few.

Love Gregorian Chant and High Mass

Good thread. My faves are:

“Here I Am, Lord”
“City Of God”
“Sing A New Song”
“Be Not Afraid”

Practically anything by the St.Louis Jesuits.

Oh, “On Eagles Wings” too.

As far as the music from my 8th grade years and earlier:

Pange Lingua
O Salutatis Hostia
O Sanctissima

John

I am a child of the 60’s. I have no knowledge of Latin. What is the meaning of Salve Regina?
Basically, “Hail, Holy Queen.”
I understand that many people find comfort and beauty in Latin songs but you have to realize that the number of people who understand the words are decreasing every day.
But there is nothing stopping them from learning a little Latin!
I was not taught any Latin in school, but am teaching myself with a book I picked up used, and there are lots of resources on the Internet as well.
As for me Amazing Grace is the most beautiful song. I sang my babies to sleep with it. My children know all the verses by heart.
I understand that many people are attached to this hymn, but from a Catholic perspective, it is theologically problematic.

I love “There is a Balm in Gilead.” It is not a Catholic hymn but a Negro spiritual.
After Mass one Sunday when I was young my mom was sitting at the breakfast table laughing hard. I asked her what was so funny.

She explained that she finally understood a song she learned as a child (she was a convert to the RCC). We had sung *There Is a Balm in Gilead * at that morning’s Mass, and when she was little she had completely misunderstood the song to be *There Is a *BOMB ** in Gilead.

Re: “There is a Balm in Gilead”

I tried to sing that once, but it blew up in my face.

Among comments I receive from parishoners, this is probably the most oft quoted favorite. If I listened to them we would sing it every Mass. This is partly why I solicited fresh ideas. However, it is also important for me to remember that people love to sing songs they love. Thank you for your comment.

Lamb of God…I sing or hum that hymn all the time. Drives my kids nuts :whacky:

Speaking of the “Lamb of God” or as I often call it the Angus Dei  (I am a Texan and a recent convert), my son loves to remind me that it is not the COW of God. I hope my Latin improves.

Also, I like “How Great Thou Art” and “Ave Maria.” The latter is a bit hard for most of us to sing, though.
You should try singing Ave Maria in Gregorian chant the notes are nearly as high. 🙂

I love O Come, O Come Emmanuel, Ave Maria, Holy, Holy, Holy and All Creatures of Our God and King. I have to say, though, that I miss some of the old hymns from my Baptist days, like Just As I Am, At the Cross, At Calvary and Were You There.

hi:

I asked this on the least favorite board but more people are likely to have an answer here:

My current favorite hymn is “Magnificat” (aka “Canticle of Mary” or “And Holy is Your Name”) by David Haas. It is set to the tune of Wild Mountain Thyme and has a wonderful Celtic feel to it. Does anyone know where I can get a recording of it with lyrics (I have a couple of instrumental versions and was disappointed each time when I realized there were no vocals).
Thanks in advance and God bless you all.

My wife loves that song.

**Amazing Grace ** (when my kids were small, I used to sing all 5 verses to them every night)

**Ave Maria ** (can’t listen to that without my eyes leaking)

Did anyone see Ronan Tynan sing both at President Reagan’s service at the National Cathedral?

My favorite hymn is “Ave Maria”. When done at a Funeral Mass I have to choke back to tears!
