“Between truth and falsehood, between good and bad, there is no graduality,” he said.
With all due respect to the Cardinal, he is simply wrong here. If what he says is true then my experience as a Christian is false. Maybe I should have packed it in a long time ago?

“Strike?” “Counter-punch?” Is this appropriate language for a bishops’ meeting chaired by the Holy Father, or a boxing match?

If the way Hungarian Cardinal Péter Erdő framed the synod agenda is any indication, the traditionalist camp isn’t going to just counter-punch this time around. How will the more liberal bishops respond?

Sounds to me like the conservative bishops are just trying to stay on topic (which they had a lot of trouble - basically failing – doing last time). And, no, this isn’t a chess match, so I am at somewhat of a loss as to why “staying on topic” in terms of the state of traditional marriage and the brokenness of the family would be so troubling for any bishop or member of the laity for that matter. That in itself speaks volumes.

A definition of ‘conservative’ is the resistance to change and new ideas.

The very title of this article should give us pause before accepting anything said in it. No one struck anyone.

“If we speak frankly to others about what we believe, we don’t have to worry about not being understood because we, too, are children of our time,” he said. “Even if not everyone accepts what we proclaim, at least our proposal will be comprehensible.”
Bingo.

Given many of the key players in the last synod, including Forte, are still there, the traditional Bishops know they have to hit and hit hard.

Politics have always been a part of these. Vatican I and Vatican II had political maneuvering that is legendary.

Since when is proclaiming the Truth of the Church considered conservative??

I understand that it has been stuck with this label for a while, but the Catholic doctrines are neither liberal or conservative, but rather orthodox!! Truth in love! Always proclaim with compassion while hearing their voices as well! Pope Francis is an expert on both these fronts! 👍

“A definition of ‘conservative’ is the resistance to change and new ideas.”

Exactly. God is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow. No innovations, no new ideas…

No new ideas? Why then a Synod? Why Catholic theology? Why papal encyclicals?

Kudos to the Cardinal. 👍👍👍

"He acknowledged that many forces negatively affect families in the early 21st century, including poverty, war, and climate change. He then argued that there’s another kind of change that’s equally dangerous: “anthropological change,” meaning moral relativism and individualism, which he said are driving a “flight from institutions” including marriage.

In that context, Erdő called on his brother bishops not to go soft in defending the Church’s teaching.

“If we speak frankly to others about what we believe, we don’t have to worry about not being understood because we, too, are children of our time,” he said. “Even if not everyone accepts what we proclaim, at least our proposal will be comprehensible.”

Serious answer: do you think the family is the basis of a stable, healthy society? Do you think it is in trouble right now in our culture? What is the Church’s responsibility to the family, to society, to humanity?

I think that is why Pope Francis wants this Synod. And, no, you should not have to be labelled “conservative” and “inflexible” to want to address this issue as your central focus.

To clarify and deepen the deposit of Faith to a new generation.

That can never be done through ambiguity.
I agree. The question of the OP is how will the more liberal bishops respond? I don’t know the answer except it should be interesting. Maybe someone could give their view on this?
