Well, while talking about Onanism I have a question that comes from reading Gen. 38: 7-10. I added (9.1), … numbers.
(7) But Er, Judah’s firstborn, was evil in the sight of the Lord, so the Lord took his life.
(8) Then Judah said to Onan, “Go in to your brother’s wife, and perform your duty as a brother-in-law to her, and raise up offspring for your brother.”
(9)(9.1) Onan knew that the offspring would not be his; (9.2) so when he went in to his brother’s wife, (9.3) he wasted his seed on the ground (9.4) in order not to give offspring to his brother.
(10) But what he did was displeasing in the sight of the Lord; so He took his life also.
(7) is an introduction of circumstances, Onan’s brother is dead. (8) is a direct order from Judah to Onan what to do. (9.1) is more explanation what happens to children, introducing Onan’s thinking. (9.2) Onan went to have sex. (9.3) is how he prevented a conception. (9.4) is why he did it. (10) Onan is dead “what he did was displeasing in the sight of the Lord;”.
The issue is to identify what “was displeasing in the sight of the Lord;” so He took his life.
After explaining the circumstances, what was happening, why it was happening we are supposed to believe that “what was displeasing” is how Onan did it? And not WHAT and WHY he disobeyed his father but HOW? Really?
Does it mean that what Onan did and why he did it is OK and the only displeasing thing is how? Does it really make sense?
Why was all the stuff (what and why) even mentioned if it was not important? Why the scripture did not go straight to saying “wasting of the seed” is going to be punished by death?
Please, can anybody explain to me what’s going on here?
Thanks,
Jano
