I don’t think they’re expecting all that much. They probably just want the one is has the least detestation for them. The Muslims i know haven’t exacvtly acquired a political optimism from experience of political life in American.
This one, Darryl, is absolutely hilarious. Liberal social policy and Sharia law? Lock an Islamist in a room with a typical liberal, they’ll probably kill each other within an hour (more likely the Islamist would win the fight). Lock an Islamist in a room with Pat Buchanan? They might actually agree on a few things.
Of course, Darryl, you prove my point. Would you expect a Muslim to vote for a candiate who uses the same kind of rhetoric you do? Who thinks David Horowits is a reliable source on Islam? Who repeatedly attempts to subtly equate being Muslim with being a toatalitarian theocrat? Muslims have every pragmatic reason to distrust most Republicans. And it’s not a straw man either. I don’t pretend that all or even most republican are racists (I know a few Democrats who can’t even hear the word ‘Muslim’ mentioned without immediately making some smart-*** remark equating them all with terrorists. But I do know that a hatred of Muslims in general is among the most acceptable prejudices in America today, alongside anti-Catholicism.
And of course, by your logic, Catholicism is inimical to republicanism. We are ecclesiastical monarchists, with power centralized at the top. Of course, those who continue to believe in the great “liberal-Muslim conspiracy” nonsense will believe as they will. But they should recall that they appear to have been doing everytrhing in their power to chase Muslims into the other camp (and if a few nuts had their way, out of the country). When Governor Christie appointed one as a judge, it was these particular nuts who souted “Al-Qaeda!!” Maybe New Jersey Muslims will feel comfortable supporting Christie after he stuck to his guns against the bigots, but will the ones in Texas feel the same way?
