From what I can deduct from years of experience, for Catholics the PRIMARY purpose of marriage is to make more Catholics, the unity between man and wife is a nice secondary result.
I’ve never been told or read this in any sort of Catholic documentation.

:)Ann Coulter is just a writer. She makes a lot of money. She’s smart. She doesn’t control you. You have an opinion. Keep it.

If you are not Catholic it wouldn’t apply, other Christian denominations do not link marriage and children as tightly. From what I can deduct from years of experience, for Catholics the PRIMARY purpose of marriage is to make more Catholics, the unity between man and wife is a nice secondary result.
i don’t like the implication that the RCC has evil motives in putting forth certain of its teachings…

the Church is Christ on Earth…

i agree w/ what you are saying but the wording… :hypno:

I think that’s a moot point. That’s like me saying I’m open to playing in the NBA. But whether I’m open to it or not is a moot point, because it won’t happen.
I know Brad Pitt isn’t going to leave Angie and come to me… but i am open to the idea… 😃

NOt - he’s a democrat… (and not Catholic)… but uh… I’d probably still be open… 😃

In any case, the Church teaches what it teaches and the Church speaks for Christ and that’ all i need to know… I will now proceed to close my mind… thank you… 😃 .
how can you want what you’ve never had? maybe that’s one reason why the Church is against b-control.
But the Church isn’t against birth control… only non-natural birth control. i believe the Church is against NFP also if it is used to have NO children or very few children… like one…
If it is immoral to be married and not have children (when possible), I don’t understand how the Church can also support NFP. They contradict each other.
personally i am against NFP unless the family is totally broke, no income… one spouse is very ill or what have you. Cathlics use NFP too much… and don’t have big families anymore… The pope, i am sure, is against this…

there is supposed to be a valid reason for not having chldren… and it is only supposed to be for a time… No one in this coiuntry can use the excuse of extreme poverty for the whole duration of their mariage… but in any case, there is not always a valid reason for the way Catholics, so called, use NFP… a lot of them are just like the non-C’s… want to have pleasure but no responsibilities, nothing to keep them from their material goals…

I wasn’t intending to imply that the RCC was evil in any way-just pointing out that my understanding was that in Catholic teaching the primary purpose of marriage is the having and raising of Catholic children. I don’t think that’s evil at all, it makes sense if you want to keep the denomination growing.

Other Christian denominations do not seem to make that same prioritization, hence their more relaxed attitudes regarding birth control and gay marriage.

Sorry if the wording came off badly…I was making dinner at the same time. Multi-tasking doesn’t always work well.

I haven’t heard the Pope say he is against this… nor do I have any reason to believe he is.

You definitely have the right to believe whatever you like. However, this is a belief of yours and not one of the Church. I have never read anything to imply that the Church is against NFP (or marriage) if you plan to have very few children.

you’re excused…

just don’t let it happen again… 😃

but you have to admit… it sounds kinda “evil” to say that the Church prohibits birth control because it wants to make more Catholics…

What - so Catholics can take over the world??

well, i hardly think we need worry about that too much… seeing as how Catholics aren’t haven’t any more children than … say Baptists or Methodists or whomever…

then again, those who do have children are bringing them into a world that…

well, that elected BHO…

whoa… :eek::ouch:

oh Mr. Logic uses the old argument from silence argument…

I’m sure you havne’t heard a LOT of w hat the Pope has to say… Mr. Logic…

again, you are not using good 'arguing skills"…

well, you are if you are dealing with a child under the age of 9 but i hardly qualify for that category…

i never said anything of the sort… the church is against NFP if NO children is the goal.

I agree that an argument from silence isn’t very convincing. But it’s a stronger argument than saying “The pope, i am sure, is against this” without any reason to support it.

Sorry, I’m confused. Are you saying the Church is against NFP if NO children is the goal? Or that the Church isn’t against it, but you are?

akoso:
… and GWB… twice! Unbelievable.
which is??
The fact that GWB was twice elected.

he’s against it… Is that better??

don’t know why i put “I’m sure”… tired, i guess…

what i said is in plain English…

Of course the Church wants to make more Catholics. How does a group survive without encouraging procreation? That’s not evil, it’s survival. If you want to encourage a behavior, make it holy and make the opposite behavior sinful. Taboos exist in societies for practical reasons, usually having to do with the survival of the group.

As for the “BHO” comment-when I heard people on the left make similar comments about President Bush, I found it disrespectful and rude. I had hoped that better examples would be shown by the right.

i don’t thnk expressing my feelings is rude…

i had hoped you weren’t one of the 54%…

***That is not even ONE of the reasons the Church is against birth control.

just wanted to make that absolutely clear… ***

I don’t understand why people are so touchy about the idea that the Church might want to encourage people to make babies and discourage marriages that have fewer children or no children at all.

How does a group survive if they don’t reproduce?

that’s not pertinent to what i said…

and i would be the last to be ashamed of such a thing…

I did too. I thought Catholics would understand that insulting the President and the people who voted for him was wrong when it was someone we liked in office and it’s still wrong when it’s someone we don’t.

and of course, since I dared to defend respectful behavior I must have voted “wrong”.
