I love Blue Bell ice cream. I just got back from Houston visiting my kids. Had I known about Brenham, I would have called you or sent you an email and maybe visited you. I too was raised in a small country town in Alabama. Wedowee. Thank you for being my friend.šŸ™‚

What does it mean to be a good Christian, and do you consider yourself to be a good Christian?

… Most of the time, I’m an extraordinarily good Christian.

.
this is an odd statement to me…

I do everything i can to be a good Christian…

and yet i would never say this about myself… or anyone i know…

Mother Teresa was ā€œan extraordinarily good Christianā€. . St Thomas More…

this may sound judgmental… but i am calling it as i see it…

i guess i’ve found something else i don’t like abaout Coulter…

she thinks she is an extraordinarily good Christian… :hmmm:

I’d say she is likely a blind one…

i just think this is… a matter of her not knowing herself very well…

Even though i can’t find anything i disagree with her on (except that she leaves out ā€œstuffā€ā€¦)

i do think she can be too … cold sometimes… lacking in compassion. We know she can’t have empathy with unwed mothers because she has never been one…

but it would be nice if she could at least admit that she doesn’t know about… that … (as well as someone who’s been through it… etc.)

Hi to you, 7 Sorrows – you wrote,

You mean she should have focused, written, and spoke about Lesbians? And then divided the Lesbian mothers into groups? You must either mean Lesbians, or you are being dishonest. The total number of women who are;
  • single mothers by choice, and
  • not through death or divorce, and
  • not Lesbian, and
  • do not feign ā€˜victimhood’
**is as follows: **

United States - 723
England - 254
Canada - 12
Australia - 177

** These numbers do not include that group of female heterosexual businesswomen who remained single to keep their sexual apparatus available as a promotion asset while climbing the corporate ladder, and then later in life decided to become a single parent.

According to a recent poll conducted by the Dilenschneider Group (representing the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers), more than ā€œā€¦eighty percent of [divorce lawyers] polled said they had actually handled a case where they believed there was false accusation of abuse, as in disputes over custody of children, for instanceā€¦ā€. Are you the one to argue with more than 80% of the divorce lawyers, who say that the soon to be single mothers frequently play the ā€œvictimā€ card when divorce is imminent?

Even this thread here is overgrown with ubiquitous references to the ā€œabusiveā€ husband or ā€œabusiveā€ ex-husband or ā€œabusiveā€ boyfriend. In real life there is only a very small number of men who have no problem physically abusing their wives and girlfriends. According to the US Department of Justice, domestic abuse is virtually nonexistent for married women living with their husbands. From 1993 to 2005, the number of married women victimized by their husbands ranged from only 0.9 to 3.2 per 1000. rightwingnews.com/mt331/2009/04/ann_coulter_on_single_mothers.php

And of course, those few real abusers are the men that she became attracted to because he was the toughest guy in the bar – a fact which he proved by beating up other drunks who ā€˜looked at him wrong’, or who spilled beer on him. How she ever thought she would be immune from his violent temper, which he displayed frequently at the tavern, or at the ball game, or the hockey match, or the soccer match (Association Football), is beyond me…? She confidently knew that if any other man ever bothered her, her husband would beat the **** out of him, and teach him a lesson. Why she would ever think she was excused from being ā€œtaught a lessonā€ by her tough husband is also beyond me…? Remember the old joke that has a mountain of truth embedded in its crude presentation: ā€œWhat do fifty-thousand battered women each year have in common? They don’t listen.ā€?

Anyway, I’m getting off your point here, so let me steer back. You were talking about single mothers who are such by Choice, and not by Divorce or Widowhood. There are so very few of that species that exists outside of the Lesbian community. So why should Coulter focus her speaking and writing on a group of people which consists of only a few hundreds of people in the Whole Wide English Speaking Sphere of the World? (Again, that group being non-Lesbian single mothers by ā€˜choice’, and not by ā€˜divorce’ or by being ā€˜widowed’ who do not feign being a ā€˜victim’ of an abusive man or a ā€˜victim’ by some other reason which they whine is not their fault. When you get naked with a man not your husband, and have unprotected sex, THAT is your choice, and therefore, THAT is your fault).
i wasn’t talking about lesbians or the sexuality of these mothers and i don’t intend on getting into that type of discussion.

i agree with you. in fact, i don’t even think she is a mother and you don’t know anything about motherhood until you have actually become one.
i also find her cold sometimes and lacking in compassion and since she is a republican i believe that others think most republicans are that uncompassionate.

Hi Remember the old joke that has a mountain of truth embedded in its crude presentation: ā€œWhat do fifty-thousand battered women each year have in common? They don’t listen.ā€?
there’s not one iota of truth to that foul saying… Men who abuse women are cowards and not even men… There is never any excuse for hitting anyone, but particularly not the woman you sleep with…have children with. The bible says that the man who loves his wife loves himself…

this is not true either. most women, married or otherwise have children because they want someone to love… True, i can’t prove that… but i know that women who choose to have children without being married are NOT all lesbians… I’ve met plenty of singl mothers and not one was lesbian…
When you get naked with a man not your husband, and have unprotected sex, THAT is your choice, and therefore, THAT is your fault).
what an insult to men…

… the implication being that men are animals and can no way ever be expected to control themselves…

therefore any illicit sex that happens between them is all the woman’s fault…

Oh freaking please…

I’m certainly glad i’m not your wife… :hypno:

good point… she makes Republicans look bad… and even worse than that… she makes them look like the liberals always portray them!!!

not good…

and i thought her whole thing was to disprove what liberals believe…

Coulter is a ā€œpersonalityā€ out to make a buck.
And so she does…

I’m not God but i don’t believe that’s her only motive…

we can’t say whether it is even One of her motives…

I’m not trying to be rude but maybe you are judging her?

(just concerned about your spirituality…)

i agree with you in the respect that all of the single mothers i know wanted children and were not lesbians. i know there are the hollywood mothers like jody foster and the lady from the sopranos.
i don’t know why people want to judge so harshly these single mothers who accept the responsibility of single motherhood and do not go on welfare, food stamps, housing, etc.
some of them are financially well off.
it is sad that our country still is not made up of the traditional families like it was in the 50’s and 60’s, but our culture has changed so much since then.

she is definitely making lots of bucks and probably has to say some outlandish things to stir up controversy in order to get people to buy her books out of curiosity.

i have never bought one of her books and sometimes it is all i can do to watch her on tv.

she is definitely smart and savy, but i don’t know a lot about her personal life.

yes but i’ve known women who DID go on welfare… and did a very good job of raising their children… didn’t give their children over to some day-care center so they could go to some career… like some Hollywood women do… or others who have lots of $$

not all welfare mothers are bad mothers who just want to sponge off the govenrment… This is a terrible sterotype that needs to be dispensed with.

and besides… the government spends tons of $$ on ohter things that are far FAR less wrothy of the taxpayer’s inconvenience than… mothers raising their children…

especially when you consider that we are BELOW Zero population growth… and most other coutnries are as well… The Muslim countries are the only ones that are NOT … Tehy will conquer us in the end if we don’t do something…

Catholics who have plenty of $$ are NOT having big families anymore… They ought to be ashamed of themselves… (IMHO)

What Ann Coulter is really concerned about is whose responsibility is it when dealing with fatherless children. We as Christians are definitely responsible for our sisters. We should do this voluntarily because Jesus prompted us to. We shouldn’t have a government mandate to make us be charitable. When we do then people will be less charitable because they think the Government is taking care of it. I hope I can love ALL the misfortunate, but not because the Government ordered me too, but rather because Jesus did. Ben F PS Glad to see you online Dawn in Texas:)
i agree…

its getting so the Government is doing everything… Not good…

i just wonder what can be done to make gov’t not so BIG… and… etc…

we’ve become socialists…

you are probably right. i shouldn’t stereotype and there are some women who might start out on welfare, but not remain on it. but there are some that perhaps have kids just to get the welfare.

I think you’re right. She DOES make Republicans look bad. She can be quite funny, witty, and as other posters have pointed out, she can be quite inciteful. But her comments about the 9/11 widows, IMO, were disgusting. She is always angry, sarcastic, rolling her eyes, poking fun at everyone under the sun, and seems more of a gripe-monger than a dealer in solutions.

She is far more intelligent than these talking-points schlocks like Hannity and the idiot, Glen Beck, but she comes off as insensitive and grouchy. I think right now most right wing commentators are coming off this way. Rush is a good example.

As a teacher, I can sit and listen to conservative commentary and agree with a great deal of it but the attacks on my profession and our union get tiring and frustrating.

I agree to a large degree but if we’re going to stop this, the GOP needs to stand for something and present viable alternatives instead of just seeming like angry obstructionists. With the whole health care debate, the GOP drops ideas like co-ops or $5000 checks to buy insurance for the uninsured, but in the end it does not address people with pre-existing conditions and does nothing to bring costs down. And the Democrats’ plans, according to the CBO (non-partisan congressional budget office) will NOT be deficit-neutral but actually raise the costs of health care exacerbating the problem?

The Dems are a one-trick pony: GOVERNMENT…the GOP is a one-trick horsey too: STATUS QUO

I wish they could come to a middle ground.

For one thing she seems to contradict herself with this statement (from her book Guilty):

The most worhsipped figure in modern America is the ā€œsingle mother.ā€

What???

The most worhsipped figure in modern America is BHO… (or WAS…?)

She goes on to say that liberal politicians like to focus on the issue of single motherhood… the idea that they are victims… something i DO agree with (the focus part).

I don’t like what she goes on to say on this issue of single motherhood.

Example: ā€œThere is no better example of phony victims who are actually victimizers than single mothers. We’re not living in Dickensian England, with husbands dropping like flies from cholera, plague [etc] creating blameless single mothers… We have ā€˜single mothers’ because more than a million women choose to have children out of wedlock every year in America, and do not then wed or give the babies up for adoption. By their own choices, they consign their children to starting life with second-class status.ā€

I agree with that, except for the 1st line…

She then gives statistics…

This is what i don’t like: "ingle mothers" are women who, by their own volition, have done everything in their power to ruin their children’s lives before they’re even born. It makes no difference if the pregancny was unplanned, unwanted or accidental. And many aren’t any of those. Getting pregnant isn’t like catching the flu. There are volitional acts involved…"

Maybe i don’t even disagree with this because she doesn’t use the word ā€œintentionallyā€ to qualify how women ruin their children’s lives by not marrying. But that’s what she seems to be implying.

She doesn’t seem to take into consideration that not all women are raised in a solidly Christian home, one where moral values are taught (and emotional support/good example provided, etc).

We have had 40 yrs of the ā€œSexual Revolutionā€ to deal with… People (especially young, naive women) ARE influenced by society’s mores… even when they tend to think they are acting independently, making their own decisions…

No woman deliberately gets pregnant and/or has a child just to mess up his/her life.
I don’t understand why she can’t seem to allow for such things as psychological problems, lack of (true) religion, lack of love (some women have children because they want love, have never really been loved…). Does she ever think of such things? Or is she so seemingly cold and apparetly unfeeling because she’s never really known any poor, single mothers on welfare? or what???

If she had said something about how these psychological kinds of issues can seriously affect and influence a woman (and men also) i wouldn’t now be complaining. But she didn’t…

So i can understand people complaining out her ā€œbedside mannerā€

Your comments?

Distracted,

Perhaps you are coming to see why some of us respond so badly to Ms. Coulter. This is an excellent example.

Now, in order to be fair to her, let me say that there is a kernel of truth to what she’s saying. Some elements of our society do glorify single parenthood in a way that plays down the importance of marriage and the two-parent family. So I see what she’s going after. But I think there’s more wrong with her approach than a lack of ā€œbedside manner.ā€ She has embraced an ideology that glorifies individualism, hard work, prudent choices, and is willing to punish and shame those who don’t live up to these values in the interest of creating a strong, self-controlled, prosperous society. And this basic ideological stance isn’t just a bit harsh. It’s fundamentally evil by the standards of the Gospel. It is a classic example of scapegoating. As Christians, we follow and worship the One who became the ā€œscapegoat,ā€ who took our sins upon Himself and suffered outside the city walls, where the refuse of society is thrown. Whatever Ann Coulter says about single mothers (if it is not said in the spirit of charity, helping them see their errors and live godly lives) she is saying about Jesus. She is quite literally committing blasphemy.

Furthermore, as Christians we are called to believe in original sin. The line between good and evil runs not between societies or individuals but within them. In its simplest form, ā€œit’s not my brother or my sister, but it’s me, O Lord.ā€ That doesn’t mean that she has no legitimate points. But she not only drowns out her legitimate points by her excessive rhetoric, but far more seriously she puts those legitimate points in a fundamentally evil and anti-Christian ideological context.

Coulter is a ā€œpersonalityā€ out to make a buck.
According to ā€œdistracted,ā€ Coulter went through an early period (as many successful writers do) where she couldn’t get her books published and was quite poor. I see no reason to disbelieve this. I’m sure she is happy to make lots of money (her pseudo-conservative ideology glorifies the acquisition of wealth), but I think she genuinely believes that she is serving a righteous cause. Her views are reprehensible enough in themselves that we don’t need to speculate about her motives. Leave those to God.

Just a note-- I don’t think I used bad language in my post above. I did not put the asterisks into the sentence reading ā€œ. . .her husband would beat the **** out of him. . .ā€ Apparently this website’s software must have a list of words which it ā€œautomaticallyā€ Asterisks out. But because the word I DID type has four letters, it could be misunderstood that I wrote a word on a Catholic message board which I never did write.

I did not write any word similar to SHOT, instead the word that I wrote, Asterisked out by the website’s software was more like the word CROP.

So, the sentence actually read, ā€œ. . .her husband would beat the cr-- ap-- out of him. . .ā€. If that word is truly offensive to the majority, let me know and I will conform by change.
If it weren’t so disturbing, it would be hilarious that you could write a vicious post like the preceding one and then worry about whether people would think you had used bad language. (And that you think that there’s any moral difference between actually typing the word and using asterisks.)

I don’t care a damn whether you say **** or any other word. But I’m mad as hell that you can defend male violence so callously and speak so disrespectfully and unchivalrously (not to say uncharitably) of women. (I did use ā€œbad wordsā€ in the preceding two sentences, as a protest against your warped priorities.)
