Hmm you’re the first “States rights” activist I’ve met whose gone to such an extreme as thinking that State officials can order the national armed forces to kill people.

“Persecution” and “Spiritual war” on a “devout Christian”??? I think you need to sit down and take a deep breath before you dare to accuse others of being careless with the facts.
Petergee, I agree that I need to take a deep breath before I post. I have been letting too many things get to me recently. If I have been harsh to you (and I probably have) then I apologize. My temper has been getting the best of me lately and that’s not good. More time in confession and purgatory, I’m afraid.

I never figured myself as being a “States’ rights activist.” I was just saying that it was the governor who sent armed forces in and that was to protect the volunteers from getting shot by thugs.

I do believe that President Bush is a devout Christian. There are many reasons why he is getting attacked by the left. One is a fear they have of him being influenced by the Christian Right. I also believe that there is a spiritual war going on, not just in this country, but in the world. Major issues are being fought throughout the world: abortion, euthanasia, cloning. The list goes on. You know the list. People are very adament in their stance. I also believe that the devil is working overtime. And so is Our Blessed Mother in her prayers to Our Lord and in her messages to the world.

Again, I am sorry for stepping on your toes. My charity has not been anywhere near the level it should be.

Fighting Fat, I have a friend whose husband is a very physical man who releases his stress through golf. President Bush is under incredible stress right now. He is trying very hard to focus on two major issues that directly affects our country and the world. He has people actively looking for a weak spot to exploit and if they can’t find one, making it up. I don’t blame him for playing a little golf. When I’m under stress, I reach for chocolate or this forum. (And I’ve been spending a lot of time on this forum.:o ). And my stresses are miniscule compared to what he is facing day after day.

Sometimes, a little fresh air and a little exercise allows you to breathe again and clears up your mind.

While it has to be conceded that Mr. Bush seems to have a greater need to seek relief from Washington than past presidents, a certain amount of recreation is a legitimate pursuit. (At least he’s not wasting his time on internet forums. ;))

The real question is…did he take any mulligans? (I’m kidding! I’m kidding! Hold the flames!)

I can’t say I like the wording of all of the options, but I voted "I have some reservations about him, but mostly like his policies"

I would like to see (have seen) more fundamental reform of our government. Such as…
  • Removing the Federal Government from welfare programs…it should be handled at the state level
  • Removing the Federal Government from education…it should be handled at the state and/or county level.
  • Revamp our tax system with either a flat tax or national sales tax…or a more simplified graduated tax, but simplification is key!
  • Privatizing of Social Security…if the government is going to be involved in a forced retirement program, why not allow those in lower income to create some real savings for their families?
I have some scepticism on the handling of the war on terrorism, but I don’t buy the ridiculous 'he did it for money, revenge, et al" claims. He is guilty of some good ole boy politics, but this can be said about any politician.

My personal, subjective impression - He has a good heart, loves God and wants the best for our country. (btw…the same description could apply to Jimmy Carter, so that alone won’t do it.)

Regarding Bill Clinton, I didn’t agree with a lot of his policies or his personal ethics, but I also think he wanted what is best for the country. Unfortunately, I feel his desire for a personal legacy caused him to make decisions based on popularity.

#1 most important reason I support President Bush…judges. I believe his judicial appointments will further a lot of life causes.

God Bless,

Robert

I find Bush’s persona, manner of speaking, and some things that he says to be arrogant and annoying, and sometimes terrible. (He also laughs when he talks about things or acts too upbeat when talking about the death toll in iraq or the hurricane.) I also think Iraq was a mistake. HOWEVER, it seems to be the “cool” thing to hate Bush and blame him for everything, especially for young people like me. I really cant stand it how people just rip apart Bush, mainly to be cool. He’s not evil, and I doubt hes a conspirator, but that doesnt mean I have to support him either. I’m a realist…I dont worship Bush but neither do I accuse him of all the world’s ailments.

Thank you for the apology, that was a very refreshing and pleasant surprise. Yes I know Bush is a practising Christian (don’t know about “devout”) and maybe some of the criticism of him by some is because they hate Christianity. But I think most of the criticism is solidly based nad not motivated by religious differences. Clinton was also a practising Christian I believe.

Wow, I haven’t been following this thread I started, but I’m really proud of everyone for keeping it alive with your courteous replies and good manners! 👍

Bush is not a racist…

He is just not very smart. He says stupid things and they come back to haunt him in a stupid way.

The comments about rebuilding Trent Lott’s home and sitting on the porch with him… come on now… he was saying that to poor people who will not be able to return to rebuilt homes. That’s just stupid talk.

I’m glad he can’t run again. He has fixed it so that Jeb will never become President… and that’s a good thing.

You are vey astute in your assessment of people who like to “rip apart” politicians because it’s the cool thing to do. The same happened with Clinton. IMNSHO it’s a gang mentality, no matter what the political bent.

As far as your take on Bush’s persona, I would recommend caution. It is easy to judge people on the outward appearance as displayed in our media, but you don’t really know their heart based on the sound-bites and brief videos. Some people don’t convey themselves as well as others. The people I’ve spoken with who have actually interfaced with GHW Bush, Clinton and GW Bush, found them very engaging and compassionate people.

God Bless,

Robert

I agree that they are engaging and compassionate personally. I met Clinton and he is extremely personable.

But, I’d rather have an SOB in office who does things right than engaging and compassionate people who are befuddled in the face of a crisis. (E.g., Nixon, no charmer by any stretch, was the man who began relations with China.)

I fully support President Bush and I think he is one of our most caring Presidents. Of course the Liberals trash him, what else can they do??
Howard Dean spoke at the National Baptist Convention of America, and said that race played a role in the casualty numbers and blamed President Bush for the disportionate numbers of black hurricane victims. How ridiculous!!

Does caring equate to effective?

Not just the Liberals. Bush’s support numbers are low and getting lower.

You are correct.
and blamed President Bush for the disportionate numbers of black hurricane victims.
He did not blame Bush for that.

Petergee:
If he had taken action six days earlier, how many fewer dead would we have? And when he finally did something the emphasis was not on evacuating people, but on sending in battle-hardened soldiers with orders to shoot to kill. There are some, indeed most, problems that cannot be solved by shooting people.
.
From what I’ve read Petergee, President Bush was ready to move in to New Orleans BEFORE the Hurricane struck, but the Governor said No, to wait.

The Medical Personnel were being shot at with stolen Machine Guns, as they were trying to take the sick from the Hospitals. Don’t you feel a need to take drastic action in those cases??

I guess it was the poor whites faults too, that they weren’t shown looting, so as to make the blacks look bad.

This race card is getting really far fetched.

Which of those compassionate people was “befuddled in the face of a crisis?” And, how was Nixon’s opening of the doors with China an example of great leadership in the face of crisis? Was there a crisis at the time?

btw, I already made the point that compassion is not enough in my earlier post. My comments about their demeanor was in response to someone else’s personal feelings based on the media; not that their compassion was an example of their leadership capability.

I suggest Mr. Bush.
And, how was Nixon’s opening of the doors with China an example of great leadership in the face of crisis?
I’m a liberal, yet I think that what he did was an example of great leadership there. Sorry you disagree. The lack of intercourse between the two nations and the need to redefine what our Asian policy would become in the aftermath of Vietnam certainly could be interpreted as crisis, if not an immediate crisis.

We’ll have to disagree on that one.

I didn’t say it wasn’t an example of great leadership - please don’t take things out of context. I asked how it was leadership in a crisis. I disagree on your assessment that the need to redefine our Asian policy was a crisis. Your idea of crisis must be different than mine.

Robert

I have tried very hard to like the President. I pray for him daily. Everyone talks about him being such a good Christian, but to be honest, I just don’t see it. Jesus said we’d know if the tree was bad or good by its fruit. The fruit from the Bush tree seems to be an increase in poverty, cuts in healtcare for those who need it most, cuts to education, cuts to many social programs that the poor need desperately, a costly and unjust war in which political cronies are making millions while millions more suffer, tax cuts for the richest Americans, etc… These things do not equate to pro-life. I believe that it is just as much the job of government to take care of its citizens, especiallyl the most vulnerable. We say we are a Christian nation so we need to ban abortion and pass pro-family legislation. The above list doesn’t look too pro-family to me. It looks very pro-rich and powerful. Christ was not pro-rich or into earthly power. To me, the difference is glaring.

Now, please don’t condemn me - as I’ve said, I’ve really tried and prayer and this is what I feel in my heart.

Please continue to pray . And do realize Madame that just because one disagrees with your political iealology doesnt mean they condemn you.

First: I’m not condemning you, so don’t worry. 😉

The problem with what you’re describing seems to be a desire for socialism. Socialism would be terrible for this country. The Federal govt is responsible for security, keeping our economy on an even keel and a few other things that I’m tired to think of right now.

There is a misconception about taxes. President Bush has given tax credits to everyone and not overwhelming to the rich as some people tend to think.

What happens when a lower tax is imposed on cashing stocks, mutual funds and bonds? People cash them and spend them.

What happens when you raise the tax on stocks, mutual funds and bonds? People keep their money tied up in them and there is less money in the market.

The rich pay a **huge huge huge **amount in taxes.

I heard a story recently. Let me see if I can get this right.

Three men went to a restaurant for dinner. A rich man, a middle class man and a poor man. They each ordered their own dinner. After the dinner, the middle class man pays for his dinner, the rich man pays for his dinner and the poor man kills the rich man for not paying for his dinner, too. (Probably a bad rendition of a good story–sorry, but the essence is there).

I’m for helping the poor but not so much that you take away their iniative to work and earn their own money.

We’re not rich, believe me. My husband goes everyday to a job he hates. I’m at home with the kids but I work part time as a church organist. I was giving piano lessons before but, I’ll tell ya, they take so much money out of what I earn (because I’m considered self-employed), that I don’t see the sense in teaching anymore. I am a trained musician. My husband and I are middle class. The Democrats are fighting very hard to take even more of our money away from us and hand it over to someone else.

New York State is notoriously Democrat and tax-crazy. Western New York has been sinking under the weight of tax burdens for decades. People are leaving here in droves to go South because of taxes.

More in the next post.
