The day you begin to focus truths of Scripture and relate that to the Catholic teaching, not the other way around, then you will really grow.
They are not opposed to one another, Non, and should not be studied separately from one another, because the NT was created out of the CAtholic Teaching. That is why there are no contradictions between the two. They are two strands of the One Thread of Divine Revelation, delivered once and for all to the Saints.

By the way, there are several people calling for you on this thread.

The New Testament Priesthood - that is, the priesthood of the Catholic Church - is superior to the Levitical priesthood because Christ Himself established it. Christ established everything including the Levitical priesthood, so your argument falls flat. The obvious comparison of the Levitical priesthood versus the Kingly priesthood of Melchezidek, is the Levitical priesthood kept dying; whereas Christ lives forever. No way a Catholic priest lives forever. No way you can validate using Scripture, but then the Church doesn’t need to because their traditions usurp the authority of Scripture.

Let’s recap: the entire nation of Israel was a “kingdom of priests”, the tribe of Levi served as a ministerial priesthood, and Aaron served in the highest place. Thus, in the Old Testament, we find a foreshadowing of the New Testament priesthood that includes the Priesthood of All Believers, the ministerial or hierarchical priesthood consisting of Bishops, Priests and Deacons, and Jesus, our eternal High Priest.

I’ve given you the following articles previously…now, I’d REALLY like to suggest that you print them out and read them.
I’d prefer to stick to the Word of God; If you need to go outside to make the point, then there is a problem.

You have to say that; to say otherwise is to deny your faith. By promoting something outside of Scripture makes is superior, not equal because Scripture does not afford and warns against such practices. You can’t even validate the Catholic priesthood from Scripture.

The obvious comparison of the Levitical priesthood versus the Kingly priesthood of Melchezidek, is the Levitical priesthood kept dying; whereas Christ lives forever. No way a Catholic priest lives forever.
Actually, most ofthem do. All who remain in Christ will live forever. Though I grant there are some that have not, and will be in the eternal fire.
No way you can validate using Scripture, but then the Church doesn’t need to because their traditions usurp the authority of Scripture.
Careful Non, your anti-Catholic hostility is leaking again!

Catholics are not confined to scripture because we have received the Apostolic faith from those to whom it was committed. God has preserved this faith, and prevented it from error, just as He promised.

Scripture was never intended to be the “authority” for the Church. God gave this role to the Apostles, and their successors, the bishops. Authority requires elements that are not possesed of Scripture.
I’d prefer to stick to the Word of God; If you need to go outside to make the point, then there is a problem.
You know, this would have been a terrible problem for the Apostles, who did that all the time! 😃

Further evidence that Sola Scriptura misses the mark.
You have to say that; to say otherwise is to deny your faith.
This is very true. To embrace what the Reformers invented 1500 years after Christ would be to embrace “a different gospel”. The Children of the Reformers don’t realize this, and accuse Catholics of having the “different gospel” because they never have received the original!

No, I promote a lot of great textbooks in my field of expertise. Such an act does not make them superior to scripture. That is faulty reasoning.

Scripure, in fact, warns in many places that the disciples should hold fast the the traditions, obey their elders, and listen to their Apostles.

Well, I can, but as you pointed out, it is not necessary. you can read about the role of presbyters yourself, if you were willing.

The Sacred Traditions are not opposed or contrary to scripture, as you seem to think. The Catholic Church does not hold them superior to it, either.

You need to check your context. This is in the future, not the now…should be obvious and not relative to the topic.

I am well aware of the context. It was a prophecy that at a future time (future to Isaiah’s time) there would be a people of God not limited to the Israelite people – but would include people of every nation. From these some would be called to be priests and Levites (assistants). This was fulfilled when Our Lord established the New Covenant.

You hold Isaiah’s prophecy is still in the future. ***Are you implying that there is yet another covenant and priesthood that God is going to establish here on earth??? *** If not, what do you mean when you say it is still in the future (that God intends to establish a priesthood that includes Gentiles)?

Hi NonCatholic,

(Re MDK’s request that you use the quote system properly):
To break up a post you are responding to, you need to be sure that each portion is introduced with the word QUOTE put in brackets, and is ended with a /QUOTE put in brackets.

For example, in your Post #82, when you clicked on “Reply”, it automatically inserted the above quote notations at the beginning and at the end. But when you break it apart, you need to
  1. insert /QUOTE in brackets after *"…Levitical priesthood because Christ himself established it." * (The bracketed QUOTE was there at the start from clicking on “Reply”)
  2. Then type in your response.
  3. Insert a bracketed QUOTE before start of next part of post you are addressing - and insert bracketed /QUOTE at the end of that part. Using Post 82 again as an example, type in a bracketed QUOTE before *“Let’s recap…” *and a bracketed /QUOTE after “…print them out and read them.”
And so forth.

Hope this helps,
Nita

**The Priesthood of Jesus Christ is not comprehensible by speculative reasoning of the limited human mind and so called “proofs” from scripture.

It can only be understood by those initiated in His Apostolic Succession…**

There no priesthood without covenant and rite. In the case of Melchizadek, the Covenant was unknown as the bible does not elaborate about the covenant known to Melchizadek that he remembers God and blesses the bread and wine.

The beginning of any (other) priesthood mentioned in the bible, is a Covenant from God.

The remembrance of a covenant is a Sacred Rite. The repetition of the Rite become Sacred Ritual, also known as an “Order”. A priesthood therefore yoked to God’s covenant and the Rite of remembrance of that covenant.

The Lord Jesus Christ, establishes a New Covenant simultaneously a Rite, by His command, “Do this in Memory of Me”.

The Rite He established therefore is in separable from His Covenant and His sacrifice!

Jesus knew that establishing a New Covenant of bread and wine would cost His mortal life. That is, He knew that Judas would betray Jesus and hand Him over. Therefore it is obvious and clear, He sacrifices His Body and His Bood at the Last Supper.

And this is why He says “This IS my Body … This IS my Blood”

Again, He clearly teaches us that His sacrifice of Himself in body and blood is the same as His covenant and His rite of remembrance of His Covenant.

Hence the priestly rite and order, He establishes by His command “Do this in remembrance of Me” is One with His position as High priest.

Now, … those Apostles who passed down the New Covenant along with His Rite of remembrance of His covenant are priests in the order of Jesus Christ, traditionally also referred to as Melchizadek.

Finally, the Apostle now know what Covenant was bound to Melchizadek’s Bread and Wine offering … it was the covenant of Jesus Christ Himself.

To take the oath, and have the hands laid upon you, in apostolic succession IS the priesthood of Jesus Christ Himself.

Anyone who is against this priesthood is against Our Lord’s sacrifice, Our Lord’s position as High priest, and Our Lord’s Covenant, and Our Lord Rite of Remembrance by His command.

Shake the dust from your feet of any who refuse to receive Him!

Can you cite a single example anywhere in scripture or tradition where there is a priesthood without a covenant or oath?
I’m not saying that.
None. At the heart of the priesthood is an oath and vow. I really can’t understand your “objection”. Just a question … are you Catholic?
The only thing I’m objecting to is your claim that it is impossible for Melchizedek to be Shem.

Through the faithfulness of Noah, God renewed his covenant (Gen 9:1-17). Despite Noah’s unfaithfulness, God was faithful to His covenant promises. So He turned to a new first-born, Shem. Shem received a blessing from Noah - “Blessed be the Lord, the God of Shem!” - which marks the first time in Scripture that God is identified with any one human being (Gen 9:26-27).

So, I guess I’m not understanding your objection. Shem recieved the blessing making him priest after Noah. (according to the pre-Levitical priesthood)

Yes, I’m Catholic.
If so, our priesthood comes from Jesus Christ’s covenant with God the Father. There is no priesthood without covenant.
How could Catholic priests be priests “according to Melchizadek” if there is distinction from Melchizadek’s priesthood?
I don’t quite understand the last question as it relates.

Yes. That is one point (not descended from Aaron) but not “the” point.

The point is the oath and covenant with God. That is the only point of the priesthood. A priest yokes himself to the oath of Jesus Christ, His new and everlasting covenant, His vow to save each and everyone of us, by His very self sacrifice, His Body and Blood.

No priesthood can or could be established without covenant and oath.

( Lookup how often “oath” is used in the bible. )

You do recall that when the bull was slaughter it was divided into two halves and separated on the ground. He who slaughtered the bull, and tore it in two, then walked in the middle of the two carcasses to make a solemn vow to the Lord. That vow was a very serious vow. Because you break the vow, you say “may I be torn in two like this animal”, not to mention, you cannot account for the animal bloodshed of the sacrifice.

It’s there is black and white.

I don’t need to say anything more about it.
I’m not saying anything against what you are saying here, but you are mixing apples and oranges. (Heb 7:3) is specifically contrasting the pre-Levitical and Levitical priesthoods in regards to bloodlines and age limits. This verse does not deal with sacrifice (which happens elswhere).

You said:
Without father, mother, or ancestry, without beginning of days or end of life, thus made to resemble the Son of God, he remains a priest forever.
– Hebrews 7:3
He says Melchizadek, " (he is) without father, mother, or ancestry"
Shem cannot be Melchizadek, as Shem’s father and mother are known.
Therefore, Shem as Melchizadek is a position contradictory to that of the author of Hebrews.
I weigh in on the side of Hebrews.
Your literal reading of (Heb 7:3) is unfounded and does not make your case. Jesus did have a father, mother, and ancestry (Mat 1:1-17) and Melchizedek resembled the Son of God this way.

**Without father, mother, or ancestry, without beginning of days or end of life, thus made to resemble the Son of God, he remains a priest forever. **

This verse is saying that both men were not from Aaron’s blood line and their priesthood was not limited to the time period between the age of 30 and 50.

**
Melchizedek is typology, pointing to a type of Christ, but is inferior to Jesus as high priest. Similar to the brass pole with the serpent to which the Jews were to look upon to be saved from the poisonous snake bites.

Hebrews is trying to reach Jews to give up their Jewish traditions concerning the priesthood for the superior priesthood of Jesus. This is why the fact that Abraham paid tithes to Melchizedek, is so important to the Jewish-Chrisitian mind. If Abraham was considered the Father of the nation and he gave tithes, than the one whom he paid tithes is superior. If Melchizedek is superior to Abraham, then Melchizedek is superior to Aaron, and since Melchizedek points or is a type of Christ, then Jesus priesthood is superior to the levitical priesthood; therefore the Jews should follow the true and living God through Jesus.**
Thank you, and I agree with everything you said! 👍 I didn’t understand what he was saying because it had nothing to do with our specific conversation.

Peace 🙂

Yes, I’m Catholic.

I don’t quite understand the last question as it relates.
Melchizadek can’t be Shem because Shem’s Rite of Priesthood would have been the same as Noah’s.

Noah’s Rite was not of a bread and wine offering. As I mentioned, the Rite is the remembrance of the Covenant. It becomes Ritual when the Rite is performed over and over in the same manner.

God’s Covenant in the case of Noah involves the animal kingdom an accounting for bloodshed.

Shem would be in the line of Noah with the same Rite. Melchizadek is not performing the Rite of Noah. Therefore, he can’t be Shem.

Covenant → priest → rite

It must be in the same line. Shem cannot change the covenant or rite from Noah.

I am reading Hebrews 7:3 with the understanding that the author is referring Melchizadek and not Jesus.

He is bring up the point of Melchizadek, … the enigma of Melchizadek as a platform to rationalize his argument regarding a change in the law and covenant.

It is also my opinion that Melchizadek posed a dilemma for Jewish scholars of the time, because the Rite of Melchizadek was known by scripture but NOT the covenant that preceded his rite.

This would be very puzzling to the Jews because they would have to ask “How is it that Melchizadek could have a rite that did not involve blood and that differed from their covenant and rites.”

This is significant because the covenant of bloodshed accounting is replaced with Christ’s blood.

Now consider the Covenant from God with Noah. The Lord says clearly that there must be an accounting of blood.

Those Jewish priests not receiving Christ will have no way to account for the Blood of Christ, except by entering is Apostolic succession and performing His rite (“do this in memory of Me”)

There would be no sacrifice possible to atone for the Blood of Jesus … no amount of burnt offerings … nothing.

It was not the Romans that destroyed the Levitical priesthood as thought by historians when they sacked the temple.

It was the Precious Body and Blood of Jesus and His establishment of the New Covenant that ended all sacrifices and hence priestly rites, save that of His very own Self.

Therefore, the priests must enter into the Mystery of Christ’s Body and Blood, with the vow or oath that comes with priesthood.

Hebrews, IMHO is describing these things and regarding Melchizadek, is showing that Jesus Himself “solves” the Melchizadek enigma.

That is, that Melchizadek must have been the pre-figuring of Jesus Christ … and perhaps even implying an appearance to Abraham as High Priest.

If I may join in this discussion…
This is but one of many reasons that no one in their right-biblical mind and follow such a priest. It also explains why Jesus told us to call no “spiritual teacher” Father.

You are probably referring to Matt 23:8 - “And do not call anyone on earth ‘father,’ for you have one Father, and he is in heaven.”

However, to take this literally, it means we shouldn’t ever call our dads, “father” (and I’m not referring to priests). The next verse also says:

“Nor are you to be called ‘teacher,’ for you have one Teacher, the Christ” (Matt 23:9)

Does this mean no one in school should ever say the word ‘teacher’ anymore? The context is clear that this has nothing to do with the Catholic priesthood.

More importantly, St. Paul even states that he became a ‘father through the gospel’:

1 Cor 4:15 - “Even though you have ten thousand guardians in Christ, you do not have many fathers, for in Christ Jesus I became your father through the gospel.”

Does this mean, St. Paul just did what Jesus said not to do? Rather, he is referring to the fact that he was the Corinthian community’s spiritual father, just as Timothy is called by Paul as his ‘son in the faith’ (1 Tim 1:2). Ditto for Titus (Titus 1:4). This is why Catholic priests are called ‘father’, while it is not uncommon for a priest to call a parishioner ‘son’.
You all cannot be this blind and ignorant not see the problem can you?

I believe you could make an easier time of it if you said you believe that Melchizedek is the preincarnate Christ.**

What makes you think that you are not the blind or ignorant one?

Regardless, scripture is very clear that priests are to be called upon for anointing oil (James 5:14):

“Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord.” (James 5:14, NIV)

The Greek word for ‘elder’ is literally ‘Presbuteros’, which in Latin is Presbyter, which in turn is likely the origin of the word ‘priest’ in English. Check any online dictionary.

That passage (James 5:14) is the Biblical basis for the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick.

As for the basis for the ordained priesthood, consider these articles:

The Office of New Testament Priest

The Priesthood Debate

Both articles demonstrate that there are three types of priests: high priests, ministerial priests, and high priests.
That is an old argument; the teacher and father of spiritual things of God such as a Rabbi or Catholic priest is the obvious reference. That is so obvious, but in order to validate your teaching of your faith you have to use the weak argument that has been around for hundreds of years. True believers easily recognize the point Jesus was making. I am not saying you are not a true believer I don’t know you personally.

You have to say that; to say otherwise is to deny your faith. By promoting something outside of Scripture makes is superior, not equal because Scripture does not afford and warns against such practices. You can’t even validate the Catholic priesthood from Scripture.
Question, How do you know what books are to be in the bible if the bible doesn’t tell you this? How do you know which books were inspired and which weren’t? Are you aware that the Corinthians accepted the Letter of Clement as inspired. Should it be included into the bible. One step further; Did you know that many Christians didn’t accept the book of Revelation as inspired. Should it be removed from the bible. Pressing on, how do you know that Mark wrote the Gospel of Mark. No book or letter in the bible tells you it was. So how do you know it was? Better yet, how do you know which Mark wrote Mark? The bible doesn’t give this information. So you have to rely on something outside of the bible to come to this knowledge. Such as Tradition.

Actually, most ofthem do. All who remain in Christ will live forever. Though I grant there are some that have not, and will be in the eternal fire. Actually a Catholic cannot know his destiny until after to earthly life. That is why many are praying for John Paul II; help him get out of purgatory.

Catholics are not confined to scripture because we have received the Apostolic faith from those to whom it was committed. God has preserved this faith, and prevented it from error, just as He promised. He never promised that to a Catholic Church and you know it.

Scripture was never intended to be the “authority” for the Catholic Church. God gave this role to the Apostles, and their successors, the bishops. Authority requires elements that are not possessed of Scripture.

**Actually you are in error again; delegated authority would be an accurate way with Christ being the “Chief Cornerstone”. There is a big difference between giving and delegating his authority. This same authority has been given to all the Pastors who are faithful to God’s word, not the false teachers that add and subtract with their rituals and traditions that usurp the authority of the King.
**

You know, this would have been a terrible problem for the Apostles, who did that all the time! 😃

No again you are incorrect; you are slipping. Since the Apostles were inspired by God, the very Spirit of God speaking through them; not stuff they make up as time marches along like the false teachers do; thus becoming heretics by usurping the role and position of Jesus. In the end the gates of hell will fall and great will be her fall.

Further evidence that Sola Scriptura misses the mark.

Do you even know what Sola Scriptura confirms and what it doesn’t?

This is very true. To embrace what the Reformers invented 1500 years after Christ would be to embrace “a different gospel”. The Children of the Reformers don’t realize this, and accuse Catholics of having the “different gospel” because they never have received the original! the Catholic Church has be inventing another gospel over time; I’ve even seen in another one of you posts speaking of changes within the church, so you yourself know it. As thought there is more and more revelation. Why not believe the JW’s or the Mormons…they have extra revelation just like the Catholic church, so why should anyone pick one or the other? God told us Scripture was sufficient to bring us to salvation; what more does there need to be? Nothing. Salvation is the ultimate prize.

No, I promote a lot of great textbooks in my field of expertise. Such an act does not make them superior to scripture. That is faulty reasoning.

No it doesn’t; it the presuppositions that make debate a rational argument. I presume the Bible is the only book inspired by God and God is the ultimate authority, which it and He is. You make another set of presuppositions.

Scripure, in fact, warns in many places that the disciples should hold fast the the traditions, obey their elders, and listen to their Apostles.
That is the funny thing about Catholic apologist; they have to stick to traditions as being equal to Scripture by using the Bible alone; this is why they attack and train you all to attack Sola Scriptura because it the rock that holds all those arguments against the leaking of other doctrines into Christianity.

Well, I can, but as you pointed out, it is not necessary. you can read about the role of presbyters yourself, if you were willing.

The Sacred Traditions are not opposed or contrary to scripture, as you seem to think. The Catholic Church does not hold them superior to it, either.

What specifically is an old argument? Have I not demonstrated that apostle Paul was a father to the Corinthian community? Once again, I quote apostle Paul who makes a very obvious statement:
