Our cat is missing!

😦 My dd is so upset. My husband is looking for him right now–he has off today, and he asked a neighbor who is out walking her dog a lot, if she had seen a cat this morning…and she saw a cat wandering around, at about 7am she said, this morning. I’m thinking our son opened the door this morning, to check the temp outside (which he does a lot before getting ready for school) and didn’t shut the door completely. Our cat has been sitting by the front door, wanting to go out, which he has never done before. He scurries out sometimes when we’re bringing groceries in, but, he soon scurries right back in, when we call him. There was no one to call him this morning though–if none of us knew he had ever wandered out. My dd found the front door wide open this morning, so most likely, that’s what happened. She usually goes downstairs first before all of us, to feed the cat. I think though that my son opened the door before this, and just didn’t shut it.

I’m so angry and sad. I yelled at my husband this morning, thinking it was his fault, because he came in late last night from work…and I accused him of leaving the door open. 😦

What a great way to start off the new year. Please say a prayer that we find out kitty.
 
Oh, and I apologized to my dh. It was a mistake. Mistakes happen. My son probably left it open, and my husband would rather take the blame, he said, than our dd blame her brother for the loss of our cat. I just hope he comes back. I’m surprised he would wander so far away, but we live in a townhome community, and every house looks the same, so he is probably confused where to head back.

Is this an old cat? Cuz my old cat went off and found someplace away from home to die when her time came. We never found her body. We knew it was coming, she just wasn’t herself.

Not to make you more sad… sorry! If this cat is fairly young, I wouldn’t worry much about this possibility.

Oh that sounds horrible. No, our cat is only 5 yrs old. Maybe in cat years though, that is a 1/3 of his life lived already? My husband looked again, and he said that another neighbor saw the cat run towards the woods. All I know, is if that cat ran into the woods behind our community, he’s gone for good. I hate to sound pessimistic, but those woods are thick, with tons of little critters (we live in Florida) and there are gators in the various ponds and lakes, too. Our cat is tough…he has his claws, still, but he is not used to the outdoors. I dunno…just feel the worst for my dd. She loves that cat, so do I…but he is her little buddy. 😦 I can’t help but be angry…I have repeatedly told people in the house…my son and dh…don’t leave the door open even for a minute! :mad:
 
Put the cat’s litter box outside the house, near where he got out. Indoor cats are so accustomed to using their box. If he scents it (& they have amazing sence of smell), he will follow the scent back home.
Don’t give up hope. Keep calling him, he is probably panicking & looking for home by now.

Don’t despair. Cats are extremely smart animals and “survivors” in the strongest sense of the word. Independant as they are, their curiosity is both a vice and a virtue for them.

I’ve been in your shoes many times. The vast majority of those times, the cat returned unscathed…sometimes after only a day or two, sometimes after months.

If your cat is 5 years old, I think the chances of it returning are better than if it were much younger.

great idea Zooey had about placing the litter box outside for him to smell.
 
Look in the bushes and trees and little cat size holes around the outside of your house. Look in your crawl space too (if you have one) because most cats are small enough to fit in those holes that lead to the crawl space. My cat never goes outside and once for some crazy reason he darted out the door. But as soon as he touched the grass he panicked. He didn’t know what to do and just froze. Since your cat is an indoor cat I am willing to be that your cat didn’t wander but is somewhere really close in a really good hiding place and is really scared and waiting for you to find him. 🙂
 
When our old girl got out, I did as Zooey suggested. I also put out cans of wet cat food, particularly near rows of bushes.

She was hiding in the neighbor’s bushes. She meowed at me when I called, then I had to bribe her out.
 
You guys are boosting my optimism! I was feeling down about it earlier–maybe you are all right? Maybe he is not far, but just hiding. I made some fliers too, hopefully, if someone has rescued him, he/she will see the flier and reply. One can only hope. My dd is so sad about this. My dh feels terrible. When our son got home from school today, (dh picked him up), he asked him about the door this morning, and my son said that he was not downstairs at all, until after our dd was down there, and saw that the door was open. He sometimes opens the door for a temp check he said, but the weather has been hotter lately, so he didn’t feel the need today. So, I guess my hubby must have not shut it fully last night? How scary to think the door was open all night? We live in a safe neighborhood, but modern day Florida …anywhere…is not a place to leave one’s doors unlocked. Anyways…please keep praying everyone. Thanks!

We had a similar scare on Christmas Eve. We had to clear our place out because of some smoke, and the back door was left open. One of my cats was out there, but I managed to get him back inside, but we thought our other cat, Matilda, ran away.

It turned out she never left; she was hiding.

Maybe your cat is just hiding. Cats tend to do that.
 
Does your cat usually try to sneak outside? i have one cat who is obsessed with trying to find a way out, and once he did he got so scared he hid in the bushes. Maybe your cat is closer than you think.
 
Been around cats a long time. He’s probably just hiding someplace close by. It doesn’t matter all the townhomes look the same, he knows which one is his. I’m confident he’ll return.
 
We have a cat that went walk about for 9 days, and then came home one day, sat down and ate like nothing was wrong. We don’t live in a wooded area with alligators, but still, after 9 days we just about gave up hope. Anyway, I know how you feel and will say a prayer that your little fellow comes home safe and sound. :gopray2:
 
When my cat is gone for a long time, often she will wait until night to come back. They either sleep by day or are scared of people. I am praying that your kitty will be soon returning
 
This has happened to me several times. I had a cat who was sure he wanted outside, and he would dart out every chance he got. He usually hid in some bushes close by (petrified,) or in the neighbor’s yard, but we always found him after a day or two.

I also had a Siamese, who got out and stayed gone for 9 MONTHS, only to show up on my doorstep as if nothing had happened. He was a nonchalant little so-and-so. I hope yours is not gone that long, Whatevergirl, but I tell you this because cats are quite resourceful. Yours will probably be back sooner rather than later. Just keep looking for him and do as Zooey says. He’ll turn up when you least expect him.
 
This time of year it’s impractical to leave out canned cat food overnight, but perhaps during the day it might not be a bad idea. Anything with your scent or the cat’s scent would be helpful placed around the exterior of the house, near places where the kitty might hide. I would throw a handful of dry cat food out into the yard as well. Check to see if any of it has disappeared by the next day - could be roaming pets, sure - but it could be your kitty.

Cats respond to their owners’ voices; keep calling for him. It wouldn’t hurt to go from door to door with the flyer, either - maybe you could get your kids to help with that task. Did you check the shelters?

When he comes home, you might think of microchipping him. It only costs about $40, and most shelters have universal readers that can scan and read any brand of microchip.
