40+ year of experience with the church. 🤷

The Catholic Church teaches that Jesus Christ’s apostles were the first priests. For more than two thousand years, it has been the duty of Catholic priests to represent Christ to the world.

Since the priest acts ā€œin persona christiā€ it is his duty to be the example of Christ (the Gospel) to his parishioners.

Would that it were so with all priests and that all did their duty…

Depending on how it is approached you may be right.

It would be nice if we could still visit though, yes? šŸ™‚
No, our borders will be fenced almost immediately. I fear it would not be long and we would be fighting illegal immigration from your side. Any visitation would be highly regulated and legal immigration would be based on political views and ability to produce a service or good. 😃

In American politics there most certainly is - not saying it should be so - just saying…

How else could someone be pro-life, pro-family and anti-just about everything else that a family needs to exist: the ability to influence just wages, to obtain education fit for earning a livelihood, to remain healthy without going bankrupt, to get assistance when unable to earn/work, to find jobs making the products they use daily…
Maybe you would rather call it rhetoric? Accusing the right of everything you do above is no better than Nancy Pelosi claiming Republican’s want women bleeding out on the floor.🤷
Hyperbole is this:

Or are you saying that Romney now cares about the poor?
You didn’t mention Romney. You mentioned pro-life and pro-family.🤷

In the last presidential election I voted for Bob Barr. I didn’t feel there was a difference between Barrack Obama and John Mccain. I have had a clean conscience for almost four years.
I like Bob Barr. But I do think that there was a big difference in McCain and Obama. However, McCain was a very weak candidate and was the choice of the ā€œestablishmentā€.

One of the differences I see is that McCain would have vetoed the ACA. There would be no such thing as ā€œObamacareā€ for us to constantly fight over. What fun would that be?

Seriously, how anyone could interpret ā€œpick up your cross and follow after meā€ could mean ā€œelect someone into office so they can take your cross and put it on someone else’s shouldersā€ is beyond me. 🤷

This passage is interesting, considering some people’s take that Jesus was a prefiguration of Robin Hood.

"While Jesus was in Bethany in the home of a man known as Simon the Leper, a woman came to him with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, which she poured on his head as he was reclining at the table. When the disciples saw this, they were indignant. ā€œWhy this waste?ā€ they asked. ā€œThis perfume could have been sold at a high price and the money given to the poor.ā€ Aware of this, Jesus said to them, ā€œWhy are you bothering this woman? She has done a beautiful thing to me. The poor you will always have with you, but you will not always have me. When she poured this perfume on my body, she did it to prepare me for burial. I tell you the truth, wherever this gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her.ā€ Matthew 26:6-13

Maybe CMatt25, who continually reminds us of our duty to the poor, can square chapter 26 with chapter 25.
I don’t understand your point. What message do you think Jesus was trying to get across in this passage?

The Mexico City policy? How many lives has it saved? In the countries we help, as in this country, most people have abortions because of reasons related to their socio-economic status, regardless of US abortion policies. It stands to reason then, that helping countries develop economically is the best way to decrease abortion and anything else has arguably little - if any - effect.
The Mexico City policy gives hundreds of millions of dollars to organizations like Planned Parenthood to promote abortion, even in countries where people find abortion objectionable. I learned something new about the Mexico City Policy from a letter written by Bishop Hubbard and Ken Hackett, the Mexico City Policy gives funding to the ā€˜U.N. Population Fund which supports a program of coerced abortion and involuntary sterilization in China:’

How many lives have been ended because of abortion being promoted through the Mexico City Policy? How many women have been involuntary sterilized?

That Jesus understood that the poor would always be with humanity until the end of time, and even He understood that there were circumstances where the needs of the poor could be overlooked.

The priests job is to give us guidance on how to live the Gospel.
Which after listening to a homily about the poor, is exactly a reason why I no longer attend the Catholic Church in what is the territorial parish for Catholics in my neighborhood. His guidance on how to live the Gospel didn’t square with what I read in the Gospel.

Don’t cooperate with evil to satisfy an earthly need. Following Christ and doing his will is more important than earthly needs.

I’m not sure of his point either. Perhaps that there will always be poor. 🤷 But that doesn’t mean society should not further strive to eleviate the numbers.

And of course your interpretation of the Gospel is 100% accurate. šŸ‘

It’s arrogance to suggest that the government can wipe out poverty and injustice. That has to be done at the individual level, seeing Christ in others. Being that we are fallen creatures, poverty and injustice will end when evil has been conquered at the end of the world.

There is a tremendous spiritual poverty in our world. That needs to be addressed as well. The vehement responses by our bishops against the HHS mandate has already begun the new catechesis so sorely needed in this world.

Romney - he has the best chance of beating Obama. I also believe he could turn around our economy. On the other issue - supreme court justices, foreign policy, etc. I believe he is solid.

Ishii
This is how I feel as well.

You aren’t obligated to attend only your ā€œterritorial parish.ā€ My son, e.g., can’t stand the music(?) and the homilies at our parish and attends elsewhere. I endure and just offer it up. 😃
