I’ve been called a misogynist due to being pro-life and I am a woman.

Oh I think that history is full of terror from \men who were very far from ideal. And there is very little from men who approached ideal deportment.

And here one needs to define ideal deportment.

I might not make the grade.

All fall short of the ideal deportment. But the phrase I used was ā€œapproached ideal deportmentā€.

If you’re the southern gentleman I suspect you to be, I’m sure your deportment is pretty okay.

So, limn the outlines of the approach. Won’t know if we are making progress without some approximations and road signs.

The one who knows best has given a sufficient stamp of approval. For over 50 years.

So I meet some sort of standard.

Well, you know me and the printed word.

My road signs are well embedded, as (as I suggested) my 50 year certificate of approval suggests.

Particularly considering he wasn’t exactly a flower child in his political views and this was no secret when he was alive. I think the gist of the interview is him rejecting the ā€˜new Hollywood’ generation of filmmakers - Scorcese, Peter Fonda et al - as well as or because of their politics, so in that context it makes sense he would be saying some racially backward things, at least on an emotional level.

I remember finding him genuinely frightening in ā€˜Red River’ opposite Montgomery Clift.

Even when I was a kid his movies weren’t exactly popular but we all knew who he was because everyone imitated his drawly speech ā€˜well hellloo pilgrim …’

Hard to pick. Short stories, of course: the Mother Hive, They, Baa-Baa Black Sheep, The Village That Voted the Earth was Flat, The Gardner, and more. The poetry, especially. The Islanders, The Power of the Dog, The Last of the Light Brigade, all the others you might be thinking of. My child and I memorized Gods of the Copy Book Headings, and recited it to each other in quatrains. Long stuff: STALKY & CO, THE LIGHT THAT FAILED, PUCK OF POOK’S HILL. Very early on, THE JUNGLE BOOK, especially Her Majesty’s Servants.

And a lot more. My Kipling collection is centered on the Mandalay edition of the collected works, and a couple of other series same, plus odds and ends. Plus a selection of bios and critical studies.

Almost all are packed away (a common phrase) because I needed the shelf space for more Tudor England stuff, but some things are still to hand.

Well there seems to be a market these days for finding ancient ā€œdirtā€ on people to discredit their current opinions or stance on unrelated topics or just because they can. For example, back in December some lowlife journalist searched through Oklahoma QB Kyler Murray’s twitter looking for dirt and published some tweets he made as a 12-14yr old using gay slurs with his friends. Or the people who trolled through Kevin Hart’s twitter to find some 10yr old jokes about not wanting his son to be gay just because he was chosen to host the Oscars and I guess he wasn’t ā€œpureā€ enough. Why anyone spent time to write an article criticizing a deceased man for a 50yr interview we can only imagine, but I’d hazard a guess that they wanted to tie current conservative Americans to racism today by trying to paint a conservative icon like John Wayne as a persona non grata. To say if you like John wayne you are a racist. Some people just take pleasure in trying to destroy others I think.
