Oxford will 'decolonise' degrees including math and science

No. Science and math are not political. Two plus two really does equal four. Always has, always does, and always will.

Politicians use science for political purposes, often without understanding what science is and without the limitations that science always recognizes that it might be wrong.

I guess some of the most abstract mathematics is harder to directly relate to politics, but obviously things like biology and even chemistry and other less abstract science will have political conclusions. I don’t think that’s a controversial or extreme statement.

They will have political consequences, not necessarily conclusions. Difference.

I don’t really see the distinction. I think that’s just trying to distinguish it from politics through semantics.

For instance to say “the hip bone is connected to the leg bone” is a conclusion. It would have a consequence if the scientist or someone else reasoned “the hip bone is connected to the leg bone, therefore we must raise taxes.” I’m oversimplifying of course lol.

Science has always been politicised,
Eugenics comes to mind.

Back in the day, all the hip, cool people believed in eugenics. There’s were books and articles written on how to find a healthy spouse, what to look for, what traits to weed out.

Then Nazi Germany took it to its extreme, and eugenics fell out of favor.

Eugenics comes to mind.
Eugenics, evolution, heliocentric theory vs geocentric theory, age of the earth/ solar system/universe, creation egg/big bang, existence of dinosaurs…there have been ideological conflicts with all of these. Some of these ideological conflicts have been considered political.

I have a copy of the “Science” book “Of Pandas and Peole” for which there was a court case or two.

Am I missing something? I don’t see that any informational content is being lost.
Some possibilities rumoured to be used for “diversifying” the STEM field:
  • rename theories because some scientists were not good people
  • make “sensitivity” courses compulsory at the expense of other courses or adding to already busy and loaded coursework
  • a financial scam that drives up tuition to hire people with PhDs in basketweaving and intersectionality studies and stick them into the administration of departments where they spend time finding things to complain about
People don’t know what will happen because the people whining don’t know what they want. They just like to bully and get attention. If the people running universities would just grow a backbone and just tell the crazies to go away instead of bowing to them and virtue signalling, life for people would be so much less annoying.

Then this discussion is driven more by imagination than knowledge (?).
This discussion is driven by the madness from the people who run these fine institutions. They waste their time appeasing ill-educated mobs with incoherent demands and then trapping themselves in completely avoidable messes in the process rather than doing things that actually help their students. These mobs need attention to exist. Starve them of that and they’ll go away.

This includes steps such as integrating race and gender questions into topics, embedding teaching on colonialism and empire into courses
i am not sure how you would do that in physics. For example, how would you integrate race and gender into Newton’s laws of motion. If you throw a rock up in the air with a certain initial velocity, and you want to calculate when it will hit the ground, i doubt that race or gender would have much to do with the answer? Similarly, if you toss a pair of dice, what is the probability that the sum will be 7? How would race or gender be integrated into that?

We don’t know what they’ll do to “decolonize”. It makes no sense. And whatever Oxford plans on doing, now that the vice chancellor trapped them in, it won’t be enough. That’s the mob’s answer to everything. “That’s not enough”. “More needs to be done”. The mob makes complaints and/or demands that are vague (“decolonise”) and/or contradictory using silly or misapplied terms to make themselves sound smart (in their minds, the rest of us can see through their scam). That traps “woke” leaders who virtue signal and appease them. When they attempt to guess what the mob wants and present a “solution”, the mob gets offended and/or claim it isn’t enough.
It’s a big dangerous scam.

Might turn out to be a jobs program for people with degrees in subjects that add no value to society

You probably should be careful here… I imagine a person with a PhD in Sociology reading your post and thinking “what a racist…they should lose their job.” (“And so should their spouse”)

Oh well, there are other things to do besides research in physics. There is always working at Sambo’s restaurant.

I’m actually a sociology graduate currently working at Oxford University as a Political Correctness Commissar. It’s why I’m on this forum.
