What is the point of ‘alternate pronouns’?

Some folks feel more comfortable with neutral pronouns. This can be for a variety of reasons.

Maybe they’re just starting to transition and don’t feel they “pass” well enough to use the pronoun they are working towards, but find their old pronoun uncomfortable.

Maybe they feel they are outside the gender binary and don’t quite fit as male or female. Maybe they just prefer the neutrality of other terms much like some women prefer “ms” over miss or mrs.

I work with teens.
LGBT teens are seen as cool and hip and edgy by other teens.
I used to believe that they were all scared of being outed and being treated mean.
But I haven’t seen it.
It’s very cool for a straight kid to have an LGBT friend.
I don’t know if it’s because they’re enjoying the second-hand drama or what…
But I’m not going to attest to something I haven’t seen.

Of course I can elaborate…
When middle schoolers are giving each other dating tips for same sex dating…
When kids are quick to tell you they’re not a homophobe “I have lots of genderqueer friends!” (Again, these are young teens)
When kids are bragging about how cool the kids at their school are “we even have lesbians dating” (7th graders)

I used to believe the stories about the bullied LGBT kids. The first couple times I saw things like I described I thought maybe I misunderstood what I was seeing, because surely the LGBT activists would never have lied or anything.
But I’m afraid I simply haven’t seen the type of bullying that the activists have assured me happens all the time

Nobody really knows what causes homosexuality. There are theories all over the place. I will say that it seems to manifest differently at different times and places.
So I reserve judgement until we know more.
I don’t rule out that there might be imitative behavior.

Sounds like they have been taught the importance of tolerance and acceptance and they are proud that it is being practiced. I don’t know that it is a bad thing. Kids in middle school brag about anything if they have listeners. Is it really any different than a kid of the same age bragging that they got to “third base” with their heterosexual boyfriend or girlfriend? It is kind of par for the course when you spend a lot of time around middle schoolers.

Our teacher used to tell parents: I will believe half of what the kids say happens at home, if you will do the same when they are telling you what happens at school. They aren’t exactly the most honest demographic at that age.
