so they are mutilating a child with a disability because she’s imperfect and does not understand why she bleeds every month and when to take a shower…oh yes [sarcasm] that makes perfect sense![/sarcasm] Sounds like what the nazis would have done! Except they would have gone further and just euthanized the young girl instead.

Eugenics is like cockroaches: you can never stamp them all out.

The article reads like a classic case of using a hard luck sob story to justify immorality.

it’s the same as using the “Rape scenario” and the “Life at risk scenario” to justify unlimited abortion on demand.
Similar arguments are in use here in the UK by those pressing for Euthanisia:

“Oh but look at this poor unfortunate who’s forced continued existance is an affront to basic human dignity… let us give him a lethal injection for his own good…”
then next thing we know there’s massive pressure on anyone over a certain age to admit to being a burden on thier families and go in front of a “Death Comittee” for “Permission” to be euthanised.

After taking the time to read this story I cannot judge the parents decision. This was not a random decision . Their daughter was unable to understand the monthly bleeding and would actually cut herself which is a symptom of great distress. My heart goes out to these parents and I pray for them to have peace.

But there should be a law where each case is looked at on its own merit.

I think it’s wrong…but if she doesn’t understand, and after four years, not being able to make her understand. What do you do? The parents probably felt like they had no choice, and honestly, it probably is better for their daughter not to have to deal with it.

If this sort of thing is permitted by the church in case of medical necessity, and her lack of hygiene was causing medical problems, then doesn’t this fall under the permissible umbrella? It wasn’t being done to prevent pregnancy (it sounds like she is with her mother a great majority of the time anyways).I think this is reasonable, as there really was no other option.

On another note, I really don’t know why the parents felt the need to make this public. This seems like a family matter that ought to be kept private, not publicized.

Exactly. Did everyone else actually read the article?

Use of the word sterilization is unfair. She had a hysterectomy which was done for legitimate medical purposes. This happens all the time when children or elderly adults cannot understand their medical conditions. Does a 2 year old consent for tubes being placed in her ears?
Precisely…caretakers make decisions like this all the time for those with mental disabilities. As mentioned, I do not understand why they choose to make this difficult decision public.

There is no moral reason that a woman with those kind of disabilities should ever enter into motherhood. It would be cruel to her, and to her children.
She does not have the ability to make that decision, so the only way that that would happen would be if someone imposed it upon her.
Now nobody will be able to do that to her either.

This is true. The law would protect people with retardation that want to marry and have children. They should not have that right taken away from them by sterilization .

Exactly. Having worked in the mental health fie;d, I have come to believe that we have pushed things like this too far. Someone with profound mental deficiencies is not capable of effective parenting. Sterilization is an effective way of ensuring that the issues never arises.

I disagree wholeheartedly. People who are incapable of parenting, should not have children. A person who is profoundly mentally deficient is not capable of caring for themselves in most cases, let alone children.

In years long past, there was a case to be made for borderline people, who may not have been too great with a math book, but could swing a pick axe or a shovel as good as anyone.
Laws were then designed to correct that injustice of forced sterilization against a group of people who were in fact capable of being self-sufficient.

To assume that the girl described in the article is in any way like that is not even close to the truth. Motherhood would not bestow dignity upon any of the parties involved, but would in fact be an extreme form of abuse.

Because some people are “slow” does not mean that they cannot parent. Look around and tell me how many great parents do you see ? Many “smart” parents cannot raise good children, because of their lack of parenting skills.

Again, she was not “sterilized” to prevent pregnancy. She had a hysterectomy for medical indications. She was cutting herself every month to make her period stop at the least. I think the did a wonderful thing for her to improve her quality of life.

There are many severely mentally and physically disabled people who could never possibly consent to intercourse. They could never understand the concept of a romantic relationship or marriage. The only way they could become pregnant is by rape.

This is not the sort of person we are talking about: a fully functioning adult who is able to hold down a job but is “slow”.

I don’t see any controversy whatsoever with this situation.

This isn’t “slow” as in “stupid” or “smart” this is she can’t handle it! If she can’t handle her period without cutting herself after four years…what makes you think she can handle pregnancy? If she can’t take care of herself or keep herself clean, how is she going to be able to take care of another human being and keep it clean?

You’ll notice I used the term profoundly. These women are profoundly mentally deficient and the actions taken by their parents are perfectly appropriate in my opinion.
In the other cases…if a person is unable to earn a living, balance a checkbook, pay bills, etc., they should not be reproducing IMO because they can’t possibly teach skills that they cannot master themselves. To me it is only common sense.
