Mother Jones is not a reliable source - it’s a radical left wing outfit that produces sophist statistics to help people think banning guns is smart. It’s not. Between lies, damned lies, and statistics, these are completely the most abhorrent of all, “statistics.”
^^^^This.

I agree with the Bishops. Complete elimination would be ideal. Even if it’s not possible we should work towards it because the less guns, the less deaths by guns.

The human mind + a gun is more dangerous. Even if you are a good guy with a gun, accidents happen. If you own a gun you are more likely to be shot.

motherjones.com/politics/2013/01/pro-gun-myths-fact-check

From the same article, here is a chart that shows that the more gun owners in a state the more people die by guns.

No disrespect intended, but I believe that anyone who believes than banning guns - even in theory - will solve the problem doesn’t understand the problem.

You can’t dismiss the article simply because it’s in Mother Jones. You need to show that the studies are wrong. Here are the sources for the bit that I posted.

"Conclusion: Among adults who died in California in 1998, those dying from violence were more likely than those dying from non-injury causes to have purchased a handgun. "

aje.oxfordjournals.org/content/160/10/929.full
“The findings of this study add to the body of research showing an association between guns in the home and risk of a violent death. Those persons with guns in the home were at significantly greater risk than those without guns in the home of dying from a suicide in the home relative to other causes of death. This finding was particularly the case for males, who in general have higher rates of completed suicide than females do.”

“Firearms in the home appear to be a risk factor for unintentional gunshot fatality among adults. The magnitude of the observed effect estimates should be compared with those from additional studies.”

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/9715182/
“CONCLUSIONS: Guns kept in homes are more likely to be involved in a fatal or nonfatal accidental shooting, criminal assault, or suicide attempt than to be used to injure or kill in self-defense.”

ajph.aphapublications.org/doi/abs/10.2105/AJPH.90.4.588
“CONCLUSIONS: Many children live in homes with firearms that are stored in an accessible manner. Efforts to prevent children’s access to firearms are needed.”

pediatrics.aappublications.org/content/107/6/1247.abstract?sid=96fc3066-8fc5-4c58-b518-1940841c762b&sso=1&sso_redirect_count=1&nfstatus=401&nftoken=00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000&nfstatusdescription=ERROR%3a+No+local+token
“Conclusion. Many 8- to 12-year-old boys will handle a handgun if they find one. Guns that are kept in homes should be stored in a manner that renders them inaccessible to children.guns, weapons, firearms, children, childhood behavior, injury prevention.”

It’s been exhaustively discussed in this thread, and in millions of other threads all over the internet. Just because people with gunaphobia hop on a thread, admit to having not read the thread, and then post willfully deceptive statistics doesn’t mean we all now have work to do - all over again.

And yes, you can dismiss Mother Jones. It’s not just wrong, it’s willfully, deceptively wrong. It’s designed with an end in mind and then pulls tries to manipulate statistics to leave the reader with an impression that’s entirely different from reality.

I’ll take that graph seriously when I see a similar graph of ownership rates vs. deaths for chainsaws, cars, nailguns, etc that show no correlation.

100 percent of people that have breathed air die.
Perhaps we should outlaw breathing as well.

There. Is certainly a stronger correlation of breathing with death.

See.
Statistics can easily be manipulated.

100% Of people who drink water die!!!
There is a joke petition floating around the Internet about the need to ban a chemical called Dihydrogen Monoxide. The chemical is colorless, odorless, tasteless, and is known to cause thousands of deaths per year, It is often used as an industrial solvent and is highly corrosive to metals, it contributes to the Greenhouse Effect, and can be found in cancerous tumors. It is used in industrial farming and its runoff ultimately flows into the oceans.

Gullible people are quick to sign this petition until they are told that Dihydrogen Monoxide is the chemical name for water.

LOL

If people are so willing to let others do the thinking for them, what hope is there to avoiding socialism.

It’s fine to bring forth studies that confirm your own beliefs, but it’s silly to bring forth academic journals when you clearly just hunt for the conclusion and not vet the study itself (Which you haven’t since at least two studies need to be purchased). Tsk tsk.

And the studies showing a gun related death increases when a gun is present in the home, whether a cause of suicide or any physical altercation, is obviously a biased towards gun control.

Nice try, Peterson, but maybe next time.
