I think it’s been suggested that God, in His perfection, tailors messages to best convey truth to His people, just as a human father might portray certain truths differently to a 5 year old child than to a teenager or adult child. The message doesn’t change, but the manner of sharing it might. When God’s children were a bunch of nomads, He may have spoken to them in sorts of parables, so that they might better understand the underlying truth, namely, that He had created everything and that He had created humans in His image. The MANNER of creation was not what was important, just that it was created. That is why the fact the the sky isn’t a clear dome holding back water doesn’t undermine the Bible’s authority. You doubt the power of God. Again why is it so hard to believe that God couldn’t relay his exact message in a Book written by men, if he can create the Heavens. Is he not the Alpha and the Omega. He placed every single word in the bible exactly where he wanted it to go.
This isn’t to say that one might not believe in a literal account, but to explain why not doing so is not wrong.
The Pope agrees that believing in evolution, with God’s guidance (especially for humans) and the direct, special creation of the soul, is not wrong. Anyone who says that it is wrong (you are free to think it is incorrect, but it is not wrong) is disagreeing with the Pope.
