Perhaps you should read some Scripture about envy
Why should I be envious of millionaires? Actually, they are to be pitied, if it was not for the fact they are our lawmakers, who are responsible to ensure that justice and mercy are carried out in this nation.

I have the true riches of our Lord Jesus Christ.

What about yourself?

I think itshows more patriotism when an American politician puts his money in an American savings account. Money in America helps Americans. Money overseas helps foreigners.
Joe I previously asked the question do you purchase only American made goods? If not why not? You would be helping Americans. Why is Mitt Romney held to an impossible standard but you give yourself a pass?

Jesus makes it very clear for us. Those who store up treasures on earth are serving mammon. When half of our elected officials are millionaires, one can make assumptions that they are not serving God. Even the religious Pharisees of the days of Jesus Christ were accused of such:

No servant can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.” The Pharisees, who were lovers of money, heard all these things, and they ridiculed him. And he said to them, “You are those who justify yourselves before men, but God knows your hearts. For what is exalted among men is an abomination in the sight of God.

(Luke 16:13-15).
So, all people who earn a high income are serving Mammon? What is the cut-off in your judgement? The top 1%? Are they all going to Hell for serving Mammon because of the income they make?

Please see my answer in post 304. Briefly, to repeat what I said there, it is because the Republicans, starting with Nixon and Kissinger, have made it impossible to find certain goods made in the USA.

I agree, but…

…perhaps the poster should read up on pride, as well?

The question was to prove that Romney has accounts overseas. Do you agree that this has been shown conclusively to be true?
Talk about obfuscation. There was never any argument that Romney had overseas accounts. He must provide extensive disclosure as a candidate and the accounts were disclosed. It’s laughable to say he was “hiding” them…it was very obvious that not only Romney but many Democrats in Congress also have overseas bank accounts. Obama’s most trusted advisor Valerie Jarrett has oversas bank accounts.

And your point would be?

I am not sure how literally we should take this. There are many wealthy people who are good Catholics and good Christians in other ecclesial communities who are wealthy.
Yes, there are a certain number of such, but with great difficulty according to Jesus.

Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.” (Matt.19:24).

On that we would agree. We all have wealthy individuals in our Parishes and in our Archdocese who are incredibly charitable. If not for these wealthy individuals our Catholic schools would close, our retired Priests and Religious would not have decent housing and medical care, our food pantries would be empty, our services to the poor would be curtailed.

The wealthy, particularly the wealthy religious provide the vast majority of support for charitable organizations. It’s the love of money and placing money as a false god that is the problem, not simply having money. I don’t understand why the kneejerk conclusion that the wealthy are inherently evil.

Then why did we see the following:
Joe not sure if the reference was with respect to the specific location for the funds. He apparently owns a company that was chartered in the Caymens. I think it was noted he had money in Swiss bank accounts.

The issue with both was not the location but the inference there was something sneaky and underhanded if not downright illegal about these accounts.

Quite honestly lots of people have accounts in other countries for a variety of reasons. One of our retired docs is Indian. He has accounts in England and India because he helps his family members who live in those countries. He funds them with after tax dollars and he pays taxes on the earnings. There is no reason to believe that Mitt Romney did otherwise.

So, to be clear, if an Aryan cult beileves in killing Jews or Satanists want to sacrifice virgins, you would oppose a government’s interferance into their actions because there shouldn’t be any religious restrictions, correct?
Strawman alert, Bob! I said religious restrictions, not CULT restrictions, whether Satanic, Aryan, or other.

I agree, but…

…perhaps the poster should read up on pride, as well?
To say that I am not envious of millionaires is pride? To say that I have the true riches of Jesus Christ is pride?

I have the true riches of Jesus Christ undeservedly so, spiritual riches I did not earn. I have been redeemed by the precious blood of our Lord Jesus Christ who poured out his life on account of my sins. I have been redeemed from my tresspasses and sins by Jesus Christ who suffered immeasurably on account of my sins. Even now, without him, I can do nothing, and I am nothing.

I know what pride is, it lurks behind every word we speak, every thought we think and every action we commit. I would never say that I did not have pride, for as the book of Wisdom says, “Pride is the beginning of sin”, and God knows that I am a sinner.

His mercy endures forever.

Indeed, but you pity the millionaires because you know you are better off than they are. That would be pride.

BTW…you didn’t answer my other question. What is the cut-off regarding worship of mammon? Top 1%? Six-figure income? More money than you make? Just curious. If you are going to judge someone’s soul, you really should have a cut-off.

And who decides what is a cult and what is a religion?
Especially interesting with respect to Romney as Mormonism was called a cult on this thread or on the previous Paul Ryan thread. Oh and ask a JW about Catholics! WHOOWEE! You’ll find we are members of a cult who worships the Whore of Babylon…

As you said, there is sometimes a fine line and a matter of interpretation.

Actually, in comparison to the third world, I am wealthy. (Eventhough I have this 10 year old laptop that was given to me, a junker of a vehicle, and am living from paycheck to paycheck with no retirement).

In fact, I sometimes think that to be a true disciple of Jesus Christ while living in this country is almost impossible. We have so much that we take for granted. When I think about this, I can not assume that I am materially poor in God’s eyes.

The cut-off is in the SERVING of mammon. Everyone knows in their own hearts how much of their time and energy is taken in acquiring possessions and in the keeping of them.

If one’s priority of time and energy is in the serving of mammon, then we are not serving God. I would probably fail.

It is just that we have so lowered the bar regarding this whole subject of serving mammon, that almost anything is now justified. So much so, that we regard other sins, like sins of the flesh as the standard bearer of unrighteousness to the exclusion of the unholiness of serving mammon…just like the religious trap the Pharisees fell into.

God knows our hearts, and how we have failed Him.

And you know that Romney serves mammon how exactly? Do you have a window into his soul? How can you be certain that its not a matter of a splinter in Romney’s eye you’re judging, but you have a beam in yours?
