"On December 20, Benedict XVI will declare former Pope Paul VI venerable. Cardinals belonging to the Congregation for the Causes of Saints approved on December 10 a report on the heroic virtues of Paul VI.

The former Pope had a very important role in the Second Vatican Council. The acceptance of his heroic virtues falls exactly 50 years since the start of the Second Vatican Council. "

Thanks be to God. It is wonderful to learn of another Pope beginning the process toward blessedness and/or canonization. I truly pray this will stop the negative press that he has received from a minority who found fault with his ministry.

Another great Pope is Leo XIII. I wonder if he will ever be canonized.

I too am surprised that he has not been canonized. I wonder why?

He helped with ecumenism (especially in the Eastern Catholic Rites), Mariology (the Immaculate Conception). He also revolutionized contemporary social teachings (Rerum Novarum), which still affects and profounds Catholics and non-Catholics to this day.

If I may be so bold, I believe the Church has been very blessed in this passed century and a half to have such holy and wonderful shepherds lead their flocks.

Not to mention Humanae Vitae. I’m happy to hear it.

Well we just got to keep praying for Pope Leo XIII! I like him also . . .

I am glad for this news about Pope Paul VI.

We have had a series of very good Holy Fathers.
  • Thank you Lord for such blessings! Amen +

That is so awesome! Pope Paul VI was a great Pope even though I never knew him since he was before my time. I have always loved that he was the author of Humanae Vitae, the encyclical condemning contraception.

Pope Paul VI is finally getting the credit he deserves. Humanae Vitae, quitecontroversial at the time & still is for so many, has proven to be prophetic as our society continues to slide into the tank…

That was damage control after he had allowed the use of conscience in deciding the size of families. See Populorum Progressio, especially part 37.
Although I can see how liberal/progressive thinkers would indeed highjack that paragraph, Paul VI clearly meant that families’ use of conscience did not include the use of artificial contraceptives: the government must be"in conformity with the dictates of the moral law…their own conscience [must be] informed by God’s law authentically interpreted."

In context of Catholic moral teaching, the approval of artificial contraceptives clearly are not the correct interpretation of God’s law.

What does that even mean, “conscience in deciding the size of families?” Example?

How else would one interpret it? Remember also that a group of theologians were assembled by the Pope and majority voted in favor of ABC. Remember also that Paul VI had earlier relaxed the Friday abstinence rule. (in case people look for patterns in rulings)
  1. There is no denying that the accelerated rate of population growth brings many added difficulties to the problems of development where the size of the population grows more rapidly than the quantity of available resources to such a degree that things seem to have reached an impasse. In such circumstances people are inclined to apply drastic remedies to reduce the birth rate.
There is no doubt that public authorities can intervene in this matter, within the bounds of their competence. They can instruct citizens on this subject and adopt appropriate measures, so long as these are in conformity with the dictates of the moral law and the rightful freedom of married couples is preserved completely intact. When the inalienable right of marriage and of procreation is taken away, so is human dignity.
Finally, it is for parents to take a thorough look at the matter and decide upon the number of their children. This is an obligation they take upon themselves, before their children already born, and before the community to which they belong—following the dictates of their own consciences informed by God’s law authentically interpreted, and bolstered by their trust in Him. Not quite. Populorum Progressio came out in 1967 and Humanae Vitae a year later and only after a group of moral theologians voted in favor of artificial birth control, which had been introduced in the late 50’s.

One more thing. The birth control pill had earlier been approved by Pius XII, albeit for a different purpose.

Give us a break. That’s like trying to blame Jesus for Judas. He didn’t cave to the groupthink did he…to his credit.

Pardon me. I should have said to Our Lord’s credit. “Without me, you can do nothing.”

Fr Z had an interesting take on this.
It was interesting. Heroic virtue is the question. It’s beyond my competence to judge that. Humanae Vitae is certainly part of the picture. It isn’t the whole picture. God let’s his will become known in the causes of saints. I agree that some bad things happened on his watch. Bad things happen on every pope’s watch. Judas happened on Jesus’ watch. The evil in the world happens on the Trinity’s watch. Have you read THE JESUITS The Society of Jesus and the Betrayal of the Roman Catholic Church. By Malachi Martin? I read it years ago. He was a Jesuit scholar and vatican insider. He details how enemies within the order were undermining Paul VI (JPII also). St Ignatius founded the order to provide intellectual support to the papacy. And we all know Humanae Vitae was pretty much rejected by most of the laity. This is also part of the picture. Is that the pope’s fault? How does an individual deal with betrayal? That is the cross. It’s also God’s turf to judge. For some reason this parable of Jesus came to mind…the parable of Lazarus and the rich man from Luke 16:19-31. The rich man who is burning in “Hades” tries to get Abraham to send Lazurus who is “with Abraham” to the rich man’s family members who are still alive to warn them. The response was a big negative…“If they do not listen to Moses and the prophets, neither will they be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.”
