Manila, Philippines, Jan 16, 2015 / 04:07 am (CNA/EWTN News).- Pope Francis took the opportunity during an address to families in the Philippines to praise Blessed Pope Paul VI’s encyclical opposing contraception and affirming Church teaching on sexuality and human life.
The Pope spoke Friday to families gathered at the Mall of Asia Arena in Manila during his Jan. 15-19 visit to the Philippines.
After discussing various threats to the family, including “a lack of openness to life,” he deviated briefly from his prepared remarks, transitioning from English to his native Spanish in order to speak from the heart about the subject.

Here is the story from Yahoo News with the headline “Pope Strongly Defends Church Teaching Against Contraception”

Good for Yahoo.now let us see if all the major news channels follow suit.
More importantly,Good for the Holy Father for speaking out…
Humanae Vitae is an encyclical that every Catholic should read,go into the world with the knowledge to defend God’s natural law.

I’m shocked!!!

I can’t believe that Pope Francis said this and it wasn’t on CNN and all over Facebook…

Wow.

Pope Paul VI reiterated very well what was always Church teaching.

He correctly went against the opinions of most of the people in the “exploratory committee” who thought contraception was a matter of conscience.

During the time it was being explored, many, many people though Church doctrine would change and jumped the gun.

When Humanae Vitae was released, many priests rebelled against it.

It’s unfortunate he did not allow the Bishops to crack down on the dissent more. If so, we might have Catholics who actually follow it. As it is, the percentage of Catholics using contraceptives isn’t that different than the population as a whole.

Here is the full text of Pope Francis’ remarks on the family straight from the Vatican News site:

Also, Whispersintheloggia gives some helpful background info on recent goings-on in the Phillipines that were likely on Francis’ mind when he gave the address:

As far as I can tell from the transcript or the article linked by OP or yahoo’s article, the Pope did not mention contraception at all in his remarks!

Can anyone quote exactly what he said about contraception if anything?

Lack of openness to life…

“I think of Blessed Paul VI,” he said. “In a moment of that challenge of the growth of populations, he had the strength to defend openness to life.”
In 1968, Pope Paul VI released the encyclical Humanae Vitae, which upheld Catholic teaching on sexuality and the** immorality of artificial contraception, predicting the negative consequences that would result from a cultural acceptance of birth control**.

You are correct. He didn’t mention contraception (nor same sex marriage) explicitly.

Why speak in riddles? If he wanted to say something about contraception wouldn’t he use the word? As far as I can tell he was praising Pope Paul VI for his compassion and strength, not the doctrine itself.
Because Pope Francis seems to like to emphasize the positive aspects of Catholic teaching (e.g. being for openness to life) rather than the negative ones (e.g. being against contraception). A lot more goes into being open to life than simply being against contraception (though it does necessarily include that).

What riddle? Openness to life? That’s pretty clear.

Do you think the Holy Father supports artificial contraception?

This quote:

Is a really obvious reference to Humanae Vitae. It’s really not a riddle.

The Phillipines have been very attacked and pressured to cave into contraception use. This is very important that the Pope clarified the teachings and pointed out what was previously stated and that this prediction has really come true.
With that said, I would not expect much coverage of this mostly because of the pressure from so many parts of the world for this country to cave in and use contraception. It would fly in the face of what they are trying to force them to do. We must pray for the Philipines that they stay strong and stay on track.

It is however unclear enough that secular sources may not pick up on it.

There are a lot of things that secular sources don’t pick up on, most have their own agenda and will twist things however they like to get their agenda across.
