CNSNews.com) – House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif) on Thursday described America’s Roman Catholic bishops as “lobbyists in Washington, D.C.” in their efforts to persuade the Department of Health and Human Service to rescind a proposed regulation under the new health-care law that would force Catholics to act against the teachings of their church by compelling them to purchase health-care plans that cover sterilizations and all-FDA approved contraceptives, including abortifacients.
The proposed regulation, scheduled to take effect on Aug. 1, 2012, would require every health-insurance plan in the United States to cover sterilizations and all FDA-approved contraceptives (which include abortifacients) without charging any co-pay. The Catholic Church teaches that sterilization, artificial contraception and abortion are morally wrong and that Catholics cannot be involved in them.
Noting that she is “a devout Catholic,” Pelosi said she sometimes disagrees with the Catholic bishops when they act as “lobbyists

Christian charity prohibits me from saying what I feel about Rep Nancy Pelosi. 😃

Jim

I think that we are observing the long-term neurological side effects of exposure to higher dosages of botulinum TOXIN.

If she calls them this in public, wonder what she calls them in private?

I don’t understand why Ms. Pelosi would consider the Catholic Bishops lobbyists on this issue when it was the Obama Administration itself which called for public (name removed by moderator)ut and advice. Why are the bishops now lobbyists when they offer their (name removed by moderator)ut and reveal the anti Catholic nature of the impending legislation? Perhaps Ms. Pelosi should communicate with her own Party a little more closely.

I am a devout American, but I disagree with Nancy Pelosi when she acts as a “Catholic”

The U.S. bishops (USCCB) and other Catholic organizations are not only lobbyists, but also very active and effective lobbyists, seeking to influence legislation on the federal and state level.

You may hate Nancy Pelosi, but the fact remains that Pelosi is correct that the U.S. bishops lobby for legislation that conforms to pro-life and other moral positions espoused by Catholics.

Yep. And, that’s what she opposes as a “devout Catholic.”

But, consider for a moment, the impliedly (if not explicit) pejorative nature of her comment, and the condescending tone by which she thus marginalizes them.

By your own definition, are you not also a lobbyist? I’ll bet you have called or written a letter to a representative. Did you just say “Hi!” or did you mention some political point?

I know under the law the Catholic Church is not required to disclose how much money they spend to influence legislation. The first link Alan55 provided said Pew reported 26 million dollars but this was disputed by a Church spokesperson. Saying only the cost of the efforts by the Bishop Conference’s government relations staff reaches no where near 26 million.

According to the link, a Catholic Relief Services director said his particular organization spends $800,000. Far less than Pew reported.

But I’d be curious to know what the Bishop’s Conference spends in their activities and which politcal party their efforts are most directed towards.

Pew’s Alan Cooperman was quoted saying “the best way to handle it is just transparency.” I have to agree.

They are, in part, lobbyists. I don’t see what is wrong with that. However, since Princess Pelosi used the term as an invective, I can see where the resentment comes from.

If we are true to our Catholic (or Orthodox, Christian) faith, we should all be lobbyists!

I think the Bishops should state and teach the position of the CC against the evils of the Church and not be beggers before governments.

I understand the lobby part but i dont believe that God wants His people to be the laugh of the town.

I’m sorry, I didn’t know one had to be a lobbyist IOT protect freedom of religion and one’s right to life. I was under the impression one had to be a moral individual and, in the the case of Americans, a good citizen to do that.

Someone on another site suggested Jesus was a lobbyist for his fathers firm.

When I think of Rep. Pelosi, the word “Pharisee” comes to mind.

I hope she accepts God’s grace before it’s too late.
