Pelosi Says Her Catholic Faith ‘Compels’ Her To Support Gay Marriage

It’s not as if she’s going to repent tomorrow and take everything back. That would be a great miracle.
You know this exactly how? Don’t you believe in miracles? No one with the exception of God Himself knows another’s heart and certainly none of us here on earth know when another might repent.

Her bishop obviously does not think that her pronouncements are a cause for scandal.

I may disagree but so what.
Not quite sure what you’re talking about, he’s publicly called her on her pronouncements on several occasions, and he’s invited her to discuss these grave issues personally.

What’s going to be different if she’s excommunicated beyond being told she is not to receive the Eucharist nor take on a parish role of any kind until reconciled? She’s still going to be a Catholic by virtue of her Baptism.
Because it will be officially recognized that what she believes publically is outside of the teaching of the Church.

You’ll have to excommunicate me, also, along with a lot of other Catholics who feel the same way. Charity demands civil union, IMO.
I know. That’s what I don’t get. There’s always a push to excommunicate famously known people. But others as you say might hold the exact same views, feel the same way as she does, not keep their views to themselves, and they still receive.

The answer is in Scott’s post above. As far the fact that “others might hold the exact same views and receive,” that would be because the “others” are not publically vocal and bringing scandal to the Church.

As far as the “others” go: If we are in a state of mortal sin, and heresy espoused by someone who has full knowledge and free will would certainly qualify, then we aren’t to present ourselves to Communion.

If Nancy Pelosi is denied Communion, but someone with a less known face but with her same political views is not, how does that preserve the Sacrament?
Pelosi is a public figure, and has taken legal steps to preserve abortion, etc. She does not just “think” abortion is moral and just, she acts on those beliefs in complete public contradiction to formal Church teachings.

This isn’t an either-or deal here.

CMatt is right that Pelosi’s spiritual status isn’t up to us to meddle with.

Aaaaaaaand…

Dymphna is also right that the Church should make clear that her message is contrary to Church teaching so people aren’t mislead.

People in this thread keep arguing with the presumption that you can’t do one without the other, which is completely false.

It’s because they cause PUBLIC scandal. They are not keeping these views to themselves, but are PROMOTING their anti Catholic views, and still calling themselves “Catholic”. These people in the public eye cause the most damage.

Nancy Pelosi is either pushing just her own agenda in trying to pursuade and influence Church teaching or she is very confused and misguided. Somehow her Bishop needs to figure out how to silence her.

If you feel this way, then why remain in the Catholic Church?
I am not encouraging you to leave the Church, but why stay somewhere that teaches something that you seem to so adamantly disagree with? There are plenty of communities that embrace gay mairrage and clergy. What the Catholic Church needs is unity in the Body of Christ. There is room for difference in opinion, but one of the things that makes us Catholic is submission to the Magisterium of the Church. So get with the program.
Why does the Church continue to call her Catholic? I think Baptism is another thing that makes one Catholic at least according to the Church.

Nothing in the law or proposed law changes in any way the Sacrament of marriage in the Catholic Church. Non-sacramental unions historically called “marriage,” have existed in civil law, a contract between the state and two people. Some people want to define that contract as only being valid between opposite genders. I don’t. The Church is the Church. Everyone else in the society is not required to believe what we believe.
:clapping: Wow there are a lot of posts for me to get caught up on and to respond to here. I also liked what you said about being responsible for our consciences in another one. God bless you and peace.

If you want people to take you seriously, try behaving in an adult manner. “Bite me” is a childish and uncharitable phrase. Some could consider it a personal attack. Plus, it pretty much makes you sound like a child, and detracts from any message you may wish to convey.

I believe that it is against forum rules to question the professed faith of anyone. Including posters who have differing opinions or even Nancy Pelosi. It is especially uncharitable to infer that anyone should leave the Church. You are not perfect, I am not perfect, no Catholic is perfect. We all have issues.

While many of us may not agree with Pelosi or Biden, we still have the responsibility to treat everyone with charity and respect. The Church demands that of us. Lets try our best to keep these discussions on a respectful level.
Thank you for this. In another post I read Pelosi is a “sick, socialist biggot” who “would argue with the Good Lord himself” and “a menace to all”.

I’m a registered Democrat, but I have to say that every time Mrs. Pelosi opens her mouth I cringe. Statements like this are just plain dumb, IMHO. Supporting gay marriage is one thing, but to cite a faith that fervently opposes it as your inspiration is…I’m at a loss for words. Have the guts to say that you support something despite what your particular faith may teach.

All it does is breed controversy and supply ammunition for those who will nay-say anything supported by a Democrat.

I know they are not to present themselves but don’t you think some probably do? Especially if they are without as recognizable a face as someone in the public arena. If non famous people speak on matters to others in agreement with Pelosi as has even been done on this private but publicly viewed internet forum from time to time, then won’t the Church have to excommunicated all of them too? I think it was the point Julia was making back there.

Because I don’t understand why some here even on CAF appear to me to be hung up on who can ID a Catholic.
We’ve covered this what seems to be a thousand times. When people say things like “So-and-so isn’t a Catholic”, what they mean is “So-and-so isn’t a faithful Catholic.” This unspoken term is understood to be there.

I always speak that term. Even if you speak down to people, it’s asking a lot to ask them to understand.

Me too. Makes you wonder about the sanity of the people in her district. If she’s the best they have to offer, the rest must be stark raving lunatics.

Harvard, you’re scaring the wits out of me. The second time I’ve noticed in 2 days that you said I was right on something. 😃

Of course. What’s your point? Is the Minister of Holy Communion supposed to read their mind?

If someone is publically vocal and brings scandal to the Church, then I have no problem with the Church excommunicating them. I’m not sure where the confusion is.
