I saw these two in Vegas years ago. They brought a little kid up on stage and were using foul language while he was up there. I never watched them again. Classless people.
I’ve only ever seen them in clips here and there on different network shows. So I guess I’ve only ever seen the toned down version. I had no idea they were so vulgar. I always thought they were kind of amusing, but I’m starting to think I was grossly under-informed.

It is clear to me that “Tram is the Way” has his own agenda. He stated:The body of research on the effectiveness of latex condoms in preventing sexual transmission of HIV is both comprehensive and

conclusive. The ability of latex condoms to prevent transmission of HIV has been scientifically established in “real-life” studies of sexually active couples

as well as in laboratory studies…
He then gave a CDC web site below:Source: cdc.gov/condomeffectiveness/latex.htm

Below is a verbatim statement from the above
Consistent and correct use of male latex condoms can reduce (though not eliminate) the risk of STD transmission. To achieve the maximum protective effect, condoms must be used both consistently and correctly. Inconsistent use can lead to STD acquisition because transmission can occur with a single act of intercourse with an infected partner. Similarly, if condoms are not used correctly, the protective effect may be diminished even when they are used consistently. The most reliable ways to avoid transmission of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), including human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), are to abstain from sexual activity or to be in a long-term mutually monogamous relationship with an uninfected partner. However, many infected persons may be unaware of their infections because STDs are often asymptomatic or unrecognized.

It is genuinely very difficult to ascertain accurately the sexual practices and habits in any large population for many good reasons. What we have, is no shortage of people pushing their own agendas. We clearly have, in many respects, a disordered and broken culture. The Church advocates an honest and genuine search for truth, and genuine love of all of our brothers and sisters. Contrarily, the advocation of moral relativism (itself a philosophical fallacy) may well be mostly a facade for a narrow and selfish pleasure-seeking agenda.
Only to the extent that we are genuinely seeking the ultimate good will we go forward towards civilization.

It didn’t surprise me that Penn and Teller were willing to slander and libel the Church. It only surprised me that they are still performing. I hadn’t heard anything about them in a while, and I know I couldn’t pick them out in a crowd. 🤷
Again, they’re jealous because their audience is destined to get bored and wander away. Meanwhile, Christianity is eternal, because Christ is eternal.

Part of the reason Catholics have gone so far away from the Church is because too many of us, myself as well, for a time, believed the wrong people. We are not discerning enough. And getting rid of your TV is a very good idea.

We can read the Bible and Catechism daily, but if we spend the rest of our time in front of the box meditating on trash, our hearts and minds will often follow. No, nothing drastic but enough to affect our views in the wrong direction.

On the other hand, when things like this occur, it is of some value to see for yourself how anti-God and pagan the media has become.

Peace,
Ed
Also, the main reason for leaving the CC is their not being grounded in the faith. Too many are pick and choose “Cafeteria” Catholics who really don’t know what they truly believe, and the TV doesn’t help matters either. In fact with some of these idiotic programs, they make matters worse. Again, this shows that Satan is alive and well.
Let’s all pray for these deluded persons that Jesus have mercy on them. God Bless.

PAX DOMINI :signofcross:

Shalom Aleichem.

I find it hard to believe that you can’t see the problem with this statement. If he was listening to the Pope, he might not be HIV-positive* and he certainly wouldn’t be raping his wife. If the rapist avoids using a condom, it’s not because he’s such a faithful Catholic.

Good grief.
Excellent posts, Jen. One thing I find consistent about athiests is, they all fail to see the fundamental ignorance inherent in their remarks. And they’re the smartest people in the world!! Just ask them.

Epidemiologic studies that are conducted in real-life settings, where one partner is infected with HIV and the other partner is not, demonstrate that the consistent use of latex condoms provides a high degree of protection.

Planned Parenthood is a billion dollar abortion mill. They get a couple of hundred million from the federal government every year. Their lobbiests in Washington pass out much of that money like candy on Halloween. They can get anyone in Washington to say whatever they want them to say. And they do.

Remember, the odds of getting pregnant or getting an STD using a condom (15%) is approximately the same as killing yourself with one pull of a six shooter playing russian roullete (16.7%). Would you feel safe playing Russian roullette? Then why would you feel safe using a condom?

The portmanteau, sheeple, has been used to disparage people foolishly acting like sheep following misguided leaders. How apt a description of our modern culture that is so very much disordered and broken. Comedy is perverted to ridicule the best that we have. The message of narrow selfish pursuit of pleasure is the mantle of the modern “leaders” who are more deeply lost than the sheep that they have led astray. Moral relativism is the pathetic pseudo-philosophy that is the foundation for this tragic force.
But we are made in the image and likeness of God. Yes, a major leap, to faith, that assures us that even our worst enemies are to be loved and respected as children of God. It does not take brilliance to recognize that the leaders of the modern culture and their sheeple are also suffering. When you see the perversion of a heart, you are witnessing the diminishment of humanity. Stumbling in the darkness and flailing in dirt only blocks the openness of light. Look at the real consequences of this modern culture: disrespect, deception, broken marriages, addiction, truly broken human beings. There are constant attempts to pervert the meaning and understanding of common-sense reality. Yes, it is astounding and pathetic that anyone who claims to be seeking a better world would attempt to justify the barbarity of murdering innocents. How in the name of God, could anyone, enveloped and straight-jacketed in evil, be fully human. All of the pleasure-seeking in the world, all of the attempts to redefine what is true morality, can never destroy a profoundly guilty conscience. Addiction, so very far from enhancing life, eats away at our very purpose, to be fully human. Rather than providing genuine solace, the sheeple will only provide greater loss.

Our only salvation are those ancient virtues whereby we are truly elevated beyond our narrow selves. We must always pursue a genuine and an honest education clearly with our intellect and more profoundly with our heart and we will not be deceived. If we are sincere about finding the Truth and the Life we will surely find the Way.
We must not shy away from the difficult arguments and issues but both our intellect and our heart must me in the right place to ever reach the best answers.

I wasted a half-hour watching the show, a half-hour I’ll never get back. (I would have rather watched the Sopranos-y cliffhanger season-finale of “Weed” again.)

I’m putting this in caps to get people’s attention, not because I’m yelling: WHERE ARE ALL THE POINT-BY-POINT REBUTTALS??? I CAN’T FIND ANY–!! THEY CITED ABOUT THREE ENCYCLICALS, INCLUDING ONE THAT REQUIRED BISHOPS TO ‘COVER-UP’ THE ABUSE OF CHILDREN, AND NOBODY WANTS TO TALK ABOUT THAT. WHY NOT??

Rather than waste more of this thread on tit-for-tat about Catholic teaching on prophylactics - because, gosh, that certainly hasn’t been talked about ad nauseum, can anybody who WATCHED the show provide some rebuttals?

A perfectly good thread to defend the Catholic faith (give an answer for…isn’t that apologetics is supposed to be?), and it’s going to waste arguing over some mickey-mouse stuff that’s already been discussed before, long before Penn & Teller were even born. I just don’t get it. Talk about a ‘mis-labeled’ thread…

Rebuttals? Anyone? Bueller…Bueller??

A point by point rebuttal would require us to dignify their show by watching it.

So that means you didn’t even watch it before critisizing it? If we’re to defend the Catholic faith from atacks we’re at least supposed to understand their arguments, otherwise it’s completely pointless.

For my part I watched a little on Youtube. I could stomach only about three minutes or so.
I don’t need to spend an hour in a sewer to know it smells bad.

Most of what passes for comedy these days is ugly, un-funny vulgarity. And as I am sure all of you are aware, the Catholic Church is one institution that it is still OK to attack. Now I enjoy a good Catholic joke as much as anyone: in fact a priest told me this:

Two housekeepers were cleaning up the rectory after the priests had had a wee bit too much the night before.

“Oh, Mrs. Murphy,” said Mrs. Ryan. “There certainly are a lot of dead soldiers out here this morning.”

“Yes indeed, Mrs. Ryan,” said Mrs. Murphy. “But isn’t it consoling to know that there was a priest with each one of them right till the very end?”

But a lot of so-called humor is bitter and mean-spirited and sometimes you can’t get the joke because of all the profanity a lot of comics feel obliged to throw in. Where’s Bob Hope when you need him? Peace.

I’m probably at least as old as you are and have never bought into organized religion. My politics tend to lean more conservative than liberal except in areas of personal choice. However I will admit that my perspective on Christianity in general has been biased by having to listen to the garbage that the young earth creationist in this part of the country spew forth each and every day.

As far as Catholicism goes I have fundamental differences of opinion with the church’s position on abortion, birth control, AIDS prevention and the general historical accuracy of the Bible. As far as I am concerned anyone who can’t even consider wearing a condom while raping their unwilling wife even though they know they are HIV positive just because an 80 year old virgin tells them it is a sin is sheeple.
“Bought into.” Thanks for calibrating.

Hahaha Good analogy! Although as many people will now be spewing the nonesense that Penn and Teller have put on their show it would be nice to have specific answers for them. For example, I have not read the document on solicitation that they brought up, and so I have no answer for anyone who comes up to me and says the same things that Penn and Teller have. Has anyone read this?

I did watch it… as far as the “ENCYCLICALS” telling Bishops to cover things up, the only quote the show actually supplied was mid-sentence with ellipses on either side with no context as to what the rest of the sentence or surrounded sentences said. It was in relation to details not being discussed for ten years until after the victim had reached adulthood. I don’t know the specifics of it, and can’t really look it up because I am at work, but even some U.S state laws and schools have somewhat similar rules, if I am not mistaken. Perhaps someone with more knowledge can chime in. By the way, I will NEVER defend the pedophile priests that brutalized children, nor will I defend the people that covered up for them. However, just because a group of people did evil things, it does not mean it is open season to misconstrue the truth and tell lies about the Church. The Church was warned that there will always be wolves among the sheep. Even Jesus had Judas in his inner circle…so we are never immune to evil, even inside the Church. Judas’ roam the church corridors to this day. Penn and Teller seem to think that the Church proclaims to not have any sinners and that is just the opposite. We are full of sinners…Popes and priests included - but the Church is protected from the “gates of hell” and will never cease to be the Church.

So we go from two has-been magicians to condoms. Marvelous.

One of them has a single red-painted fingernail. Might want to look up its meaning.

One last word (hopefully the final one), as these two don’t need any more publicity on this site than they deserve.
Penn and Teller are 911 Truthers.
Their credibility is shot at with just that fact alone.
