Meaning that if one continues to hate God…one cannot yet “repent”. Contrition is about repentance…even imperfect.

If you mean can one hate God and still fear hell…sure. But imperfect contrition out of fear of hell is more than just fear of hell…there is a turning away from the sin (if one still hates in ones will…one is not turning away from the sin…)

It is a subtle difference to know hatred for God and non-repentance.

I would say rather that there can be a rather* non-subtle* difference between a person who hates God -and someone who runs away from God to make other things his god (disordered pleasure, greed etc).

There are those who fear hell. They fear hell so they ask for forgiveness.

Yes. But if they still hate God - they are not repenting…even in confession. They must turn their will way from “Hating God”. Repent and turn to God.

Grace is there for them - God will not force them but seeks them…

There maybe who are afraid of hell but are unrepentant of the sins in the sense of no sorrow.

If they are unrepentant - they are unrepentant.

I am not talking about emotion. As noted before emotion is not required.

But yes one must repent. Turn away from their mortal sins and back to God…
